Metta

Hello Nameberries!

Through a strange set of circumstances, I recently got a family history lesson. I learned that my grandmother’s grandmother was a seamstress at the turn of last century, and went by the name [name]Metta[/name]. Whether that was her given name or the name she chose to go by, I don’t know.

Has anyone ever heard of the name [name]Metta[/name], and if so, do you have any information on it? It’s such an unusual name that now my interest is piqued!

Thanks everyone!

As far as I know, it’s a Norwegian name, pronounced Meht-ta but spelled [name]Mette[/name]. HRH the Crown [name]Princess[/name] of Norway is [name]Mette[/name]-[name]Marit[/name]. It’s a fairly common name in Norway.

Nameberry says that it’s a variation of [name]Margaret[/name] - I’ve never known a [name]Metta[/name], but I knew a [name]Meta[/name] who was of (I believe) Danish descent and who said her name was a form of [name]Margaret[/name] as well. The only [name]Metta[/name] I’ve ever heard of is [name]Metta[/name] World [name]Peace[/name], previously known as [name]Ron[/name] Artest. Haha.

Thank you! Norwegian, huh? Sadly, I don’t know that branch of my family tree at all, so I don’t know if they were Norwegian or if she was simply given a Norwegian name. I think I’ll have to find out more now!

Thanks again. I really appreciate it!

I’ve heard of [name]Mette[/name], which can be prn like [name]Metta[/name], depending on your accent. I like the name, both said like “Meet” and like “Met-ah”

When I saw [name]Metta[/name], my first thought was that it was a nn for the [name]Fiammetta[/name] (means “fire” or “flame”). Another possibility is [name]Metta[/name] is often used as the short form of [name]German[/name] [name]Margaretha[/name]. I wonder if you have any Italian or [name]German[/name] blood in your family tree?

Yes, [name]Mischa[/name], I have heard that [name]Metta[/name] is a short form of [name]Margaret[/name]. There area several Mettas in my family tree database. [name]One[/name] is Norwegian and the others are [name]German[/name].

Yes…My name is [name]Meta[/name]. I was named after an opera singer my mother heard on the radio before I was born. I looked her up and really enjoyed the information. I recently found an instructor at [name]Indiana[/name] University in Bloomington [name]Indiana[/name] named [name]Meta[/name] by typing in “women named [name]Meta[/name] in [name]Indiana[/name]”. [name]Meta[/name] is a nickname for [name]Margarette[/name] (many spellings) and I was first told that it meant “[name]Pearl[/name]”…but later also heard it meant “change, diversity, difference” and other similar terms. I have a name-sake who spells hers with 2 t’s. I pronounce it Mee-tah, but have had it mispronounced dozens of ways. I have heard/read that it is [name]German[/name], Dutch, Latin, and a Spanish man I met told me it meant “look”. So, I just don’t really know.Let me know if you hear anything different.Good luck in your search!

They are not pronounced the same. [name]Metta[/name] is pronounced MEHT-ah and [name]Mette[/name] is pronounced MEH-deh.
