I was researching names for my mum to use for a lesson and was stuck with the name [name_f]Emily[/name_f]. In my book, it says [name_f]Emily[/name_f] means ‘energetic’ or ‘industrious’ but on the NB website it says it means ‘rival’. Can anyone give me an explanation for this?
According to behindthename (which i usually find to be the most accurate place for origins of names) it says that the name [name_f]Emily[/name_f] is the feminine form of Aemilius which is a roman surname derived from the latin word aemulus meaning “rival” so i’d assume that’s the accurate meaning. i’m not too sure about the meaning from your book though, sorry!
Thanks. I was just wondering because my book is a NB linked book and I found it weird that the same people would say two different things.
I think your book might derive it from [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] which means “work” (Germanic).
