Middle name for James

Due 8/23 with our first and its a boy. I agreed to [name]James[/name] after my husband’s grampa ([name]James[/name] [name]Wilson[/name] [name]Nyx[/name]). My husband is [name]Andrew[/name] [name]Wilson[/name] [name]Nyx[/name] and he wants to continue mn [name]Wilson[/name], but I don’t want ‘n’ ending with our surname. My solution was mn [name]Walter[/name]. However it is my paternal grampa’s name, the problem is that grampa [name]Walt[/name] was a worthless, fill-in-the-blank, who abandoned my dad and his brothers…needless to say, while I like the name we just cannot use it.

With our surname I need a mn that doesn’t end with ‘n’, doesn’t have and ‘x’, ‘s’ or ‘ck/k’, and has at least 2 syllables.

This eliminates some of my favorite family names ([name]Felix[/name], [name]Alan[/name], [name]Bruce[/name], [name]Scott[/name], [name]Halsten[/name], Stokes, Sykes) and most boy names I’m just fond of like [name]Silas[/name], [name]Quinn[/name], [name]Calvin[/name], [name]Atticus[/name], [name]Barnabas[/name], and [name]Titus[/name].

Besides the unusable [name]Walter[/name], I like [name]Everett[/name], [name]Emmett[/name], [name]Henry[/name], but none really strike me as the best option.

Please help me find the right middle name for [name]James[/name]

i like james everett and james atticus x

Oh, another thing… Middle names beginning with any vowel poses some possible problems with initials–

[name]James[/name] [name]Everett[/name] [name]Nyx[/name] -J.E.N (I have 3 best friends named [name]Jen[/name] and my initials are J.E.N. So its a little much)
[name]James[/name] [name]Atticus[/name] [name]Nyx[/name]- J.A.N, - my [name]MIL[/name] is [name]Janice[/name]

J.I.N./J.O.N. are okay but I can’t think of an “I” or "O"name that I like, and I can’t fathom a “U” name.

Sooooo, I’m even more stumped now!

Okay how about

[name]James[/name] [name]Wyatt[/name]
[name]James[/name] [name]Phillip[/name]
[name]James[/name] [name]Mayer[/name]
[name]James[/name] [name]Kelby[/name]
[name]James[/name] [name]Laszlo[/name]
[name]James[/name] [name]Leopold[/name]
[name]James[/name] Hasting
[name]James[/name] Hallam
[name]James[/name] [name]Foster[/name]
[name]James[/name] [name]Edward[/name]
[name]James[/name] [name]Dempsey[/name]
[name]James[/name] [name]Culley[/name]
[name]James[/name] [name]Christopher[/name]
[name]James[/name] [name]Callaway[/name]
[name]James[/name] [name]Archer[/name]
[name]James[/name] [name]August[/name]
[name]James[/name] [name]Arlo[/name]
[name]James[/name] [name]Alastair[/name]
[name]James[/name] [name]Alexander[/name]

[name]Hope[/name] this helps!

So love [name]Edward[/name], but alas, I would be remiss if I didn’t confess that I read the Twilight saga and saw the movies.

[name]Wyatt[/name] is good, and Hasting has some allure, but there’s a Hasting’s store here.

ahh, Twilight  I’ve read them too. but still [name]James[/name] [name]Edward[/name] is a lovely name and since it’s in the middle slot maybe not as twilightish? and maybe [name]Fielding[/name] instead of Hasting?

Good luck!

[name]Hi[/name], [name]Jacquelyn[/name]!

It’s too bad that you can’t use [name]Walter[/name]; [name]James[/name] [name]Walter[/name] [name]Nyx[/name] is so handsome!

[name]Asher[/name] and [name]Felix[/name] both mean “happy”, so what about [name]James[/name] [name]Asher[/name] [name]Nyx[/name]?

Part of [name]Alan[/name]'s meaning is “handsome”. [name]Kenneth[/name] also happens to mean “handsome”… [name]James[/name] [name]Kenneth[/name] [name]Nyx[/name]?

[name]Bruno[/name]'s beginning is the same as [name]Bruce[/name]'s… [name]James[/name] [name]Bruno[/name] [name]Nyx[/name]?

[name]Alcott[/name]'s ending is the same as [name]Scott[/name]'s, so maybe [name]James[/name] [name]Alcott[/name] [name]Nyx[/name] would work?

[name]Halsten[/name] can shorten to [name]Hal[/name], as can [name]Henry[/name]. [name]James[/name] [name]Henry[/name] [name]Nyx[/name]?

Stokes contains “oke”, which is pronounced like “oak”. [name]James[/name] [name]Oak[/name] [name]Nyx[/name]? [name]James[/name] [name]Oakley[/name] [name]Nyx[/name]?

Sykes contains “yke”, which is like “[name]Ike[/name]”. [name]Isaac[/name] can shorten to [name]Ike[/name]… [name]James[/name] [name]Isaac[/name] [name]Nyx[/name]?

[name]George[/name] [name]Eliot[/name] is the author of [name]Silas[/name] Marner. [name]James[/name] [name]Eliot[/name] [name]Nyx[/name]?

