My husband and I are trying to decide a good middle name for our son. We have chosen the name Isen (pronounced like “They’re taking the hobbits to ISENgard”). Ignore my nerd reference, while I love LOTR, this name comes from the Anglo-[name_m]Saxon[/name_m] word meaning “iron.” (Which is why Tolkien used it I presume… haha)
Anyway, my husband likes the pairings “[name_m]Aart[/name_m]” (meaning eagle) and “[name_f]Ro[/name_f].” I really like the first name, but am so undecided on the middle name. We weren’t expecting to have another boy and this is the only name we have been able to agree on so far.
I wouldn’t mind a nerdy name pairing- we love fantasy novels and have been toying with some names from both LOTR, and The Wheel of Time series, but nothing seems to fit. We like to travel and are obsessed with outer space, anime, and the outdoors. So something close to nature or traveling might make a good match. I like names in the “out there” category, and my husband is more traditional. Any help or inspiration would be appreciated, thanks!
Siblings names:
[name_u]Ryan[/name_u] [name_m]Anthony[/name_m] (Older brother; comes from a family name)
Knives [name_f]Adrienne[/name_f] (unborn, but we’ve had this name picked for a daughter for YEARS! Comes from pop-culture and family names, respectively)
Names I like:
[name_u]Charlie[/name_u], [name_u]Cairo[/name_u], [name_m]Dimitri[/name_m], [name_m]Dagger[/name_m], [name_u]Sky[/name_u], [name_u]Ashley[/name_u], Oli,
My first thought when I saw this post’s title was “Seriously? Like Isengard?!” And I just had a fangirl moment.
My first thought after reading your post was how about Isen [name_m]Archer[/name_m]? Sounds similar to [name_m]Aart[/name_m] and is a good compromise between your love of out there names and his more mild taste.
Other suggestions:
Isen [name_u]Robin[/name_u] – Uses [name_f]Ro[/name_f] that he likes and it’s the name of one of Samwise Gamgee’s sons which is a bonus! (Sorry, I’m an [name_m]Lord[/name_m] of the Rings nerd, too, and I love encountering fellow fans in the forums:) )
Isen [name_m]Asher[/name_m] – I much prefer [name_m]Asher[/name_m] to [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] on a boy.
Isen [name_m]Alasdair[/name_m] – I noticed your other kids’ mns both started with A, so I thought it’d maybe be cool to carry that on.
Isen [name_m]Garrett[/name_m] – Really like the sound of this one that came to mind.
Isen [name_m]Jasper[/name_m]
Isen [name_m]Hugh[/name_m]
Isen [name_u]Rory[/name_u]
Isen [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m]
Isen [name_m]Wesley[/name_m]
It also sounds like “iron” in [name_m]German[/name_m] (Eisen.)
While it could work as a name, I feel like Tolkien’s languages have so much more to offer. There are whole dictionaries on Sindarin or Quenya (which I’ve studied back when I was naming my cats a long time ago ) I also recommend going through the Silmarillion (sort of the chronicle of Middle-[name_f]Earth[/name_f], as a prologue to LOTR) to find lots more names.
I was hoping you were going to say it’s pronounced like Isengard. Here are some out there ones:
Isen Alatar
Isen [name_m]Andor[/name_m]/[name_m]Anders[/name_m]
Isen Antares
Isen Ardamir
Isen [name_m]Peregrin[/name_m]/[name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] (not the best flow, but LOTR, means traveller, and related to the falcon)
Isen [name_m]Perseus[/name_m]
Isen Rorik/[name_m]Rurik[/name_m]
Isen Rúmil
Isen Telperion
Sorry, I know this isn’t your actual question, but just wanted to ask you please to reconsider naming a child Knives or [name_m]Dagger[/name_m]. I think Isen and your other ideas are all fine, but these two seem such violent and bloodthirsty names to bestow on a child, and even if they have specific pop-culture significance for you, I think they would receive a very negative reaction in the wider community. Thanks, that’s my two cents’ worth…
