A bit of a random thread here: I just found out that my great grandfather’s name was Miro [name]Alpha[/name] (surname). I’m not sure of his date of birth, but my grandfather was born in 1900, so that would put his father being born sometime in the mid/late 1800s.
It seems a fairly unusual name to me, particularly for that time. According to Nameberry, Miro is a boy’s name honouring the Spanish artist [name]Joan[/name] Miro, but he was born in 1893, so that wouldn’t have been the inspiration for my GGF. Also according to Nameberry, [name]Alpha[/name] is a girl’s name. All very interesting; I’m wondering if any of you onomastic berries have any ideas/comments? I’m quite captivated by it.
In my searches, I found that Miro is Slovanic and mainly used in Finnish and Slavic languages as a diminutive of Miroslav. And a link to the Finnish top 100 in 2007 came up.
I don’t know if that’s right, but in any case, I sort of like it. It has a cool sound.
Also, i don’t see why [name]Alpha[/name] would be a girls name. [name]Alpha[/name] is a Greek letter and used to mean number 1 in other languages, so I don’t see why a letter needs to be girl or boy. I would call it unisex.
English, I think, although possibly Australian, I’ll try to find out for sure. Our surname is very plain ‘anglo’ - no ‘exotic’ influence that I know of.
