We just found out we are having a girl and locked down a first name months ago, but now are back to the list to choose a middle name. Our last name starts with L and is one syllable. Here are the options:
Vivienne Scarlet
Vivienne Harper ( can classic and modern go together?)
Vivienne S (S stands for my mother’s maiden name which we are not crazy about, but love the initials V.S.L., so we would just use the first letter)
I like [name]Vivienne[/name] [name]Harper[/name], that’s got a nice flow to it. I personally wouldn’t do [name]Vivienne[/name] [name]Scarlet[/name] because [name]Vivien[/name] [name]Leigh[/name] played [name]Scarlett[/name] O’[name]Hara[/name] and even though you have different spellings I just wouldn’t want my child’s name to be a pop culture reference.
[name]Vivienne[/name] [name]Colette[/name] is definitely very French, but it’s nice, so it depends if that bothers you or not. [name]Vivienne[/name] [name]Briar[/name] didn’t strike me at first, but now that I’m looking over the list I think that one has a nice ring to it. [name]Vivienne[/name] and [name]Cora[/name] don’t match well imo.
Wouldn’t you consider another S middle name other than [name]Scarlet[/name] or just “S”? Perhaps [name]Vivienne[/name] [name]Samantha[/name]?
I would definitely go with a full name with S and not just the initial S if you go that route. A minor consideration with that: VS evokes both “versus” and [name]Victoria[/name]'s [name]Secret[/name] to me. But VSL looks very pretty somehow and neither of those things are really too bad : D. [name]Just[/name] if you are struggling to decide, to me it would tip me mildly toward something else for the first letter, but a nod to your mother’s maiden name is a cool idea. What about a nod to your mother’s first name, or, could there be a first name that incorporates more sounds of your mother’s maiden name besides just the S?
These are all nice - [name]Vivienne[/name] [name]Cora[/name] is my favorite by far. [name]Vivienne[/name] [name]Scarlet[/name] works, I’d spell it [name]Vivienne[/name] [name]Scarlett[/name] but it’s OK either way, however since [name]Vivien[/name] [name]Leigh[/name] is already kind of similar to your last name and the actress by that name played [name]Scarlett[/name] O’[name]Hara[/name], it’s a bit much perhaps? But middles are not that often known anyway.
[name]Vivienne[/name] [name]Harper[/name] combines fine, it’s just that both have been used by celebrity babies recently, so it kind of makes [name]Vivienne[/name] feel less classic and more of the moment, but it’s still pretty.
[name]Vivienne[/name] [name]Colette[/name] isn’t too French for my taste, it’s pretty, but it does seem you have reservations?
[name]Vivienne[/name] [name]Briar[/name] is pretty and fun. My second pick after [name]Vivienne[/name] [name]Cora[/name].
[name]Vivienne[/name] [name]Cora[/name] though I just can’t think of any reservation at all about, very pretty.
I’d recommend [name]Vivienne[/name] [name]Cora[/name], [name]Vivienne[/name] [name]Briar[/name], or maybe picking out a different S middle name.
[name]Vivienne[/name] [name]Blair[/name] - [name]LOVE[/name] [name]LOVE[/name] [name]LOVE[/name] this
[name]Vivienne[/name] [name]Scarlet[/name]
[name]Vivienne[/name] [name]Colette[/name] - I think this sounds clunky
[name]Vivienne[/name] [name]Cora[/name] - Also clunky, no flow
[name]Vivienne[/name] [name]Harper[/name] - Yes classic and modern go together, but I do not like the flow of this at all
[name]Blair[/name] is definitely my favorite by FAR. I think the rest of the combos have flow problems.
A two-syllable S name would be very pretty and sound nice. [name]Sonnet[/name] maybe? I love the sound of [name]Siobhan[/name] but perhaps there is too much of a clash with the spelling / origins of the names together. An alternative to [name]Colette[/name] is [name]Cosette[/name], made popular by the movie production of [name]Les[/name] Miserables.
I like [name]Vivienne[/name] [name]Colette[/name].
I wouldn’t do S. If you don’t like the name, then don’t use it, using a single letter in place of a middle name feels like a huge waste and honestly…S could stand for anything.
