My sweet daughter [name_f]Sabina[/name_f] has been middle nameless for months. Papa and I could NOT agree and have gone round and round for almost a year. Most of our first choices have been vetoed by one or the other of us.
The one name we both connect to and like is [name_f]Lucia[/name_f]. The problem is a difference in opinion over pronunciation.
I prefer ‘Loo see ya’ and he ‘loo thia’
He is from Galicia Spain where ‘c’ is pronounced as ‘th’
Is it crazy to go with a middle name when we don’t agree on pronunciation?
Does one sound better than the other with [name_f]Sabina[/name_f] (nickname [name_f]Nina[/name_f])
I am at my wits end in this search for the right middle name! And this is the closest we have gotten.
My parents pronounce my first name differently (they’re from different states in Australia). It’s not as obvious as your [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] pronunciations, but it’s my first name. I honestly think it’s kind of quirky and I like it.
I don’t see it being an issue. Middle names aren’t said all that much anyway, and it sounds like your pronunciation preferences are due to differences in accent and origin. I think it’s entirely legitimate to pronounce names differently in that case - just like [name_m]Felix[/name_m] might be “[name_f]FAY[/name_f]-lix” to a [name_m]French[/name_m] parent and their family but “[name_u]FEE[/name_u]-lix” to their English-speaking family, or an [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] would be “al-ek-SAN-duh” to me but “al-eg-ZAAN-duh” to my DH (because we have different regional British accents). That wouldn’t bother me in the slightest.
Most important is that you both love [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] with your pronunciation - I don’t think it’s a problem if those pronunciations are a little different. [name_f]Sabina[/name_f] [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] is stunning with either pronunciation [name_f]IMO[/name_f]
I don’t think the differences in pronunciation are a dealbreaker at all, especially since the reasoning is language/accent and since it’s a middle name. It might be slightly more problematic if you were pronouncing her first name differently, but really how often are you going to use her full name? Kids are pretty versatile and it should be easy for her to understand that her parents pronounce her middle name a little bit differently.
[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Sabina[/name_f] [name_f]Luci[/name_f]-[name_f]Thia[/name_f].lol lol. !, Luciea , Luthia.Both are lovely.But I would use a variation in spelling depending on how I wanted it pronounced.

I was worried it would be a point of confusion and contention…difference in pronunciation. I suppose I can just hope that my daughter too, finds it ‘quirky.’. Mama and Papa just say my name differently.
Worst case scenario, his pronunciation drives me nuts and/or simply the idea that husband refuses to concede to my preference makes me nuts.
Sigh…after so many months of debate…it just needs to be settled.
I agree…the similar ending in [name_f]Sabina[/name_f] and [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] is a bit repetitive but very common in Spanish names…so I am ok with it.
There is a familial connection to [name_f]Lucia[/name_f]…another reason we kept coming back to it despite the difference in opinion.
