I’ve loved the name [name_f]Maya[/name_f] since my very first name-list in the 4th grade. I love the sound of it, and I love it’s simplicity.
BUT, I’ve recently discovered the spelling [name_f]Maia[/name_f]. Still pronounced My-ah but I really like how it looks written out, and I love the connection to mythology (I’m a mythology nerd). But, I’m afraid it might be mispronounced or mistaken as a yewneek spelling of [name_f]Maya[/name_f], rather than a mythological and fairly well-used name.
So: which spelling do you prefer? Would it be mispronounced? Would people think I’m trying to be yewneek?
I would pronounce [name_f]Maia[/name_f] like [name_f]Kaia[/name_f], but I’m sure [name_f]Maya[/name_f] would be the easier pronunciation choice. I dont think [name_f]Mai[/name_f] looks too unique. If anyone has had a [name_f]Mai[/name_f] [name_u]Tai[/name_u] they should be able to figure it out. [name_m]Both[/name_m] are equally pretty [name_f]IMO[/name_f]
[name_f]Maya[/name_f] = like the Mayans, NOT [name_f]MAY[/name_f]-a
[name_f]Mai[/name_f]-a/[name_f]Gaia[/name_f]
if you pronounce [name_f]Maia[/name_f] like i do, then everyone will think [name_f]Maya[/name_f] and spell it as such so you’d be correcting people and having to tell them you spell it different due to liking mythology
id think most people would think and say [name_f]Maya[/name_f] as the Mayan people, not as [name_f]MAY[/name_f]-a
I pronounce them the same. Mah-Ya. I prefer the [name_f]Maia[/name_f] spelling, though they are both pretty. What I DISLIKE is spelling it [name_f]Mia[/name_f] and expecting THAT to be pronounced the same way. I always assume [name_f]Mia[/name_f] should be pronounced like Mee-Ya.
I think if someone told me their name was Mah-Ya and I had to guess how to spell it I would guess it was spelled [name_f]Maia[/name_f]… but maybe that’s just due to the french influence here in [name_f]Canada[/name_f] or something?
I had never heard of the name [name_f]Maya[/name_f]/[name_f]Maia[/name_f] until recently teaching at a school and this beautiful little girl was named [name_f]Maya[/name_f]. Her name was spelt [name_f]Maya[/name_f] so I pronounced it as [name_f]May[/name_f]-a, but she told me it was pronounced as MY-A. I prefer the pronunciation of My-a. It’s prettier. [name_u]Ever[/name_u] since discovering this name, I love it. Its on my list now. I like the way [name_f]Maia[/name_f] looks though. You would pronounce [name_u]Kai[/name_u] as [name_m]KY[/name_m] so I think [name_f]Maia[/name_f] would be pronounced correctly most of the time. So I’m probably going to go with [name_f]Maia[/name_f] from now on.
In my family everything is pronounced phonetically so [name_f]Maya[/name_f] is [name_f]May[/name_f]-UH and [name_f]Maia[/name_f] is a bit difficult for me because my brain says it the same; but I know its different, if that makes sense! I prefer [name_f]Maya[/name_f], mainly because its close to [name_f]Mira[/name_f] which I quite like. I think [name_f]Maia[/name_f] would be easier though
I pronounce both My-a
I prefer [name_f]Maya[/name_f] aesthetically.
Also, i don’t mind unique spellings once there aren’t more than one offender in a name.
Like y and ee in one name… no (eg [name_f]Mylee[/name_f])
I prefer [name_f]Maya[/name_f], there’s just something about the three consecutive vowels in [name_f]Maia[/name_f] that looks a bit off to me. I pronounce both as My-uh.
I knew 2 [name_f]Maya[/name_f]'s and 1 [name_f]Maia[/name_f] at camp this year. The 1st [name_f]Maya[/name_f] pronounced her name My-ah. The 2nd [name_f]Maya[/name_f] pronounced it as [name_f]May[/name_f]-a. [name_f]Maia[/name_f] pronounced her name My-ah. So really, there will be confusion no matter which way you spell it. Personally, I love the [name_f]Maia[/name_f] spelling because I think it’s super pretty, however [name_f]Maya[/name_f] is pretty too.
