What are names that you really love but would never bestow upon your own baby?
[name]Sophie[/name], [name]Gioia[/name], [name]Philippa[/name], [name]Drusilla[/name] ([name]Cinderella[/name]'s stepsister is Drizella), [name]Caroline[/name] & [name]Prudence[/name] for girls.
[name]Philip[/name], [name]Laurence[/name], [name]Neville[/name], [name]Zev[/name], [name]Zed[/name], [name]Quincy[/name], [name]Stephen[/name], [name]Yancey[/name], [name]Marek[/name], [name]Donato[/name]/[name]Donatello[/name], [name]Thor[/name], [name]Apollo[/name] & [name]Otto[/name] for guys.
Too many to count! I love so many classic names like [name]Jane[/name] and [name]Claire[/name], [name]Thomas[/name] and [name]Edward[/name], but they just don’t seem to go with our last name. We’re also both artists, so I’m definitely drawn to more romantic names (although I think [name]Jane[/name] qualifies as romantic in her own way!). Some others that I love but just don’t give me that head-over-heels feeling:
[name]Amelia[/name]”yet I love [name]Adelia[/name], which is a family name
[name]Annabel[/name]”just too much like [name]Isabel[/name] I guess
[name]Anya[/name]”love the way it looks on paper, but the sound just doesn’t work for me
[name]Esme[/name]”I really, really love this name but worry about pronunciation issues
[name]Ina[/name]”also a family name, but with serious teasing possibilities
[name]Beatrice[/name]”like a lot but am in love with [name]Beatrix[/name] (husband won’t hear of it unfortunately!)
[name]Maeve[/name]”LOTS of cool points for [name]Maeve[/name], but not quite feminine enough for me
[name]Caspar[/name]”how can I love [name]Jasper[/name] so much, but not [name]Caspar[/name]?
[name]Franklin[/name]”almost a favorite…can’t put my finger on what’s holding me back
[name]Julius[/name]”I love saying [name]Julius[/name], but for some reason can’t picture it on my own child
[name]Paolo[/name]”a little too Italian for the U.S., I think. But it has so much energy!
[name]Thaddeus[/name]”love [name]Thaddeus[/name] but hate the inevitable nn [name]Thad[/name]
Girls:
[name]Cecily[/name] - I think this is my very fave name, but doesn’t go with my last name [name]Chesney[/name] very well.
[name]Cecilia[/name] - When I think about it, I always realize I love [name]Cecily[/name] more. Then I feel sad. But [name]Cecilia[/name] would go with our last name and was my husband’s grandmother’s name. [name]Cecilia[/name] [name]Jane[/name] and [name]Cecilia[/name] [name]Pearl[/name] are so pretty!
[name]Cameron[/name] (for a girl) - this is so pretty, but I don’t go for unisex names.
[name]Elaine[/name] - I love this name but it is not in style. Come back, [name]Elaine[/name]! It will after a while.
[name]Honor[/name] - this is so pretty, but I think I would feel awkward if it were my own name so I wouldn’t want to bestow it on someone else!
[name]Beatrice[/name] - love the long name, hate bees (am allergic) so hate [name]Bea[/name].
[name]Flora[/name] - rhymes with my daughter’s name [name]Laura[/name]. Ditto for all other names that sound too much like [name]Laura[/name] including [name]Clara[/name] which is another possible very fave name. [name]Both[/name] [name]Flora[/name] and [name]Clara[/name] are family names. So is [name]Beatrice[/name].
[name]Maeve[/name] - my husband hates it. I asked him to rate it, 10 being wonderful and 1 being the very worst and he gave it a 2. I love it as a middle name.
[name]Lillian[/name] - My grandmother’s name. Too popular. Too bad.
[name]Jane[/name] - Was taken by my cousin for her little girl six years before we had our daughter.
[name]Rebecca[/name] - Was taken by my sister for her daughter’s middle name. But we got [name]Elizabeth[/name] which I love even more!
[name]Emma[/name] - too popular. [name]Love[/name] it so much, you don’t even know. And it’s my husband’s great grandmother’s name. Maybe it’s not so popular in L.A.
