Middle name and spelling for Sunniva

NOTE: I saw that there is already a thread about middle names for [name_f]Sunniva[/name_f], but since our criteria are quite different from the previous poster’s I hope it’s alright that I’ve created a new thread.

[name_f]My[/name_f] husband and I have chosen [name_f]Sunniva[/name_f] (pronounced SOON-uh-vuh) as our baby girl’s first name. We love the sound of it, the nickname potential ([name_u]Sunny[/name_u], [name_f]Neve[/name_f], [name_f]Eve[/name_f]/[name_f]Eva[/name_f]…), the meaning (“gift of the sun” - perfect for our midsummer baby!), and the origin (my family is Norwegian, and in fact [name_f]Sunniva[/name_f] is the patron saint of the region we come from).

So we’re looking for input on two subjects…

1. Spelling
There are many alternative spellings for [name_f]Sunniva[/name_f]. From what I can tell the most common spelling in Norway is Synnøve, but we definitely want to avoid anything that would make pronunciation confusing for people where we live (in [name_f]France[/name_f]). We’re hesitating between [name_f]Sunniva[/name_f] and Sunneva. It seems [name_f]Sunniva[/name_f] is the more common spelling, but we think [name_u]French[/name_u] speakers might be more likely to pronounce it correctly on the first try with the Sunneva spelling. Which one do you prefer?

2. Middle name
We have quite a few constraints for our middle name choice and we’re having a hard time finding one that we like that meets all our criteria.

  • We want something that isn’t too long, since [name_f]Sunniva[/name_f]/Sunneva will have a four-syllable, difficult-to-pronounce last name. Ideally it would be one or two syllables.
  • We would love for it to be [name_u]French[/name_u]. Since her first name will be honoring my (Norwegian) side of the family, we’d like her middle name to honor my husband’s ([name_u]French[/name_u]) side.
  • We like names that make reference to nature, but that isn’t an absolute requirement.
  • And obviously it needs to sound nice with her first name. Unfortunately a lot of the short [name_u]French[/name_u] names we like tend to end in an “A” sound or contain an “OO” sound, which sounds a little rhyme-y with [name_f]Sunniva[/name_f] - but maybe this isn’t as much of an issue as I think! Name lovers, what’s your opinion?

Here are ones we’re currently considering:

[name_f]Lys[/name_f] (pronounced (LEESS) - We love the sound of this one, and I really like the way it looks, too (three letters, y as the only vowel). We’re hesitating because [name_f]Lys[/name_f] means “lily” in [name_u]French[/name_u], and it’s not a flower I particularly like! Also, my husband worries that it “makes us seem like royalists” (the fleur de lys is the symbol of the [name_u]French[/name_u] monarchy).

[name_f]Lilas[/name_f] (pronounced LEE-lah) - Means “lilac” in [name_u]French[/name_u]. I love this one, but it has the rhyming issue with [name_f]Sunniva[/name_f]. We have the same issue with Léa, another name we love.

[name_f]Lune[/name_f] (pronounced LOON) - We just thought of this one last night and we really like it. It means “moon” in [name_u]French[/name_u]. But the “OON” sound is present in both [name_f]Sunniva[/name_f] and [name_f]Lune[/name_f] = rhyming issue again.

[name_u]Lou[/name_u] - a pretty common girl’s name in [name_f]France[/name_f]. It’s cute, but something about “[name_f]Sunniva[/name_f] [name_u]Lou[/name_u]” sounds like a Dr. Seuss character to me.

[name_f]Mai[/name_f] (pronounced MAY) / [name_f]Rose[/name_f] - I group these together because I think they’re both just fine. They would be fallback options for us, but ideally we would like something a little more out of the ordinary.

We’re very open to suggestions and advice!

I typically prefer [name_f]Sunniva[/name_f], but when I put it through a translator, Sunneva was stated more toward the pronunciation you want. In this case, I’m leaning more toward Sunneva. As for MN, I love [name_f]Lys[/name_f] with [name_f]Lune[/name_f] as my second favorite. I can’t speak to [name_f]Lys[/name_f] making you “seem like royalists”, as I’m not familiar with how the name is viewed in [name_f]France[/name_f]. I agree, [name_u]Lou[/name_u] sounds a bit Dr. Seuss-ish to me.

From your list, my favourite is [name_f]Lys[/name_f]. [name_f]Sunniva[/name_f]/Sunneva [name_f]Lys[/name_f] sounds great!

Some other ideas:

Céleste
[name_f]Claire[/name_f]
[name_u]Colombe[/name_u]
Daphné
[name_f]Estelle[/name_f]
[name_f]Flore[/name_f]
[name_f]Laure[/name_f]
[name_f]Margot[/name_f]
[name_f]Morgane[/name_f]
[name_f]Perle[/name_f]

[name_f]Sunniva[/name_f] [name_f]Perle[/name_f]

As for spelling, my immediate preference is for [name_f]Sunniva[/name_f] because it is the version I’m most familiar with. But if you’re concerned about pronunciation in [name_f]France[/name_f], I don’t see any issue with using Sunneva.

In a [name_u]French[/name_u]-speaking country I would definitely go with Sunneva for the pronunciation you want.