[name]Quinn[/name] could be short for [name]Tarquin[/name]. [name]Torquil[/name] is similar to [name]Tarquin[/name]… [name]James[/name] [name]Torquil[/name] [name]Nyx[/name]?

[name]Alvin[/name] is similar to [name]Calvin[/name]. [name]Theodore[/name] is another chipmunk name, like [name]Alvin[/name]… [name]James[/name] [name]Theodore[/name] [name]Nyx[/name]? [name]James[/name] [name]Theo[/name] [name]Nyx[/name]?

[name]August[/name] is similar to [name]Atticus[/name], and it makes sense as a middle if that’s his birth month. [name]James[/name] [name]August[/name] [name]Nyx[/name]? [name]James[/name] [name]Augustine[/name] [name]Nyx[/name]?

[name]Barnaby[/name] is a form of [name]Barnabas[/name]… [name]James[/name] [name]Barnaby[/name] [name]Nyx[/name]?

Actually, I don’t think that [name]James[/name] [name]Titus[/name] [name]Nyx[/name] is all that bad…

Best wishes!

Thoughtful reply!
Thank you.

[name]Barnaby[/name] is pretty good, but maybe not better than [name]Henry[/name], and still second to me to [name]Barnabas[/name].

[name]Isaac[/name], I like but the hard K sound is harsh with [name]Nyx[/name].

Middles ending with S slide into [name]Nyx[/name] and I hear -Snyx…Which I realize is a problem with [name]James[/name], but I’ve come to terms with that I guess lol! (Similarly, starting the middle with S seems to mesh with [name]James[/name]. [name]James[/name] [name]Scott[/name] sounds like [name]James[/name] Cott) but I really like [name]Silas[/name] anyway.

[name]Oak[/name]- too short but nice, manly.
[name]Elliot[/name]- an excellent name, but initials J.E.N. aren’t to my liking for a boy.

SOoooo-- [name]Barnaby[/name], [name]Henry[/name], and [name]Titus[/name] come through to the next round! I found a Ryal in the family tree, and my maternal grampa’s middle name is [name]Kennedy[/name], so there are those to think about.

I didn’t think [name]Walter[/name] would be a problem, but I mentioned to my mom and she was certain that my dad would be offended, so its out :frowning:

[name]Hi[/name], again!

Other [name]Barn[/name]- names include [name]Barney[/name], [name]Barnett[/name], and [name]Barnum[/name], but they aren’t any better with [name]Nyx[/name]…

[name]James[/name] [name]Isaiah[/name] [name]Nyx[/name] and [name]James[/name] [name]Isidore[/name] [name]Nyx[/name] could work in place of [name]James[/name] [name]Isaac[/name]. Now that I think about it, [name]James[/name] Is____ [name]Nyx[/name] has a lot of S.

I think that [name]Isaac[/name], [name]Silas[/name], and [name]Elliot[/name] (but probably not [name]Silas[/name] and [name]Elliot[/name] together, if the [name]Silas[/name] Marner/[name]George[/name] [name]Eliot[/name] connection is too matchy) could work as brothers for [name]James[/name], if you aren’t worried about both [name]James[/name] and [name]Silas[/name] ending in S. [name]Silas[/name] [name]Oak[/name] [name]Nyx[/name]?A bit K heavy with [name]Oak[/name] and [name]Nyx[/name], though… And initials spell [name]SON[/name]… Not a bad thing, and at least it’s appropriate for a boy…

Since both [name]James[/name] and [name]Nyx[/name] are short names, I’ll vote for [name]James[/name] [name]Barnaby[/name] [name]Nyx[/name], because it’s the longest and most distinctive. All of your options are great, though!

[name]James[/name] [name]Rupert[/name]

Good luck!

I love the combo of [name]James[/name] [name]Rupert[/name], just love it. [name]Rupert[/name] has been a long time favourite of mine and [name]James[/name] is on the top of my list.

Otherwise

What about [name]Walker[/name]? Its my mom’s middle name (but not maiden, but it is a family name). My hubby may resist since he considers it as exclusively Native American. Where he got that I don’t know, maybe another Oklahoma thing! On nameberry it is defined as English for cloth worker.

I could win him over on preserving the W. initial like his and his grampa’s, though I’ll be allowing a ‘k’ against my better judgement. ‘K’ followed by ‘X’ just seems a little harsh.

[name]James[/name] [name]Walker[/name] [name]Nyx[/name]

    • one measley letter off of my preferred [name]Walter[/name] and yet so different!

I think [name]Walker[/name] is a fabulous name and of course works brilliantly with the combo. It is a very English name.

[name]James[/name] [name]Walker[/name] very, very nice.

Think I’m going to try for [name]Walker[/name]. I asked my mom today where her mom got it, and she tells me [name]Walker[/name] is my grampa’s great grandfather’s mother’s maiden name…but I’ll have to ask my grampa to be sure because at that point one generation had immigrated while the previous had died in Poland, so a lot of our history is fuzzy at that time and the geneology pretty much stops there.

Regardless, I like [name]Walker[/name] better than [name]Wilson[/name], though less than [name]Walter[/name], but it’s a good compromise!

I like [name]Walker[/name], although [name]Walter[/name] is slightly nicer.