Boys:
[name]Archie[/name] - doesn’t go with [name]Chesney[/name]
[name]Kenneth[/name] - too much like [name]Kenny[/name] [name]Chesney[/name]
[name]Frank[/name] - love the name, but know someone awful whose name is [name]Frank[/name].
[name]Dashiell[/name] - don’t like with last name, husband would hate it.
[name]August[/name] - quite sure husband would hate it.
[name]Nicholas[/name] - I love this name so much! First it was too popular and now it’s sliding out of fashion. [name]Love[/name] [name]Nick[/name], [name]Cole[/name], and [name]Colin[/name]. And it’s Greek. Oh, well, I think I would just use it even though it’s not so stylish because it is so wonderful.
As I’ve mentioned before, I dearly love the name [name]Ernestine[/name] no matter what anyone else thinks! But I have mixed feelings about it because, well, it’s [name]Ernestine[/name]. [name]Even[/name] my grandmother isn’t fond of it, and it’s her name! I’ve resigned myself to using it as a middle (I don’t want my daughter to hate me!). My grandmother was called “Teeny” by her siblings, and I think that’s precious!
Other names I really like but would never use (mostly because, while I think they’re pretty darned cool, they’re just a bit too far out for comfort) are: [name]Zara[/name], [name]Easter[/name], [name]Sonnet[/name] and [name]Ilse[/name]. For boys, [name]Baptiste[/name] and [name]Endymion[/name].
There are many many names I love that I would never use for my child.
For girls :
Lindita : one of my favourites, it is not a nickname for [name_f]Linda[/name_f] but an Albanian name which means The day is born. The only problem with Lindita is the face that it reminds me of a girl with black hair or even brown, my daughter is blonde though. However I still love it.
[name_f]Irma[/name_f] : originally a Germanic nickname for names starting with ermen- (universal in Ancient Germanic if I remember well) but it can stand as a first name.
Evangelie : I love the [name_m]French[/name_m] pronunciation but the same spelling is pronounced very differently in Germany
[name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] : I really like Ancient names, especially this one as pronounced in Greek though. My problem is again the [name_m]German[/name_m] hard pronunciation.
For boys :
[name_m]Valentino[/name_m] : I should admit that it is my favourite name. I would never use a nickname of it because I love the sound. But I can’t imagine a boy with blonde hair and blue eyes named [name_m]Valentino[/name_m], especially in Germany.
Girls:
[name_u]Aspen[/name_u]- Beautiful nature name, but too sharp when you say it.
[name_f]Amber[/name_f]- [name_u]LOVE[/name_u], but very common
[name_f]Brielle[/name_f]- So pretty, but very close to brail
[name_u]Kendall[/name_u]- [name_u]Love[/name_u], but a little masculine , same with [name_f]Mckenna[/name_f], which I also like.
[name_f]Sadie[/name_f]- Really like it as an adult, but I remember as a kid I thought it was a horrible name.
Aurelia
Bindi
[name_f]Charlene[/name_f]
Eden
Evangeline
Ireland
Boys:
[name_m]Cane[/name_m]- [name_u]Love[/name_u] it, but Canes Bible story is terrible.
[name_m]Keith[/name_m]- family name and I like it, my husband doesn’t like, [name_m]Keith[/name_m] or [name_m]Heath[/name_m].
I guess only my guilty pleasure names! For boys I love but would never use: [name_m]Mowgli[/name_m], [name_u]Haley[/name_u], [name_u]River[/name_u], [name_m]Spyro[/name_m], [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u]. And for girls: [name_f]Shanti[/name_f], [name_f]Lilo[/name_f], [name_u]Rain[/name_u], [name_f]Arrietty[/name_f] and [name_u]Leoni[/name_u] but I really do love but would never use them.
[name_f]Esmeralda[/name_f]. It’s SUCH a beautiful name, and [name_f]Esme[/name_f] could be the nn! I can’t get past [name_m]Victor[/name_m] [name_m]Hugo[/name_m], though.
[name_f]Saoirse[/name_f]
[name_f]Niamh[/name_f]
[name_f]Andromeda[/name_f]
[name_f]Sonora[/name_f]
[name_u]Vesper[/name_u]
[name_u]Juniper[/name_u]
[name_f]Vada[/name_f]
