I think it’s unisex.
I think it could go for either. The possibility of the NN [name]Laney[/name]/[name]Lani[/name] makes me lean towards girl, but it could definitely go boy if you wanted it too.

I voted girl because I like the nn [name]Lani[/name] for it as well but it is definitely unisex and usable for both to me.

If it’s a family name, I say unisex. Otherwise I think it’s trying too hard.
I say boy. I do see the potential for [name]Lainey[/name] as a nn, but I grew up knowing two boys with the surname McLane, and they both went almost exclusively by McLane by their friends (I think that’s a bit weird, haha, since they’re brothers!), so it sounds masculine to me. I think he could go by [name]Mac[/name], [name]Lane[/name], or even [name]Max[/name] if he wanted…
“Mc” is patronymic; it means “[name]Son[/name] of.” For that reason, I’d say boy. However, with all the McNames being used on girls, I wouldn’t be surprised to meet a female McClain.

I have met a little girl with this name (though I can’t remember the spelling), so I associate it as a girls name.
I say neither…They should remain as surnames.

BOY. [name]How[/name] could you possibly consider a Mc name for a girl. Thats like giving a boy the name [name]Penelope[/name], or [name]Gwendolyne[/name]. It just sounds ridiculous.

Boy, because of the Olympic equestrian [name]Mclain[/name] [name]Ward[/name]. [name]Don[/name]'t care for the mcnames on girls as others have said.
That’s my cousin’s name. He’s a boy, so I think of it as a boy’s name.
