[name_f]Mia[/name_f] - My husband loves the name [name_f]MIA[/name_f] and I personally don’t want to use it because it’s way too popular (in 2015, was #6 in US and #1 in Germany and parts of Europe!)
[name_f]Lola[/name_f] - I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] this name, but hubby hates it! I like that it’s not in the top #20 names, and is cute and is a bit “spunky” but some people say it reminds them of that “[name_f]Lola[/name_f] song” or a provocative dancer (yet this song was from the 70’s wasn’t it? Younger people won’t have the same association…)
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you hear many “[name_f]Lola[/name_f]'s” out there today? What are your thoughts? Can you suggest similar names (cute, cool, shorter, not popular , not trending or “on the rise” right now??
I am lukewarm about [name_f]Mia[/name_f]. It’s “cute”, but also cutesy, and a little unsubstantial, in my opinion.
I used to find [name_f]Lola[/name_f] meh, but it grew on me! I think it’s sweet, spunky and fan. And it does remind me of [name_f]Lola[/name_f] by The Kinks! I am one of these younger people but I happen to be a Kinks fan. I think it would be fun to sing to her. [name_f]Lola[/name_f], L-O-L-A [name_f]Lola[/name_f]!
Some more ideas:
[name_f]Zoe[/name_f]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]
[name_f]Maisie[/name_f]
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f]
[name_u]Rue[/name_u]
[name_u]Hadley[/name_u]
[name_f]Holly[/name_f]
[name_f]Polly[/name_f]
[name_f]Vera[/name_f]
[name_f]Sadie[/name_f]
[name_u]Wren[/name_u]
[name_f]Gwen[/name_f]
I really like [name_f]Lola[/name_f]! My high school teacher has a dd [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] ‘[name_f]Lola[/name_f]’. It’s they only [name_f]Lola[/name_f] I have heard.
I prefer [name_f]Maya[/name_f] to [name_f]Mia[/name_f]. I just think [name_f]Maya[/name_f] sounds so beautiful.
[name_f]Lola[/name_f] does remind me of a dancer. It’s cute and quirky. I think because of its quirkiness and association it may turn a lot of people of but I like it.
[name_f]Mia[/name_f] is a bit more common, not my favorite. I do like [name_f]Lola[/name_f], but have a hard time picturing it on an adult. It is a little too cutesy for me.
[name_f]Lola[/name_f] reminds me of an exotic dancer type of name, like [name_f]Cherry[/name_f] or [name_f]Candy[/name_f].
I do think [name_f]Mia[/name_f] is cute though I personally associate it with my friends chihuahua as she was named [name_f]Mia[/name_f].
I’m not a fan of [name_f]Lola[/name_f]. I don’t think it ages well and it does make me think of the song (I’m in my 20’s) and of the Looney Tunes character. [name_f]Mia[/name_f] is cute though not my favorite. I actually prefer it as a nickname. Maybe a compromise would be to find a more uncommon name where [name_f]Mia[/name_f] can be used as a nickname? Or maybe find a longer name that your husband likes that you can use [name_f]Lola[/name_f] as a nickname for? If that won’t work for you I suggest starting from scratch since it doesn’t seem like either of these names will make both of you happy.
My name is [name_f]Lois[/name_f] and my parents (and partner) calls me [name_f]Lola[/name_f]. My dad is a huge Kinks fan so the name works well. Professionally, I use my name - [name_f]Lois[/name_f] - whilst I allow close friends and family to call me [name_f]Lola[/name_f] as they prefer it.
Squidly made a good point about picking a name you can nickname it for. It gives the child options. I certainly prefer [name_f]Lola[/name_f] as a nickname and people always comment on how pretty it is.
Thanks for all of the perspectives! It seems [name_f]Lola[/name_f] is really a hit-or-miss for people. I still find it cute yet strong sounding. I’m afraid [name_f]Mia[/name_f] is a no-go for me, simply because it is in the Top #5 names of 2015 - too common/popular.
I really prefer, short & sweet modern names (older-sounding names like [name_m]Louis[/name_m], [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] and [name_f]Lilianne[/name_f] are not my style) And I find some of the names on this board too Trendy and “Trying to hard” ([name_f]Plum[/name_f], [name_u]Rue[/name_u], [name_f]Poppy[/name_f], [name_u]Hadley[/name_u], [name_u]Avery[/name_u] etc.)
Some other suggestions here I like:
[name_f]Ana[/name_f]ïs
[name_f]Sadie[/name_f] (although reminds me of my friends’ dogs name)
[name_f]Edie[/name_f]
[name_f]Zoe[/name_f]
[name_f]Cora[/name_f] (my hubby hates this though)
[name_f]Elsa[/name_f] (maybe too much like Frozen Disney movie character)
[name_f]Lila[/name_f] (not sure how to pronounce)
[name_u]Ruby[/name_u] (too many friends have daughters named [name_u]Ruby[/name_u])
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] (I consider this a “rising trendy” name that will be super popular in 2016. Already know 2 Lunas recently born!)
