Middle name with a hyphen

Hello everyone! I am having a little girl and wanted to know if there are any rules about using a hyphen in a middle name? I have been stuck on the names [name]Juniper[/name] and [name]Lux[/name] for middle names, but since I didn’t give my first daughter 2 middle names I thought perhaps I should hyphenate them so it kinda looks like 1 middle name? I would probably do [name]Juniper[/name]-[name]Lux[/name] rather than [name]Lux[/name]-[name]Juniper[/name]. [name]Do[/name] you think I should just stick to one middle name?

Why not just use two middle names? I’m not sure I see the need for the hyphen. [name]Juniper[/name] [name]Lux[/name] sounds lovely and whimsical in the middle spots! Usually, people might use hyphens with double barrel firsts because they want to make sure people always say the two names together, but with middles, since that’s not what she’s going to be called, there seems no need for it?

Thanks for saying this! I guess I wouldn’t be fooling anyone with the hyphen, it would still be two names and I think it looks better without the hyphen. You don’t think that its odd to have one child with two middles names? I personally don’t know anyone with two middle names  so I’m not sure what to think.

[name]Juniper[/name] [name]Lux[/name] is a great set of middle names. [name]Don[/name]'t even worry about using both (I don’t like the hyphen personally) when your older child only has one. It’s not a big deal. Go for it!

I agree with the others–[name]Juniper[/name] [name]Lux[/name] is a great MN pair, and I wouldn’t be concerned about the 1-vs-2 mns thing. I know several families who have some children with one MN and some with two. I don’t think it really causes a big problem. I agree with the pp, as well, that there really seems to be no need for the hyphen if it’s a MN–if it’s an established double-barrel, something like [name]Anne[/name]-[name]Sophie[/name] that the pronunciation changes because of the hyphen (in French, [name]Anne[/name]-[name]Sophie[/name] is an-so-[name]FEE[/name], as opposed to [name]ANN[/name] SOH-fee), then I would keep the hyphen, but with [name]Juniper[/name] and [name]Lux[/name], I think [FN] [name]Juniper[/name] [name]Lux[/name] is lovely.

Good luck!

Know a lot of people with a hyphened middle name (especially girls using [name]Marie[/name]-______) which isn’t uncommon in [name]France[/name]. I know a lot of ______ [name]Marie[/name]-[name]Charlotte[/name]'s, I also know a [name]Marie[/name]-[name]Edith[/name] and several [name]Anne[/name]-[name]Marie[/name]'s. I’m personally not fond of either of your names, but I’d say they go better without the hyphen, just give two middle names.

Thanks so much for the advice everyone! I don’t know why I expected everyone to say to stick to one middle name? I feel so much better now

I love the combo, and definitely use two middles without the hyphen. I have 3 girls, only one of them has two middles. I will be completely honest in saying that it is not a big deal either way, and I have no regrets at all! If anything, I think I would forever feel sad if I had cut one of the middles out!

I think you should use two middle names instead of the hyphen. I have to say, [name]Juniper[/name] and [name]Lux[/name] is a fantastic combo.

I used a hyphen for my daughter’s middles so that the second one didn’t get “lost” on documents & because I liked the look.

It’s [name]Ida[/name]-[name]Simone[/name] (Ee-duh not eye-duh) so it’s not the [name]Marie[/name]-_____ thing.

I think it’s fine to use it or not use it.

I like the idea of hyphenated names when one of them is more a classic like [name]Wallis[/name]-[name]Ann[/name] or [name]Frankie[/name]-[name]Rae[/name] etc I think if you chose not to use a hyphen but always call her [name]Juniper[/name] [name]Lux[/name] as her full name you won’t lose the double name!

I have two middle names and its never caused any major issues. (Except that my second middle name is my mother’s maiden name and sometimes it got confused with my last name. I don’t think that would happen with [name]Juniper[/name] [name]Lux[/name])
I did have to hyphen it on my drivers license (though its not on my birth certificate) because the system couldn’t accommodate two middles but that might be different now.
I love two middle names and am considering it for our future second child since its hard to pick just one I like.

I don’t think it’s a big deal. I have two middle names and my sister only has one and it has never caused any problems between us. Also, because of being the only one with two middle names, I’ve decided that all of my children will have two middle names so it ended up being even cooler for me. Since worrying about your other child is the only reason you are considering hyphenating, I’d say don’t do it. And [name]Juniper[/name] [name]Lux[/name] is beautiful and so cool!

just do two middle names, I got stuck with Louis-Ramone as a middle name instead of [name_m]Louis[/name_m] [name_m]Ramone[/name_m] making my inital’s LLT instead of LLRT

I guess I’m the odd man out, i would totally use the hyphen for a double barrel MN so they’d only have one middle initial. I think it would be a pain to have two middle initials

This thread is 12 years old, Im fairly certain this baby has been named by now.

:laughing::laughing::laughing:

I didn’t even see that!!