For a middle, have you considered Maëlys? While it is technically 3 syllables, the aë tends to run together making it feel shorter. This would allow you to get the LEESS sound hopefully without invoking thoughts of the fleur de lys.

[name_f]Lise[/name_f] also has a similar pronunciation to [name_f]Lys[/name_f] without the fleur de lys association.

Alternatively [name_f]Lilou[/name_f] could give you the best of [name_f]Lilas[/name_f] and [name_u]Lou[/name_u] while breaking up the rhyming patterns they each form with Sunneva.

Other options could be:

[name_u]Jeanne[/name_u]
[name_u]Marie[/name_u]
[name_f]Cosette[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucie[/name_f]
Céline
Chloë
[name_f]Maxine[/name_f]
[name_f]Aurore[/name_f]
[name_f]Faustine[/name_f]

Out of these options, I think Sunneva [name_f]Lise[/name_f] would be my favourite

I love [name_f]Sunniva[/name_f] (obviously…), and a do very much prefer it spelled this way. I love that you’ve chosen it for your little one - it’s a beautiful, beautiful name.

I really like [name_f]Sunniva[/name_f] [name_f]Lilas[/name_f] - it doesn’t actually rhyme as such (like [name_f]Lune[/name_f] and [name_u]Lou[/name_u] do), but rather both names just happen to finish with a similar sound…I’m a fan of that upbeat rhythm and musicality that the double-a/-uh endings create. [name_f]Sunniva[/name_f] [name_f]Lilas[/name_f] is gorgeous.

[name_f]Sunniva[/name_f] is lovely, but I agree Sunneva does seem to give you the pronunciation you prefer. I think Sunneva [name_f]Mai[/name_f] and Sunneva [name_f]Lys[/name_f] are my favourites!

[name_f]Sunniva[/name_f] looks best to me and feels more authentic. [name_f]Sunniva[/name_f] [name_f]Lys[/name_f] is nice as is [name_f]Sunniva[/name_f] [name_u]Lou[/name_u]

[name_f]Sunniva[/name_f] [name_f]Delphine[/name_f]
[name_f]Sunniva[/name_f] [name_f]Adele[/name_f]
[name_f]Sunniva[/name_f] [name_f]Fleur[/name_f]
[name_f]Sunniva[/name_f] [name_f]Lucie[/name_f]
[name_f]Sunniva[/name_f] [name_f]Perrine[/name_f]
[name_f]Sunniva[/name_f] Automne
[name_f]Sunniva[/name_f] [name_f]Margaux[/name_f]

[name_f]Sunniva[/name_f] [name_f]Lys[/name_f] would be stunning! I would just go for whatever spelling you think is easier.

[name_f]Sunniva[/name_f] is such a beautiful name. I personally prefer [name_f]Sunniva[/name_f], but that’s just what I’m most familiar with. I think you should use whichever spelling you think would work best.

I love all of your middle name options, I think they all go so nicely. I really love [name_f]Sunniva[/name_f] [name_f]Lune[/name_f]. I like the moon connection, and it’s such a pretty name. I kind of like the way it rhymes, I think it sounds sing songy (in a good way) and memorable. I also love [name_f]Sunniva[/name_f] [name_f]Lys[/name_f]. Short and sweet, but still beautiful. [name_f]My[/name_f] only hesitation is I’m not in [name_f]France[/name_f], so I’m not sure how strong that royalist association is. [name_f]Sunniva[/name_f] [name_f]Lilas[/name_f] is so sweet. I don’t think it rhymes as much. I love the [name_f]Lilac[/name_f] meaning too, it makes [name_f]Sunniva[/name_f] [name_f]Lilas[/name_f] such a bright, warm name.
I think [name_f]Sunniva[/name_f] [name_u]Lou[/name_u] is the cutest, but I agree that it sounds like a Seuss character (though I’m not sure I mind that! Seems pretty sweet to me). [name_f]Mai[/name_f] and [name_f]Rose[/name_f] are both pretty, but seem a little plain in comparison to your other choices.

In order, my top three is: [name_f]Sunniva[/name_f] [name_f]Lune[/name_f], [name_f]Sunniva[/name_f] [name_f]Lilas[/name_f], and [name_f]Sunniva[/name_f] [name_f]Lys[/name_f] (or Sunneva, if that’s the spelling you prefer!)

Wow, thank you all so much for this input!

I agree with many of you that [name_f]Sunniva[/name_f] seems more natural/looks right to me, but the pronunciation issue might end up being the deciding factor in favor of Sunneva and I’m sure I would get used to seeing it that way. I think I’ll need to mull it over a while longer…

And I love that so many of you love [name_f]Lys[/name_f]! It was definitely at the top of my original list. I may need to talk my husband into it and/or ask for a second opinion from another [name_u]French[/name_u] person about the connotations.

[name_f]Flore[/name_f], [name_f]Laure[/name_f], [name_f]Perle[/name_f], [name_f]Lise[/name_f], [name_f]Lucie[/name_f], and [name_f]Fleur[/name_f] are definitely getting added to the list!

I’ll try to update with our final decision! We don’t have long left now, I guess we’ll have to commit at some point…
