Middle or Double-Barrel Name for Rune

So, last time I was pregnant, the name we chose for our son came from posting on one of these threads. It was tremendously helpful and every time I think of his name, it makes me happy. So I am hoping you can help me this time. We are already set on a girl name.

We have a last name that is one syllable. I am hoping that if we have a boy, we can have a first name as [name_m]Rune[/name_m] (English pronouncation, ROON; if the Scandinavian pronouncation ROON-eh pops out then fine by me). This has a lot of personal significance and family meaning. But as a stand-alone name, it clashes with our last name a bit.

Any ideas for a middle-name-that-would-become a double barreled name ([name_m]Rune[/name_m] XXXX), A way to double-barrel [name_m]Rune[/name_m] ([name_m]Rune[/name_m]-xxx or Xxxx-[name_m]Rune[/name_m]), or other ideas?

I liked, but hubby isn’t keen on, [name_m]Rune[/name_m] [name_u]Lee[/name_u] and [name_m]Rune[/name_m] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m].

[name_m]Rune[/name_m] [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]
[name_m]Rune[/name_m] [name_u]Ellis[/name_u]
[name_m]Rune[/name_m] [name_m]Felix[/name_m]
[name_m]Rune[/name_m] [name_m]Milo[/name_m]
[name_m]Rune[/name_m] [name_m]Atticus[/name_m]
[name_m]Rune[/name_m] [name_m]Oscar[/name_m]

Although since [name_m]Rune[/name_m] is one syllable, maybe something like
[name_u]Logan[/name_u]-[name_m]Rune[/name_m]
[name_u]Freddie[/name_u]-[name_m]Rune[/name_m]
[name_m]Lucas[/name_m]-[name_m]Rune[/name_m]
[name_m]Oscar[/name_m]-[name_m]Rune[/name_m]
[name_u]Arlo[/name_u]-[name_m]Rune[/name_m]
[name_u]Charlie[/name_u] -[name_m]Rune[/name_m]

Not sure if these are any good…

@greyblue, these are PERFECT!

Some we can’t use because family already has those names. [name_m]Rune[/name_m]-[name_u]Ellis[/name_u] and [name_u]Arlo[/name_u]-[name_m]Rune[/name_m] (even [name_m]Rune[/name_m]-[name_u]Arlo[/name_u]!) would fit in well.

Totally going on my list. SOOOO helpful!

I also think [name_m]Rune[/name_m]-[name_m]Allen[/name_m], along the lines of [name_m]Rune[/name_m]-[name_u]Ellis[/name_u], may work. I like the vowel sound following I think. Hmmm…

Something to be consider, and it may be where I live, but the second name in double barrelled names eventually gets dropped to only the first name as the child gets older. Keeping this in mind, I would be sure that the first name chosen sounds nice with your last name so may want it to have two syllables.

[name_m]Rune[/name_m] is a great name. It’s on my own short list (Rune Ambrose being my current favourite combo). I love both the English and Scandinavian pronunciations, and the “secret, mystery, magic sign” meaning is just divine. A good, strong, magical name.

I’m not much a fan of hyphenated names (the names tend to compete with each other, rather than flow nicely together, for me), so if the ‘double-barrel’ you’d like, I’d definitely urge you to leave out the hyphen, and call him by his first and middle. That said, that middle will likely get dropped sooner or later (as might the second part of the hyphenated first name) as he gets older and wants to streamline his name a little more for ease or professionalism, or to go by more of a ‘nickname’ in just [name_m]Rune[/name_m]. So I think if you really don’t like [name_m]Rune[/name_m] with your surname, it may not be your best bet. Personally, I think unless your surname has similar sounds in it, [name_m]Rune[/name_m] Last(name) could work - I find many single syllable first and last names to sound great…good, strong and classy.

[name_m]Rune[/name_m]-[name_u]Ellis[/name_u] isn’t too bad for a hyphenated name, though I do think it runs together quite a bit, giving it quite a prominent [name_f]NELL[/name_f] sound, which I’m not liking so much. Similarly, [name_m]Rune[/name_m]-[name_m]Allen[/name_m] runs together with a NALL sound.

Of the names you’ve listed, I like [name_m]Rune[/name_m] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] best. There are many names along the lines of [name_m]Alexander[/name_m]'s style that perhaps you AND your husband really like, such as [name_m]Rune[/name_m] [name_m]Harrison[/name_m], [name_m]Rune[/name_m] [name_m]Callum[/name_m] or [name_m]Rune[/name_m] [name_m]Oliver[/name_m].

These are all very excellent points! And I appreciate the feedback.

If we go with the Scandinavian pronunciation and drop a middle name, it doesn’t sound terrible. But there are near-matching consonant names that without another syllable, would make it a bit tough for [name_m]Rune[/name_m] to pair solely with our last name.

[name_u]Ever[/name_u] since reading the Babysitter’s Club books and the brother named [name_m]David[/name_m] [name_u]Michael[/name_u], I have fallen in love with double-barrelled names but you are right in that I shouldn’t force it and maybe ask hubby to revisit [name_m]Alexander[/name_m].

