Middle name rules?

Is the middle name spot an ‘anything goes’ kinda thing?

We want to honor my husbands Grandpa [name_m]Paul[/name_m] but all our first name faves are single syllable and the flow is trash.

My husband has fond memories of going to an ice cream place called Hoffman’s with his Grandpa and we actually really like how it fits with our first name choices.

I’m not worried about having to explain it since people already ask if our son Grants name is a family name- it’s not.

Thoughts?

First name choices- [name_u]Dean[/name_u], [name_u]Chase[/name_u], [name_u]Max[/name_u], [name_u]Seth[/name_u].

You could use Paulao or [name_m]Paulo[/name_m] as a middle name.

Meaning is more important than flow. Use [name_m]Paul[/name_m].

I’m team anything goes with the mn. I think it’s all about finding something that is special and feels good for you, but also in a way that sounds nice as a whole.

I think Hoffman would make an interesting, sentimental choice, especially with the fn options. I like seeing people use a creative nod to a relative over just inserting a name they aren’t crazy about.

There’s always the option of using [name_m]Paul[/name_m] as a second mn as well.

We really don’t like any of the [name_m]Paul[/name_m] alternatives and Grandpa [name_m]Paul[/name_m]’s middle name was [name_u]LaVern[/name_u] which is soooooo not our style. Gives me [name_u]LaVern[/name_u] and [name_f]Shirley[/name_f] vibes. His Grandpas last name is also one syllable so that’s no good either.

I like your idea of using something that represents a sentimental memory. I think that’s perfectly fine especially since you aren’t fond of the grandfathers Names.

I think flow is important and your idea seems way more thoughtful and unique then the traditional passing on a name.

I love middle names that honour someone special!! I also love [name_u]Chase[/name_u] and [name_u]Max[/name_u] on your list! What about [name_m]Maximus[/name_m] [name_m]Paul[/name_m] or [name_m]Maxwell[/name_m] [name_m]Paul[/name_m]? I can’t think of a longer version of [name_u]Chase[/name_u]!! But I definitely think if you love the first name, just use it because chances are you’ll regret if you never use it. [name_m]Just[/name_m] to give you a few options I’ve got a few suggestions based on your favourites that I think flow well with [name_m]Paul[/name_m]:

[name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Paul[/name_m]
[name_m]Harrison[/name_m] [name_m]Paul[/name_m] nn [name_m]Harry[/name_m]
[name_u]Emmett[/name_u] [name_m]Paul[/name_m]
[name_u]Ryan[/name_u] [name_m]Paul[/name_m]
[name_u]Aiden[/name_u] [name_m]Paul[/name_m]
[name_m]Zachary[/name_m] [name_m]Paul[/name_m] nn [name_m]Zach[/name_m]
[name_u]Brooklyn[/name_u] [name_m]Paul[/name_m] nn [name_m]Brooks[/name_m]
[name_u]Dylan[/name_u] [name_m]Paul[/name_m]
[name_m]Hugo[/name_m] [name_m]Paul[/name_m]
[name_m]Nathan[/name_m] [name_m]Paul[/name_m] nn [name_m]Nate[/name_m]
[name_m]Connor[/name_m] [name_m]Paul[/name_m]
[name_m]Conrad[/name_m] [name_m]Paul[/name_m]
[name_m]Jackson[/name_m] [name_m]Paul[/name_m]
[name_u]Tyson[/name_u] [name_m]Paul[/name_m]
[name_u]Carson[/name_u] [name_m]Paul[/name_m]
[name_u]Carter[/name_u] [name_m]Paul[/name_m]
[name_u]Logan[/name_u] [name_m]Paul[/name_m]
[name_u]Hudson[/name_u] [name_m]Paul[/name_m]
[name_m]Harvey[/name_m] [name_m]Paul[/name_m]

Thanks! We have some longer names on our list and a few are the ones you suggested but I’m just not loving them.

We don’t name our babies until we see them in person so I wanted to get a solid list with options on it.

Plus I’m partial to using [name_u]Dean[/name_u] because it’s a family name on my side and we had it at the top of our list for our first son be he didn’t look like a [name_u]Dean[/name_u] at all!

If Hoffman makes you happy, use it. Perfect flow is not a requirement, but if it’s important to you, that’s fine too.

It’s all about what feels the most special to you. For me, the name of the person I’m honoring feels more like an honor than a name that reminds you of them… my middle name is an honor name and I’ve always loved the special connection I felt to my namesake. I’m unsure I would have felt that connection if my middle was a name or word that made my mom think of her aunt instead of her aunt’s name.
I also think having a meaningful middle name is more important than a perfect flow.
But, if Hoffman feels significant to you, go for it. There are no rules. I think it’s clear you’re putting a lot of thought into giving this little guy a great name and I am sure he’ll appreciate whatever moniker you decide on.

What about Paulson? [name_u]Dean[/name_u] Paulson ___. Literally means “[name_m]Paul[/name_m]'s son”, in this case grandson.

I like [name_u]Dean[/name_u] [name_m]Paul[/name_m] Hoffman xxx if two names a possibility! Or even using [name_m]Paul[/name_m] as a first? [name_m]Paul[/name_m] Hoffman?

Besides the [name_m]Maxwell[/name_m] option, what about [name_m]Charles[/name_m], [name_m]Charleston[/name_m] or Charleson nn [name_u]Chase[/name_u] which might flow better to [name_m]Paul[/name_m] as well as give your kid a name that’s more comparable to [name_m]Grant[/name_m], which is quite a distinguished name? Unless you see [name_m]Grant[/name_m] as a casual, sporty-guy name in which case [name_u]Dean[/name_u] or [name_u]Chase[/name_u] is perfectly suited.

Out of the top picks [name_u]Dean[/name_u] is definitely my favorite. I actually think [name_u]Dean[/name_u] [name_m]Paul[/name_m] sounds great.

I think [name_u]Dean[/name_u] [name_m]Paul[/name_m] sounds good too! The others not as much, but I think it works with [name_u]Dean[/name_u]. Otherwise, I’m totally supportive of Hoffman. I gave one of my sons my grandmother’s grandfather’s name as his middle, but it was selected in order to honor my grandmother, not my great-great-grandfather who I never knew.

[name_f]Glad[/name_f] to hear [name_u]Dean[/name_u] [name_m]Paul[/name_m] sounds OK!

So here’s another hitch in the giddyup- I have two relatives- one currently living whose name is [name_m]Paul[/name_m] [name_u]Dean[/name_u] (first and last) and isn’t the one I’m honoring.

[name_u]Dean[/name_u] [name_m]Paul[/name_m] still usable?

I think that’s why I kind of ruled it out.

I think the middle is for whatever you need it to be. If Hoffman is what speaks to you more than [name_m]Paul[/name_m], then I’d go with that. If [name_m]Paul[/name_m] feels more sentimental, I’d use it, even if the flow is “off.”
