Merit Vs Meret

[name]Meret[/name] was on the blog today and I have it on my list as well. I like them both for different reasons and I can’t decide which one I like better. First, how different is the pronunciation to you? I pronounce Merit like [name]Mare[/name]-it, and [name]Meret[/name] like Muh-ret (kinda like barrette)

Merit: I like the virtue connection, I like the Mer- sound because it reminds me of the ocean, I like the Egyptian history, more straightforward pronunciation. It does sound a little blunt or harsh sometimes though.

[name]Meret[/name]: a little more “name-y,” also has the Egyptian history, love the multicultural feel it has. I do worry it will be mispronounced, and I feel like it doesn’t match as well with [name]Rowan[/name].

So what are your thoughts? Which one do you like more, and why?

** also I just thought of a kinda cute connection with Merit and my best friend’s newborn son [name]Sterling[/name]. [name]Sterling[/name] and Merit both make me think of good morals, a kind heart, good triumphing over evil, etc. [name]Kinda[/name] cool, right?

Merit. Merit was recorded as first doctor.

I’d say Merit as ‘MEH-rit’ and [name]Meret[/name] as ‘meh-RET’. I much prefer the sound of Merit.

merit. I like that version better

I didn’t realize they were pronounced differently. I like Merit.

Between the two, Merit. However, I find virtue names a little much to live under, so I overall prefer [name]Maret[/name] ([name]MARE[/name]-et). I went to school with a girl by that name, and she rocked it.

[name]Maret[/name]/[name]Marit[/name] is another option. They are Scandinavian forms of [name]Mary[/name]. It was the other name my mother was considering for me when I was born.

[name]Meret[/name] is a little confusing to me since I would think to say it mer-ray, though it is more visually appealing to me than Merit, so I’d pick it over Merit.

Merit. I like the meaning, and I don’t think you’d ever get the correct pronunciation for [name]Meret[/name].

I prefer Merit. I feel the pronunciation is much clearer and I love the virtue connotation. I feel the soft beginning of the name balances out the slightly harsher ending making the name flow well (I pronounce it [name]Mare[/name]-it like you do). [name]Both[/name] names are pretty but I feel Merit is more stand out and fits better with [name]Rowan[/name]!

I prefer Merit too.

I like the Egyptian link - to possibly the first recorded woman in science, and in fact was watching a documentary about Merit wife of Ramose a while ago and thinking ‘ooh, Merit, that’s actually a pretty name’.

Merit all the way!

When i first opened this thread, i was thinking [name]Meret[/name], but reading everyone’s reasons for loving Merit has converted me- i’m team Merit too!

I just assumed they were pronounced MEH-rit/ret. I think I prefer Merit with [name]Rowan[/name].

I prefer Merit, which I love. [name]Meret[/name] feels more confusing and remote. Merit, cause it’s a word name, is more familiar & down-to-earth feeling for me. I like that it’s rare, but doesn’t feel stuffy or strange. I say it like it rhymes with ferret. The name makes me think of Girl Scouts & has a 50’s vibe unlike most virtue names that feel wayyy older & Puritan to me.

Yeah, twas a documentary that put it on my list too  Hearing it and being thrilled that it was a real name with a solid history.

I think I like Merit best, coincidentally there is a city in BC called [name]Merritt[/name]

I would go with Merit. I think the other version will be misspelled and mispronounced.

I think intuitively I want to pronounce Merit “[name]MARE[/name]-it” and [name]Meret[/name] “muh-RET”, so I prefer Merit. You can always spell it [name]Marit[/name] (I like this) or [name]Merritt[/name] to avoid “merit badge” associations, which really aren’t that bad of an association to begin with.

I love it btw, especially with [name]Rowan[/name]!

Merit. I dislike [name]Meret[/name], sorry. It looked weird to my eyes.