Thanks so much

What about

[name_m]Archie[/name_m]-[name_m]Rune[/name_m]?
[name_u]Elliot[/name_u]-[name_m]Rune[/name_m]?
[name_m]Rune[/name_m]-[name_m]Killian[/name_m]? or Killiam [name_m]Rune[/name_m]?
[name_m]Madox[/name_m]-[name_m]Rune[/name_m]?
[name_u]Taylor[/name_u]-[name_m]Rune[/name_m]?
[name_u]Ember[/name_u] [name_m]Rune[/name_m]?

[name_m]Rune[/name_m] [name_u]Michael[/name_u]
[name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Rune[/name_m]

I would have never thought of [name_u]Ember[/name_u] @sabahk, I will definitely share the list with hubby! [name_m]Rune[/name_m]-[name_m]Killian[/name_m] has such a nice flow, and I like playing with [name_m]Rune[/name_m]-[name_u]Ember[/name_u] and [name_u]Ember[/name_u]-[name_m]Rune[/name_m].

@notcinnamon, I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_u]Michael[/name_u] but it is my other son’s middle name and so 1.) didn’t think of using it, and 2. hubby may have some reservations about it. But the flow feels wonderful. We might have to consider it.

Unfortunately there is a cousin [name_u]James[/name_u], but [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Rune[/name_m] is delightful as well.

I am always so overwhelmed with all the help I have received over the years naming my kiddos. This is the best forum, I swear. This is so special, I thank everyone <3<3<3

My personal favourite is [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] [name_m]Rune[/name_m].

[name_m]Rune[/name_m] [name_m]Wyatt[/name_m]

I love [name_m]Rune[/name_m]!

Some more ideas…
[name_m]Rune[/name_m] [name_m]Malakai[/name_m] / [name_m]Malachy[/name_m]
[name_m]Rune[/name_m] [name_u]Micah[/name_u] / [name_u]Micah[/name_u] [name_m]Rune[/name_m]
[name_u]Owen[/name_u] [name_m]Rune[/name_m]
[name_m]Bowen[/name_m] [name_m]Rune[/name_m]
[name_m]Rune[/name_m] [name_m]Isaiah[/name_m]
[name_m]Rune[/name_m] [name_u]Everett[/name_u] / [name_u]Everett[/name_u] [name_m]Rune[/name_m]
[name_m]Beckett[/name_m] [name_m]Rune[/name_m]
[name_m]Rune[/name_m] [name_u]Cade[/name_u]
[name_u]Camden[/name_u] [name_m]Rune[/name_m]

I think we have just decided to give this baby two middle names, to me it helps the flow. We have asked some confidants and they seem to think the single syllable last name won’t be an issue. But many of the names you provided are still in the running and we seriously appreciate it!

So are you looking for two middle names to go with the first name [name_m]Rune[/name_m] or just three names in general with [name_m]Rune[/name_m] in there somewhere?

Regardless, here are some combination possibilities with three names:

[name_m]Rune[/name_m] [name_m]Daniel[/name_m] [name_m]Wilder[/name_m]
[name_m]Evander[/name_m] [name_m]Rune[/name_m] [name_m]Ernest[/name_m]
[name_m]Rune[/name_m] [name_m]Anderson[/name_m] [name_m]Malachi[/name_m]
[name_m]Rune[/name_m] [name_m]Benedict[/name_m] [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] / [name_m]Benedict[/name_m] [name_m]Rune[/name_m] [name_m]Matthew[/name_m]
[name_m]Rune[/name_m] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] [name_u]August[/name_u] / [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] [name_m]Rune[/name_m] [name_u]August[/name_u]

For what it’s worth, and without knowing your surname, I think the concern over a single syllable FN and LN is much less important in real life. There are many, many people whose names fit into that criteria and if you love the name then it shouldn’t be a deal breaker.

Slight rant over . . . [name_m]Rune[/name_m] is a wonderful choice. I love how he’s handsome and strong but gentle and boyish at the same time. I imagine the name to be a dusty purple colour, like a grape.

[name_m]Rune[/name_m] [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] came to mind after reading your post - [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] shares the same soft masculinity - and [name_m]Rune[/name_m] [name_u]Elliott[/name_u], [name_m]Rune[/name_m] [name_m]Balthazar[/name_m], [name_m]Rune[/name_m] [name_m]Christopher[/name_m], and [name_m]Rune[/name_m] [name_m]Timothy[/name_m] also sprang to mind.

I just wanted to chime in and say that 99% of the time in everyday life, your son will probably be called by his first name only. The only times when we’re addressed as “FirstName LastName” is when teachers call out attendance, when we’re called to go in to the doctor’s office, or other similar situations, right? It’s pretty rare.

So I wouldn’t worry too much about the sound of [name_m]Rune[/name_m] LastName. If you want to give him a middle name, I’d think about something that has significance for you AND sounds nice, not just something there to fill out [name_m]Rune[/name_m].

And btw, [name_m]Rune[/name_m] is a great choice for a name! I love it.

[name_m]Rune[/name_m] [name_u]Brook[/name_u]

You are so right! I am slowly getting more used to it, and slowly falling more and more in love with the name. And all the suggestions have been top-notch. Nameberry forum-goers are my kind of people for sure
