Missing M Name?

I realized the other day that I never see [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] or [name_m]Matt[/name_m] on nameberry. I told my husband, who was deeply concerned (not! He is tired of me asking if he’d rather be named [name_m]Percival[/name_m] or Peregrine).

So what’s the deal with [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] and [name_m]Matt[/name_m]? I see [name_m]Mark[/name_m], [name_m]Luke[/name_m], [name_m]John[/name_m], and [name_m]Paul[/name_m].

It’s not the most stunning name, for me personally. I encounter numerous Matt’s & Matthew’s out there, so it’s a bit boring.

I get it, but aren’t [name_f]Emma[/name_f] and [name_f]Ava[/name_f] and [name_m]Luke[/name_m] and [name_f]Stella[/name_f] and [name_u]Madison[/name_u] boring too?

I see quite a bit of [name_m]Mateo[/name_m], which is a more stylish equivalent, I think. [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] is a dad name right now, more than the others you mentioned. Maybe it was more popular than [name_m]Mark[/name_m] etc. forty years ago. I like it, though! It sounds friendly, capable, and stalwart to me.

Like @bjoy said, Matthew is considered a “dad name” now. Names like Emma, Charlotte, William, etc are more of timeless classics, and names like Luke, Stella, and Madison are current & associated with this generation instead.

I think I like Dad names (at least Dad names now, maybe not Dad names years from now). I’ve also known some pretty hunky Matts.

It’s the “thew” sound for me. I just don’t think it’s very pretty. [name_m]Matthias[/name_m] is a bit posh for my taste, but I like the sound so much better.

Hmm, i wonder if it’s because it’s a little lacklustre? Recently overdone? Not quite ready to be dated but cute?

No offense to anyone named [name_m]Matt[/name_m], but every single [name_m]Matt[/name_m] I’ve met in my personal life has been AWFUL! So now I have this association with the name of them being annoying and rude. It also feels very biblical to me. To be fair I wouldn’t use [name_m]Mark[/name_m], [name_m]Luke[/name_m], [name_m]John[/name_m], or [name_m]Paul[/name_m] either. I feel like [name_m]Matt[/name_m] is the most common on that list though so it’s probably just overused at this point.

I actually quite like [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] but I have one in my family and have known so many that I can’t see myself using it as first name so I don’t discuss it. I do like it for a middle name though!

I find the name to be quite warm and friendly!

I do too. Not enough to use or write about usually.

I never see Joshua/Josh either. I think they’re of roughly the same quite specific vintage — classic, but nevertheless a little dated and haven’t been that way long enough to be beginning to feel like a refreshing change on a baby.

I actually like both names, for what it’s worth!

I really like [name_m]Matthew[/name_m], but I get why it’s not more popular on NB - it’s really common, for the adults today.

Matthew is on my list! I love its solid, warm feel. It is common (I know plenty, including some in my own family), but that doesn’t bother me.

This is probably the reason! I also like Joshua.

[name_f]My[/name_f] little nephew is a [name_m]Matthew[/name_m]. I agree we don’t see it enough here! I think there is just a perceived dated quality to it since it was very popular in the 80s and 90s.

No apology needed. Its absence here just struck me.

[name_m]Matthew[/name_m] seems a bit dated and the sound isn’t very pleasant, but [name_m]Matt[/name_m] on a baby is adorable. I also like [name_u]Matty[/name_u] on a boy!

I agree that it feels a bit tired but [name_m]Mark[/name_m] feels more so. :joy::joy:. To me, anyway! I like it but prefer [name_m]Matthias[/name_m] myself… I just don’t love [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] in combos, really. It just looks weird visually to me? Haha.

I love [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] [name_m]Cuthbert[/name_m], but that would be a mouthful!
