[name_f]Megan[/name_f] is a very 80’s name but I don’t think it’s too dated to use. It’s one of those names that would feel fresh on a baby.
I picture a [name_f]Megan[/name_f] in her late teens or in her twenties it seems a bit time stamped to me. But that’s just my opinion. Maybe [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]? You could use back nick name meg, [name_f]Maggie[/name_f], [name_f]Maisie[/name_f]
I like [name_f]Megan[/name_f]. I also like the NN [name_f]Meg[/name_f]. People are using the name [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] and [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] right now and those names are wayyyyyyy dated but they’re popular because they’re pretty. [name_f]Megan[/name_f] fits in the category of dated but pretty to me. I say use it. I think she will be the only [name_f]Megan[/name_f] in school growing up and I find that awesome.
Personally, I don’t like [name_f]Megan[/name_f]. I do find it dated. I love:

After being on Nameberry for a few years now, I’m really over the term “dated.” [name_f]Megan[/name_f] is a great name, I think it could be a modern classic. People have been using this name forever. The 100 year rule, your sweet vintage classics, [name_f]Megan[/name_f] does fit the bill. Think of the book [name_m]Little[/name_m] Women, one of the characters is [name_f]Meg[/name_f]. As people have been saying, [name_f]Megan[/name_f] is a part of the [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] family. So–[name_f]Meg[/name_f], [name_f]May[/name_f], [name_f]Maisy[/name_f], [name_f]Meggy[/name_f]–all are nn possibilities for [name_f]Megan[/name_f].
I think that you phrased your question as “I don’t hate that name by any means…” says a lot. It makes me feel like you are trying to find an excuse to give to your husband on why not to use [name_f]Megan[/name_f]. “I don’t hate…” is not synonymous with love. (“that name” kind of underlines the whole thing, don’t you think?) I think you need to [name_f]LOVE[/name_f], [name_f]ADORE[/name_f] and [name_f]CHERISH[/name_f] a name you give to the most precious thing you will ever receive - your kid. I’d talk to your husband about needing to find a name you both adore. Find out why he likes [name_f]Megan[/name_f] so much and then search for names with similar attributes. (We will sooo totally help. [name_m]Trust[/name_m] me on that!)
PS: I actually do think [name_f]Megan[/name_f] is dated.
I was born in 2001 and I have about 5 Megans in my year so…
I, too, have a name that was popular about 20 years before I was born (I’m a [name_u]Lisa[/name_u] from the late-80s), and I actually love it! Several of my friends growing up had mothers named [name_u]Lisa[/name_u], and given its popularity in their youth, they didn’t use it on their own children. As a result, I never had to go through the same problem of needing an identifying middle or last initial as my more commonly named friends ([name_f]Sarah[/name_f], [name_f]Amanda[/name_f], [name_f]Jessica[/name_f], [name_u]Ashley[/name_u], etc.) did. I never thought my name was dated at all.
If you like [name_f]Megan[/name_f], then you two should use it! It’s a sweet name with a lovely meaning, and I don’t see anything wrong with using it now. If you can’t get over the “dated” feel of it, then I think the other Berries on this thread have given good suggestions while keeping in the same “family.”
The Mad Men character makes it feel a little less 80s/90s, but I did grow up with plenty nonetheless. I think it works in 2013.
Keep in mind that often dads aren’t exposed to or interested in girls names as much as the mom-to-be may be. Not to say that his love for [name_f]Megan[/name_f] isn’t real (and it is a really nice name). You might want to show him local birth announcements or take a stroll to a popular playground and listen for names. It would be nice to find a name you both feel strongly about even if it takes compromise on both your parts.
[name_m]How[/name_m] about Megara?.. it is spunky and similar enough to [name_f]Megan[/name_f].
I always liked the combo [name_f]Megan[/name_f] [name_u]Ariel[/name_u] and thought of using Megara as a nickname
Although the name is personally not my style, I think [name_f]Megan[/name_f] is still doable for a modern girl. As you and others have said, using a “dated” name has its pluses (familiar/recognizable yet likely to be the only one in her peer group) and minuses (can make you sound older than you are). Maybe use a more classic or currently-in middle name so she has other options?
megan is a very popular name actually, my daughter has a lot of megans in her school and is only young. and personally I think its a lovely name
