My brain “knows” I should have voted for the “unisex” option because [name_u]Meredith[/name_u] is still a boys name in [name_m]Wales[/name_m]. However, where I live it’s all-female and I know I should be ashamed of myself for voting this way. What I’m familiar with overruled my brain in this case. Many Berries attempt to address the double standard in baby naming (boys names on girls are cool but not the other way around). My sincere apologies to those who do so (ME). My brain had a terrible malfunction!
I feel the same as [name_u]Mischa[/name_u]. I’m ashamed that I voted for girl because I hate boys’ names on girls! It’s just that hearing it on girls 90% of the time has made me feel that it wouldn’t work for a boy anymore (apart from maybe in [name_m]Wales[/name_m])
Unisex by definition.
[name_u]Meredith[/name_u], on a girl, was a popular name where I grew-up. There were many of them. I know the name is unisex but because of my childhood and only knowing female Merediths has made it very feminine to me.
It will always be a girl’s name to me, regardless of a technicality of definition. Personally, I dislike girl’s names on boys just as much as I dislike boy’s names on girls. I am not big on many unisex names, I usually file them in one category or another.
Technically it’s unisex but I think any boy given that name in the United States at least would have a really hard time growing up…
[name_u]Meredith[/name_u] in [name_u]North[/name_u] American is girl’s to me. Maybe it’s different in [name_m]Britain[/name_m].
[name_u]Meredith[/name_u] [name_m]Wilson[/name_m] was a man who wrote The [name_f]Music[/name_f] [name_m]Man[/name_m], a musical. (With fabulous names, I adore [name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f] and [name_m]Winthrop[/name_m].) In For Better or Worse the comic strip [name_u]Michael[/name_u] grew up to have two kids [name_u]Meredith[/name_u] and [name_u]Robin[/name_u]. I wasn’t crazy about this sib-set since it’s hard to guess what genders they are,
but [name_u]Meredith[/name_u] was a girl (and [name_u]Robin[/name_u] was a boy!)!
In answer to your question I believe [name_u]Meredith[/name_u] should be a Ms. not Mrs. or Miss unless she choses otherwise.
@emilyva - I was going to make it Miss/Ms, and then for some reason I just put Mrs. Yeah, I prefer Miss.
Thanks everyone for your help.
Miss [name_u]Meredith[/name_u] it is!
