Middle name for Huckleberry?

I know what some of you are thinking. Allow me to preemptively respond by reminded you of that age old bit of sage advice: If you can’t say something nice [or constructive], please shush:)

Anyhow, my husband and I have decided on [name]Huckleberry[/name] for our second baby boy. Big brother is [name]Holden[/name] (after THE [name]Holden[/name] Caulfield) [name]Timothy[/name] (after his daddy). We didn’t do the “H” thing on purpose, but we wanted something thematically linked (hooray, literary names!) and/or personally meaningful, and our family names all kind of suck or are otherwise incompatible. Anyway, I love the character [name]Huckleberry[/name] [name]Finn[/name], and we both rather adore the nickname [name]Huck[/name], so that’s where we are.

The trouble now is coming up with a middle name. [name]Huckleberry[/name] is a tough match. So is our super-[name]German[/name] surname (9 letters, only 2 vowels). I’ve come up with a smattering of names I think could work (they’re both personally significant and sound decent with the other names), and I’m hoping to get a little feedback about them:

[name]Jude[/name]
[name]Phoenix[/name]
[name]Finn[/name] (yes, really.)
[name]Bay[/name]
[name]Roan[/name]
[name]Phelan[/name]

I’m also open to other suggestions!

Thanks!

The problem with [name]Huckleberry[/name] is that because it is so whimsical and rare, pairing it with something unusual like [name]Phelan[/name] or a nature name like [name]Bay[/name] makes it feel really over-the-top. I would definitely bring it down a few notches for the middle name. [name]Huckleberry[/name] [name]Jude[/name] works. Some other ideas:

[name]Huckleberry[/name] [name]David[/name]
[name]Huckleberry[/name] [name]Gavin[/name]
[name]Huckleberry[/name] [name]Jack[/name]
[name]Huckleberry[/name] [name]Nathan[/name]
[name]Huckleberry[/name] [name]Jonah[/name]
[name]Huckleberry[/name] [name]Alec[/name]
[name]Huckleberry[/name] [name]Isaac[/name]
[name]Huckleberry[/name] [name]Thomas[/name]
[name]Huckleberry[/name] [name]Ezra[/name]
[name]Huckleberry[/name] [name]Samuel[/name]
[name]Huckleberry[/name] [name]Beckett[/name]
[name]Huckleberry[/name] [name]Ryan[/name]
[name]Huckleberry[/name] [name]Russell[/name]
[name]Huckleberry[/name] [name]Brennan[/name]
[name]Huckleberry[/name] [name]Simon[/name]
[name]Huckleberry[/name] [name]Emmett[/name]
[name]Huckleberry[/name] [name]Grant[/name]
[name]Huckleberry[/name] [name]Joel[/name]
[name]Huckleberry[/name] [name]Asher[/name]
[name]Huckleberry[/name] [name]Caleb[/name]
[name]Huckleberry[/name] [name]Luke[/name]
[name]Huckleberry[/name] [name]Owen[/name]

Thanks for your suggestions…I agree with your take on pairing [name]Huckleberry[/name] with nature/unusual names, and [name]Jude[/name] is definitely my favorite of the bunch i listed. What’s making this especially difficult is that I find it hard to really care about and want to commit to a name just based on my liking its sound. sigh this is gonna be a tough one:)

Couldn’t have said it better.

My initial thought was [name]Huckleberry[/name] [name]James[/name].
But I also like [name]Huckleberry[/name] [name]Charles[/name], [name]Huckleberry[/name] [name]George[/name], and [name]Huckleberry[/name] [name]John[/name].

I do like the sound of [name]James[/name]. I’d have to work on getting over it not being personally meaningful. (I’m a little neurotic:))

I like [name]Huckleberry[/name] [name]Jude[/name]
I also really love [name]Huckleberry[/name] [name]Tom[/name] or [name]Huckleberry[/name] [name]Joe[/name]
Others
[name]Huckleberry[/name] [name]Cole[/name]
[name]Huckleberry[/name] [name]Jack[/name]
[name]Huckleberry[/name] [name]Sam[/name]
[name]Huckleberry[/name] [name]Jim[/name]
[name]Huckleberry[/name] [name]Flynn[/name]

I would go with [name]Jude[/name].

I like [name]Huckleberry[/name] [name]Jude[/name], it makes a whimsical name like [name]Huckleberry[/name] feel grounded. I think that using [name]Huckleberry[/name] [name]Finn[/name] is a bit overdone and the other options make the name seem a bit too “out there”. [name]Jude[/name] is definitely my favourite from your list

Thanks everyone…I’m leaning ever more decisively toward [name]Jude[/name]

[name]Jude[/name] is my favorite too and I love the name [name]Huckleberry[/name]!

I like the name [name]Huckleberry[/name]. A LOT. I’ve never seen it used, so. Yay! [name]Huckleberry[/name] [name]Jude[/name] sounds great too.

I named my gorgeous son, [name]Finn[/name], in 1996. People “warned” me at the time that he would be teased and called “[name]Huck[/name]”…to which I replied, “SO what”. I grew up as a female red head, last name [name]Gordon[/name] in the 70’s, so I was called “[name]Flash[/name] [name]Gordon[/name]” - didn’t kill me…(yes, I had my only child at 39 yrs young).

SO, I say [name]Huckleberry[/name] [name]Finn[/name]!

… and, BTW - [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Holden[/name]!

Awesome feedback everyone:) And boy am I jealous of the nickname [name]Flash[/name] [name]Gordon[/name]!

My favorite is [name]Jude[/name] from your names. [name]Just[/name] please don’t use [name]Finn[/name]. Personally I think [name]Huckleberry[/name] is amazing! I just hope that Sir [name]Huck[/name] doesn’t resent his parents someday.

I’m feeling pretty strongly about [name]Jude[/name] at this point. My maternal grandmother–with whom I was very, very close, and who died when I was 17–suffered with Lupus for about half her life. She spent a lot of time in the hospital while I was growing up, but always managed to find the energy to take me shopping, and to see horror movies (saw Misery AND Se7en with her), and to create Halloween costumes for me that drag queens would have been proud of. She always said (and I believe) that she stayed alive for her grandchildren.

Anyhow, throughout her sickness, she always prayed to St. [name]Jude[/name]. [name]Hope[/name] for the hopeless and all. I thought [name]Jude[/name] would be a neat way to honor her:)
