My husband and I have fallen in love with the name [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] ( pronounced [name_f]ELS[/name_f]- peth; Scottish form of [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]) and plan on using it for our first daughter. We love the shortform, [name_f]Elsie[/name_f], and will be using that more than the longer [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f], at least when she is little.
However, I’m running into a middle name conundrum! We need a name to go with both [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] and [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f], as we’ll be using both, but that means that we can’t really use a name ending in a “y” or “ie” sound. For example, [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] is lovely, but [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] is a little too… wishy-washy. Not sure how much a nn will matter when choosing a middle name, but something we want to think about.
My husband has Japanese heritage, so we are hoping to use a Japanese name for our children’s middle name. Although with such a strong Scottish first name, its proving to be difficult! Any suggestions (Japanese or not) for a middle name for [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] would be greatly appreciated!
My sister is [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] and that’s what we called her when she was young. [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] is pretty in my opinion. Some other ideas:
[name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] [name_u]Nori[/name_u]
[name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] [name_f]Rumi[/name_f]
[name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] Yumiko
[name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] [name_f]Megan[/name_f]
[name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] [name_f]Sakura[/name_f]
[name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] [name_f]Kaori[/name_f]
[name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] [name_f]Nimue[/name_f]
One final thought, you could use a double middle name.
[name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] [name_f]Kaori[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] [name_f]Nimue[/name_f] [name_f]Sakura[/name_f]
First of all, I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] nm [name_f]Elsie[/name_f], great choice! I included some Japanese options and some not Japanese options.
For what it’s worth, I’m not sure it matters that much that the middle name sound good with [name_f]Elsie[/name_f], obviously if that’s important to you, take it into consideration but really I think most people use their middle name pretty rarely and usually it’s in a context of wanting the full complete name anyways, so you would use [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f]. For instance, one situation where you would use the middle name is signing up for a passport, and you would definitely be using [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] with that. Unless you actively plan on frequently calling her [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] Middle Name, I wouldn’t worry too much about it. I think [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] nn [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] is lovely.
I think [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] is lovely! Unless you yourself think you would call her “[name_f]Elsie[/name_f] [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f]” for some reason, it should be a non-issue…
My daughter is generally called [name_f]Libby[/name_f], sometimes [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], occasionally [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Coralie[/name_f] – never “[name_f]Libby[/name_f] [name_f]Coralie[/name_f]”!
("[name_u]Gus[/name_u] [name_m]George[/name_m]" sounds even worse [name_f]IMO[/name_f] – no one had better ever call our [name_m]Magnus[/name_m] that!)
This is helpful info! It’s true that in cases when you would use the middle name (important documents) you’re generally going with the full first, last, and middle names.
^^ Yes, formal situations and also when you’re in trouble: “[name_m]Charles[/name_m] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m], I’ve asked you twice; if you don’t stop…etc!”
And our kids also get it when we’re impressed but not terribly pleased: “Eleanor Iris, I cannot believe you just managed to…” Haha!