[name_f]Stella[/name_f] (not sure I love this or not)
I think [name_f]Mia[/name_f] is a cute name. I’m in [name_f]Canada[/name_f] and I would say it’s not popular here. [name_f]Lola[/name_f] has two songs written for her, Copacabana by [name_u]Barry[/name_u] Manilow where she’s a showgirl and [name_f]Lola[/name_f] by the kinks where she “walks like a woman but talks like a man”. That’s what I always think of when I hear that name.
I love [name_f]Lola[/name_f], it’s cute and spunky. Not a fan of [name_f]Mia[/name_f], it’s too popular for me.
From the suggestions you like I love [name_f]Edie[/name_f], [name_f]Zoe[/name_f] and [name_f]Lilah[/name_f] (pr.‘lie-lah’).
What about:
[name_f]Orla[/name_f]
[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]
[name_f]Tansy[/name_f]
[name_f]May[/name_f]/[name_f]Maeve[/name_f]
[name_f]Greta[/name_f]
[name_u]Ezri[/name_u]
[name_f]Freya[/name_f]
[name_f]Erin[/name_f]
[name_u]Connie[/name_u]
[name_f]Etta[/name_f]
[name_f]Nell[/name_f]/[name_f]Nella[/name_f]
[name_f]Zelda[/name_f]
[name_f]Faye[/name_f]
[name_f]Zadie[/name_f]
[name_f]Naomi[/name_f]
[name_f]Willa[/name_f]
[name_f]Miri[/name_f]/[name_f]Mira[/name_f]
[name_f]Margo[/name_f]
[name_f]Esme[/name_f]
[name_f]Zinnia[/name_f]
[name_f]Xenia[/name_f] (pr.‘zen-yah’)
[name_f]Effie[/name_f]
[name_f]Flora[/name_f]
[name_f]Thora[/name_f]
[name_f]Niamh[/name_f]/[name_f]Neve[/name_f]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f]
[name_f]Rose[/name_f]/[name_f]Rosa[/name_f]
[name_f]Enna[/name_f]
[name_f]Gaia[/name_f]
I love [name_f]Luna[/name_f] but I definitely agree about it becoming very trendy! [name_f]Edie[/name_f] could also be a cute nickname for [name_u]Eden[/name_u].
Here are a few more suggestions (and they’re all outside of the top 200 on the SSA):
[name_f]Tessa[/name_f]
[name_f]Nova[/name_f]
[name_f]Hope[/name_f]
[name_f]Olive[/name_f]
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u]
[name_f]Zara[/name_f]
[name_f]Freya[/name_f]
[name_f]Harlow[/name_f]/[name_u]Marlow/name_u
[name_f]Margo/name_f
I still also like [name_f]Edie[/name_f], [name_f]Zoe[/name_f], [name_f]Lila[/name_f], [name_f]Zadie[/name_f]…I think i really prefer [name_f]Lola[/name_f] over [name_f]Mia[/name_f]. [name_f]Mia[/name_f] is very commonplace in the US and in the Top 5 in Europe now. Yes, [name_f]Lola[/name_f] has the songs (The Kinks, who I love anyway) and the showgirl song…but these songs are older and not really relevant with young people today.
These others scream “celebrity [name_u]Baby[/name_u] names” to me or too popular:
[name_f]Olive[/name_f] - [name_u]Drew[/name_u] Barrymore
[name_f]Harlow[/name_f] - [name_f]Nicole[/name_f] [name_m]Richie[/name_m]
[name_u]Marlow[/name_u] (or was it [name_u]Monroe[/name_u]?)
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] (on the rise/too trendy)
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] (too trendy) - Some celebrity just named her baby [name_f]Luna[/name_f]??
[name_f]Rose[/name_f] (too common, esp for middle name)
[name_f]Hope[/name_f] (I really don’t care for these [name_f]Faith[/name_f]/[name_f]Hope[/name_f]/[name_f]Grace[/name_f]/[name_f]Prudence[/name_f] type names)
[name_f]Zara[/name_f] (reminds me of the big clothing chain)
There are others that I might prefer as a middle name ([name_f]Nova[/name_f], [name_f]Freya[/name_f], [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f], etc)
Keep ‘em coming! Short, original, spunky names that are not on the Top 50 or trending lists now!
I don’t like [name_f]Mia[/name_f] but yes, it is very high on the popularity lists which seems to bother you so perhaps that won’t work.
I love [name_f]Lola[/name_f]. If you hubby hates it that probably makes it unusable too I would think. I think people feel a bit awkward about it because of the [name_f]Lolita[/name_f] association. But heck I love [name_f]Lolita[/name_f] too
