Miles/Myles/Milo - how popular is Miles, really?

I’m due on [name_u]November[/name_u] 1st (or any minute now really…). Our top boy name is [name_m]Miles[/name_m], but I’ve started worrying that it might be too trendy given that not only is [name_m]Miles[/name_m] growing in popularity, but also [name_m]Myles[/name_m] and [name_m]Milo[/name_m].

So… is [name_m]Miles[/name_m]/[name_m]Myles[/name_m]/[name_m]Milo[/name_m] too trendy or popular?

Does anyone know how to figure out what the true ranking is if you combine [name_m]Miles[/name_m], [name_m]Myles[/name_m], and [name_m]Milo[/name_m]?

I don’t think it’s too popular. The only [name_m]Miles[/name_m] I know is almost 20, so that doesn’t even count. It’s a handsome name. [name_m]Milo[/name_m] is handsome and fun and bouncy.

As for popularity combining spellings:

Country wide – [name_m]Miles[/name_m] (#111) had 3,229 births, [name_m]Myles[/name_m] (#222) had 1,608 births, and [name_m]Milo[/name_m] (#330) had 946 births. A total of 5,783 which isn’t too bad.

In your state – None of those names rank in the top 100 in your state.

So no, I don’t think any of them are too popular or to trendy.

Thank you so much for the analysis! And looking into the popularity in [name_u]Tennessee[/name_u]… brilliant! I’m not sure where to do that. I’m name-crazy enough I should know these things by now. I appreciate the help.

You can go to ssa.gov and search for popular baby names. There’s a place where you can select your state for popularity rankings.

[name_m]Miles[/name_m] is one of my top names. I knew two [name_m]Miles[/name_m] - 1 in high school and 1 in college (I’m 30.). I was really starting to fall in love with [name_m]Miles[/name_m]/[name_m]Milo[/name_m] but my two year old daughter’s new “best friend” is a [name_m]Miles[/name_m]! So now I’m not sure what to do…

But honestly, I think that’s a total coincidence and does not reflect true popularity of the name. I still don’t think it’s very popular. I say go for it.

Thanks for your feedback! I’m feeling much more positive about it with the comments here.

I see we have similar tastes! [name_u]Dean[/name_u] is actually my #2 name, and I love [name_u]Evan[/name_u] (close to [name_m]Ewan[/name_m]…).

For girls, I also love [name_f]Margot[/name_f] (must have the t!), [name_f]Carys[/name_f], [name_f]Maeve[/name_f], and [name_f]Greta[/name_f], though unfortunately my husband has vetoed all of them. He likes [name_f]Elise[/name_f], which I see is also in your list! But alas, I cannot come around to it.

[name_m]Milo[/name_m] is my number one boy’s choice (though I’m still a couple years away from naming any babies) and I can’t speak for anywhere else but it’s not in the top 100 in the Midwest.

I know a girl who just had a boy she named [name_m]Myles[/name_m] and I know a 6 year old with that as his middle name. I don’t think it’s overly popular. Maybe it’s along the lines of [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m]? Not unheard of, but not nearly popular either.

To answer the question another way, 1.6 boys named [name_m]Miles[/name_m] per 1,000 baby boys born in 2012. Great name, btw, very old school cool.

I have actually never met a single [name_m]Miles[/name_m]/[name_m]Myles[/name_m]/[name_m]Milo[/name_m], but I absolutely adore [name_m]Miles[/name_m] nn [name_m]Milo[/name_m]. I think it’s gorgeous!

This is all very encouraging! Thank you all for talking me off the ledge at 38 weeks pregnant.

I love [name_m]Miles[/name_m]. My husband and I would definitely be using it if we hadn’t already named our dog that before we thought much about kids. Honestly, my husband still thinks we should use it! I do hear it every now because and then but it is not very common. [name_m]Milo[/name_m] is also nice but I prefer [name_m]Miles[/name_m] over both [name_m]Milo[/name_m] and [name_m]Myles[/name_m].

I know two [name_m]Miles[/name_m]’. One is in his twenties, and the other is due to be born in [name_u]January[/name_u], one of my friend is having a boy and they’re naming him that.
