I am due in Feb with a boy and spend a lot of time agonizing over a name. I just don’t [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] anything enough
At one point BD and I agreed on [name_m]Jacob[/name_m] but it bugs me how popular it is. I want something traditional but also special.
My background is Bulgarian and we live in [name_f]Canada[/name_f], so I also want it sound OK in both languages, and overall be a universally acceptable name, in case DS decides to live elsewhere.
Recently BD suggested [name_m]Maxim[/name_m], and it’s a pretty popular name for Eastern Europe, so it makes sense. My mom also loves the name.
I am not 100% but I do like it. The big problem is the magazine with the same name :-?
is the association too strong?? I definitely prefer [name_m]Maxim[/name_m] (sp) vs [name_m]Maksim[/name_m], so I’d keep it with an X.
I’m not from [name_f]Canada[/name_f] so I have never heard of a magazine relating to [name_m]Maxim[/name_m]. I consider it a more classy name and relate it to [name_m]Maximus[/name_m] and [name_m]Maximillian[/name_m] often given to royalty/rulers. I myself would prefer [name_m]Maximus[/name_m] or just [name_u]Max[/name_u].
[name_m]Maxim[/name_m] sounds like a fine name to me, max is a fun nn and people don’t use it as much as they used to… [name_m]Maxim[/name_m] as a magazine… Sorry I live under a rock… But max as a safe nn and heritage that protects the origins of the name , giving it sort of a right for him to carry it… Likely will protect him from any taunting if that’s your concern…, however if the connection is there for you that’s the concern.
Honestly I didnt think of the magazine until you pointed it. I find [name_m]Maxim[/name_m] very handsome and I also the [name_m]Maximus[/name_m] variation. It also has the sweet nickname of [name_u]Max[/name_u] to go. I say if you love it use it! In the end there are worst association than a magazine.
I wouldn’t give up on the lovely name of [name_m]Maxim[/name_m] because of some Magazine (if it is a men’s magazine). It’s a name that you love and that perfectly reflects your heritage and as you said, has the added bonus of also fitting right into the current naming trends. And who doesn’t love the adorable nickname of [name_u]Max[/name_u]?
If the spelling is troubling you, go for [name_m]Maksim[/name_m], it doesn’t prevent your from calling your baby [name_u]Max[/name_u].
I think [name_m]Maxim[/name_m] is a fine name, and I don’t think the magazine is an issue. Magazine sales are plummeting anyway. It could well be defunct within 5-10 years.
Bulgarian names are so bizzare and sound too Eastern euro. [name_m]Ivan[/name_m], [name_m]Nikolai[/name_m], [name_m]Boris[/name_m], etc… And a few boring-ish ones that work well in both languages like [name_m]Alexander[/name_m], [name_m]Phillip[/name_m], [name_m]Peter[/name_m]. I want something unique (not even sure why [name_m]Jacob[/name_m] became such a contender lol)
Boy names are so hard!!! I had a million girl names!
Thank you all for comments!! I think I love the name regardless of the magazine, so it’s a top choice but I am still actively looking!
[name_m]Maxim[/name_m] for those who didnt know (yay some people dont know!) is a men’s magazine that is pretty popular all over the world, and usually feautrues semi-naked chicks on the cover. My son might even be happy to share a name with it one day
