Hi! My partner and I are set on the name [name_f]Maya[/name_f] and for the longest time were in love with the middle name combo [name_f]Maya[/name_f] [name_f]June[/name_f]. FYI our last name is 2 syllables and [name_f]Maya[/name_f] will be pronounced My-uh. However it recently dawned on me that it looks like [name_f]May[/name_f] [name_f]June[/name_f] when written down. [name_m]Like[/name_m] you’re writing down the months in order… [name_f]May[/name_f], [name_f]June[/name_f], [name_m]July[/name_m], etc. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though it’s not pronounced May-a, I feel half of people will already assume it is and even though I am obsessed with how it sounds out loud, it has bothered me seeing it written down and we are now on hunt for new middle name. Also not sure if I’m overthinking this.
Do you think [name_f]Maya[/name_f] [name_f]June[/name_f] is too much like [name_f]May[/name_f] and [name_f]June[/name_f]?
Would love any suggestions for middle names, preferably 1 or 3+ syllable names not ending in the same “a” sound as [name_f]Maya[/name_f]. Some I like are [name_f]Rue[/name_f] (can’t use for family reasons), [name_m]Bloom[/name_m] (husband has said nope), [name_f]Sage[/name_f]. Open to 2 syllable names but I find few and far between have a nice flow considering her first and last names are 2 syllable too. Lots of “filler” middle names sound nice but they’re just too basic for me. Aka [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Jade[/name_f], [name_f]Eve[/name_f], [name_f]Grace[/name_f] (beautiful names and no shade if you have used these!!)
Due very soon and this is consuming my thoughts so any input appreciated.
I think Maya June is lovely and you won’t run into this problem. However, if it is really bothering you, some alternatives:
Maya Hope
Maya Jean
Maya Jude
Maya Pearl
Maya Ruth
Maya Fae
Maya Quinn
Eta: you could always spell it Maia, too, of course. Though I understand when a particular spelling just feels right. I feel that way about Kaya vs Kaia!
Some ideas that might keep a similar sound without the visual distraction you are experiencing:
[name_f]Maya[/name_f] [name_f]Juniper[/name_f]
[name_f]Maya[/name_f] [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]
[name_f]Maya[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
Whether it ends up being [name_f]Maya[/name_f] [name_f]June[/name_f] or a new option, I’m sure you will make a beautiful choice! Congratulations on the upcoming birth of your daughter!
Maya June reminds me of Mama June, a reality star first, and then May June. Personally I would find another middle for these reasons, but it is a nice name so if you love it, go for it.
I wouldn’t use Maya June but that’s because it would make me twitch - “May and June”. But if you love it, it’s fine! Think Olivia Munn’s daughter very similarly named.
I do think [name_f]Maya[/name_f] [name_f]June[/name_f] looks a little too like [name_f]May[/name_f] [name_f]June[/name_f] for my liking, which is a shame as it’s such a pretty combo!
[name_f]Maya[/name_f] [name_f]June[/name_f] has a really nice ring to it – could be hard to replicate. I wouldn’t have noticed the proximity to the months. I personally don’t see the coincidence as a deal breaker, especially given the context of [name_f]Maya[/name_f] [name_f]June[/name_f] being a person’s name, and very familiar people names at that, but that’s easier for me to say from the outside looking in.
Pronunciation of [name_f]Maya[/name_f] will need occasional correcting regardless of middle name choice, and middle names are mostly hidden facts about a person, so I don’t think it has any real impact on daily life. That said, if the thought about the months is eating at you and truly interfering with your enjoyment of the name, it makes sense to find an alternative. On the other hand, we can be overly fixated on name criticisms during the decision making process, and later find most if not all of these fade away, especially after the first year or so.
I assume you’re not keen on the [name_f]Maia[/name_f] spelling but I’m mentioning it anyway because I have personally found that my preferences for spelling have changed over time for some names, and it could happen for you too. Often because I hadn’t fully considered the alternatives, and gravitated towards what was familiar by default (e.g. going from [name_f]Claire[/name_f] to Clare). [name_f]Maja[/name_f] is another spelling you could consider, and a current crush of mine.
If your search comes up blank and you can’t find any alternatives you both like more than [name_f]Maya[/name_f] [name_f]June[/name_f], I’d take that to mean [name_f]Maya[/name_f] [name_f]June[/name_f] is the one. A name doesn’t need to be perfect for it to be the right choice. I wish you all the best!
I think [name_f]Maya[/name_f] [name_f]June[/name_f] sounds lovely, but I can see your dilemma. I think similar sounding names like [name_f]Jean[/name_f], [name_f]Joy[/name_f], [name_f]Joan[/name_f], [name_f]Juno[/name_f] or [name_f]Jane[/name_f] could work. I also like [name_f]Maya[/name_f] [name_f]Blossom[/name_f] and [name_f]Maya[/name_f] [name_f]Wren[/name_f] as similar names to some of your list.
It IS a lot like “May, June” now that you mention it. Now that’s not a bad association at all, but you also shouldn’t name your child something that bothers you.
Middle names:
[name_f]Maya[/name_f] [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] or [name_f]Maya[/name_f] [name_f]Juniper[/name_f] (if you wanted to keep some of the sounds from [name_f]June[/name_f])
[name_f]Maya[/name_f] [name_f]Lavender[/name_f], [name_f]Maya[/name_f] [name_f]Dove[/name_f], [name_f]Maya[/name_f] [name_m]Fern[/name_m], [name_f]Maya[/name_f] [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] (since I noticed a lot of nature names in your list)
It is like [name_f]May[/name_f] and [name_f]June[/name_f] but I think both are well-established enough as names that it could work. Sure, I may think of [name_f]May[/name_f] and [name_f]June[/name_f] on seeing it written and I might find it interesting (as in, were those months both significant, did you just like both names etc) but not bothersome?
That said, if it’s worrying you, I’d say look for something else
