We were told we are expecting a girl (hopefully our next ultrasound will confirm that because I still can’t believe it!). We both like the name [name_f]Mckenna[/name_f] but I do have reservations about it. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think it is too trendy? I especially like it because it is a surname in my ancestry. Also, do you like the spelling [name_f]McKenna[/name_f] or [name_f]Mackenna[/name_f]? I lean towards [name_f]McKenna[/name_f] but I think my husband leans towards [name_f]Mackenna[/name_f]…we live in Germany and since the name is very uncommon here [name_f]Mackenna[/name_f] would be more likely to be pronounced correctly. Any other name suggestions would be appreciated…my husband is very picky and we are having a hard time. He only like [name_f]Liliana[/name_f] (I like it but I feel the -ana ending is pretty trendy…I also don’t feel like it’s “the one”) and [name_f]Marina[/name_f] (not a huge fan).
Honestly I think it walks the line between trendy and out-dated, although because it’s a family name I think it would work well as a middle name. Names ending in “-ana” don’t automatically strike me as trendy, but all variations of [name_f]Lily[/name_f] are super popular, at least in the US. That said, [name_f]Liliana[/name_f] is nice. I don’t care for [name_f]Marina[/name_f], it just makes me think of sailboats. I do like [name_f]Mariana[/name_f], although it ends in “-ana”. What about [name_f]Miranda[/name_f], [name_f]Julia[/name_f], [name_f]Leila[/name_f] or [name_f]Lila[/name_f]?
My cousin has a little girl named [name_f]McKenna[/name_f], and while it’s cute, I do think it’s very trendy. If you really like it but think it’s too trendy, you could use it as a middle. (i.e. [name_f]Lily[/name_f] [name_f]McKenna[/name_f], [name_u]Piper[/name_u] [name_f]McKenna[/name_f], [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] [name_f]McKenna[/name_f])
The -ana ending is also very trendy. [name_f]Juliana[/name_f], [name_f]Luciana[/name_f], [name_f]Liliana[/name_f], [name_f]Mariana[/name_f]…
[name_f]Marina[/name_f] is the least trendy of his choices, and I do think it’s pretty and has a beautiful meaning, “from the sea.”

Thanks for the reply! I feel the same way about [name_f]Marina[/name_f]! [name_f]Mariana[/name_f] is ok but it is pronounced very similarly in [name_m]German[/name_m] to how marijuana is pronounced. I do like [name_f]Leila[/name_f] and [name_f]Lila[/name_f] but DH doesn’t I’m about at the point where I should just have him go online and find more names he likes because he seems to be more picky than me!
Thank you for the suggestions! Funny enough, our first daughter is named [name_f]Allegra[/name_f] so I think that’s a great choice! I also love love love [name_f]Audrey[/name_f] but he doesn’t like it. I will run the others by him though!
I am very fond of a sweet 9 year old named [name_f]McKenna[/name_f]… Her nicknames include [name_m]Mack[/name_m] and [name_m]Mack[/name_m] Attack and [name_f]Kenna[/name_f]. She is precious to me as I was her nanny for several years! I think because it is a family name the trendiness shouldn’t matter as much.
Thank you for your feedback!
I hate to reveal my family’s name to strangers on the internet, but…it would make my husband very sad if you named your daughter [name_f]McKenna[/name_f]. LOL! He really truly hates it when people use his surname as a first name, especially as a feminine name because the prefix Mc- means “son of”. After we got married, I told him that I feel like one of those girls with two first names now when I introduce myself to people. He didn’t like that comment at all. I’m a substitute teacher and I’ve had lots of students named [name_f]McKenna[/name_f]/[name_f]Mackenna[/name_f]/[name_f]Makenna[/name_f]/[name_f]Kenna[/name_f]/[name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u]/[name_u]Kenzie[/name_u]/etc., so I’m very accustomed to hearing it as a feminine first name. It is quite trendy, but if you love it and it means something to you, that shouldn’t matter. You’ll break my husband’s heart, though!
Teacher for 25 years, way too trendy.
I’m not a fan of [name_f]Makenna[/name_f] either. I think it’s time has passed and it will be as dated as [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f] and [name_f]Brittany[/name_f] in the future.
Sounds like you have some common ground. If I lived in a world where I’d never heard the name [name_f]McKenna[/name_f] and didn’t know it was a surname, Ma-KEH-na and Ma-[name_f]REE[/name_f]-na only have one syllable different. [name_f]Melina[/name_f], [name_f]Malia[/name_f], [name_f]Milena[/name_f], and [name_f]Marita[/name_f] are all in that neighborhood, but I’m sure there are more.
[name_m]Will[/name_m] she grow up in Germany or the US? Obviously the popularity concerns are very different if she won’t live in [name_u]North[/name_u] [name_u]America[/name_u]. And, will she attend [name_m]German[/name_m] schools where spelling or pronunciation may be an issue? Maybe you could ask some friends to pronounce both your and your husband’s preferred spellings to see which works better. You don’t have to answer here, just some food for thought.
