Miller, Marshall or Murray?

I started thinking about [name_m]Miller[/name_m] today, mainly because my hometown was first established as a mill in the early 1800s, I thought it might be a nice connection. But is it too popular for little girls now? [name_u]Murray[/name_u] is also on my mind, as the [name_u]Murray[/name_u] [name_u]River[/name_u] is somewhere I played as a child and swam. [name_m]Marshall[/name_m] reminds me of the overgrowth on the water, the willows, the marshes etc.

If I use one of the three, it’ll be in honour of my father [name_u]Michael[/name_u], not just because it starts with an M; but also because he’s very patriotic and proud of where we came from.

Thoughts on these names, Berries?

[name_m]Miller[/name_m] is my favorite of the three, incredibly handsome. I’ve never heard of it being used on girls before. I see a dark haired boy in a flannel shirt. He wears his short hair combed with a little spike across the front. He’s rather quiet, he doesn’t talk much and he’s got a sweet closed-mouth smile with a dimple on his left cheek.

My next favorite is [name_m]Marshall[/name_m], I do really like it. In my head I picture a tall-for-his-age light brown/dirty blonde haired kid. It’s very unruly hair and it comes down to the middle of his eyebrows. He’s always wearing rolled up jeans, and he loves to go without shoes and a shirt, but when he does wear those it’s converse sneakers and a striped t-shirt. He’s got deep blue eyes and he brags about how he just lost one of his teeth on his latest adventure.

I love the looks of [name_u]Murray[/name_u], but not so much the sound of the second syllable. The nickname Murs/Murrs around the house would be a plus. Regardless, I see a little boy who’s popular among his friends, but still strives to include the people who his friends bully. He’s got the biggest, sweetest brown eyes you’ve ever seen and curly caramel brown hair. He always jokes around is known for picking people’s spirits up when they’re down.

I like that each one has personal meaning for you!

[name_m]Marshall[/name_m] is my favorite out of them all. [name_m]Miller[/name_m] is SUCH a common last name in the U.S., I feel like I’ve known tens of people with it. And for [name_u]Murray[/name_u], I don’t like the ‘Murr’ at the beginning.

I love [name_u]Murray[/name_u]!

I like both [name_u]Murray[/name_u] and [name_m]Marshall[/name_m]. They would be my picks.

My DH has suggested [name_u]Murray[/name_u] to me a couple of times during our 'what about insert name here? conversations.

Of the three, I like [name_m]Miller[/name_m] best. I find both [name_u]Murray[/name_u] and [name_m]Marshall[/name_m] to be incredibly dated and unless they were in direct honor of someone special I definitely think there are nicer options. [name_m]Miller[/name_m] is a little trendy being a surname used as a first (I had no idea is was becoming popular on girls…), but it’s got that subtle meaning to you and your history as well as your father and, I believe, would work best of the three on a younger person today.

[name_m]Miller[/name_m] is too much of a last name to me. Names like [name_m]Smith[/name_m], [name_m]Miller[/name_m], and [name_m]Baker[/name_m] as first names tend to make it sound like the name is backwards. I like [name_u]Murray[/name_u] and [name_m]Marshall[/name_m] though. [name_m]Marshall[/name_m] would be my first choice, followed by [name_u]Murray[/name_u] if you’re looking for something hipster.

I have never heard of [name_m]Miller[/name_m] being used as a girl’s name. I would not let that bother me. I would use [name_u]Tegan[/name_u], [name_u]Addison[/name_u], [name_u]Roan[/name_u], and [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] in a heart beat; and [name_u]Tegan[/name_u] and [name_u]Addison[/name_u], as others would say, went to the girls, quite a while ago. [name_u]Tegan[/name_u] long enough that Berries have even suggested I not use [name_u]Tegan[/name_u] for a boy (I should ask again, it has been a while). I love it for a girl but adore it for a boy. They are still boy’s names. The only [name_u]Addison[/name_u] I know is a boy. Have never actually met a [name_u]Tegan[/name_u], [name_u]Roan[/name_u] (or [name_u]Rowan[/name_u]), and [name_u]Emerson[/name_u].

My favorite out of the three would be [name_m]Marshall[/name_m]. A long distant second would be [name_m]Miller[/name_m].

I like all three.

[name_m]Miller[/name_m] seems more modern and on trend. I knew a vivacious little boy named [name_m]Marshall[/name_m], so I think its a great choice. I’ve always though [name_u]Murray[/name_u] was kind of cute, but is my least favorite of the three.

Personally, I’d go with [name_m]Miller[/name_m] probably… maybe [name_m]Marshall[/name_m]!

I think [name_u]Murray[/name_u] is ripe for revival! I also like that it has the most direct name connection for you.

NB: I may be biased since my grandfather was named [name_u]Murray[/name_u] and he was a charming fellow

My favourite out of the three soundwise would be [name_m]Miller[/name_m], and I love @dewdropsandroses’ imagery for a boy with the name! I also couldn’t picture it on a girl, so if that’s the only thing that’s holding you back, I wouldn’t worry.

Thanks y’all for your input and all your lovely imagery. My boyfriend and I have decided we want to use [name_u]Logan[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u] M…, the surname would be similar in sound to [name_m]Clinton[/name_m]. Which do you think works best or should I stick to [name_u]Michael[/name_u]? We aren’t TTC any time soon.

I like [name_u]Murray[/name_u] and [name_m]Marshall[/name_m]

These three are all lovely names!

[name_m]Miller[/name_m] to me has a cowboy, pioneer sound which is appealing.

[name_m]Marshall[/name_m] is strong (a bit of cowboy feel to it too), plus I love [name_u]Marsh[/name_u] with its evocations of cool, boggy places.

[name_u]Murray[/name_u] I love, though it does sound a bit more like a grown man than a little boy. Still, a little [name_u]Murray[/name_u] would be a cute boy.

Great taste!

Which would you rather be named if you were a boy? I’d go for [name_u]Marsh[/name_u]/[name_m]Marshall[/name_m].

[name_m]Marshall[/name_m] has become over-popular in my circles, so I’d personally avoid it, though I like its sound. [name_u]Murray[/name_u] is so charming, but I’m worried it will sound dated and overly trendy in a few years, since it has a hipster ring to it. Overall [name_m]Miller[/name_m] is my favorite - it’s classic and familiar, but uncommon to see as a given name. Sounds quite composed, yet dashing.

I’m assuming that by saying your surname is like [name_m]Clinton[/name_m], there’s a short i (ih) sound in it? If so, [name_m]Miller[/name_m] has the same sound & may not work w/the surname as well. Neither [name_m]Marshall[/name_m] nor [name_u]Murray[/name_u] have the (ih) sound, so there’s no repetition.

Of the three names, I like [name_m]Marshall[/name_m] the best, [name_m]Miller[/name_m] second, & [name_u]Murray[/name_u] last.

Good luck!

I love the idea of [name_m]Miller[/name_m]. I’m fairly partial to last names as first names and the sentimental ties you have to it is very sweet
I like [name_m]Marshall[/name_m] but it does Pop to me. My least favourite is [name_u]Murray[/name_u]. It just seems flat, and old. It’s bound to be shortened to Murs

[name_m]Marshall[/name_m] is my favorite
