[name_u]Baby[/name_u] Girl is going to be with us any day now (due date 7/3) and we have (with great reluctance) begun to reveal her name to close family and friends. This is mostly due to incessant nagging and my mother’s inability to stop telling people we’re naming her [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] (a name that never even made our short list).
Her name is [name_f]Rosaline[/name_f]. [name_f]Rosaline[/name_f] [name_f]Joy[/name_f] (last name sounds like Richter).
We’re pronouncing it [name_f]Rose[/name_f]-uh-leen. A combo of [name_f]Rose[/name_f] and [name_f]Eileen[/name_f]/[name_f]Aline[/name_f] (which are family names to honor both sides)
We are getting a TON of negative feedback though on the names pronouncability and spelling. What do you berries think? Am I condemning my daughter?
Definitely not! The only issue I could see is some may pronounce it [name_f]Ros[/name_f]-a-line instead of [name_f]Rose[/name_f]-uh-leen. I think of [name_f]Rosaline[/name_f] from [name_m]Romeo[/name_m] and [name_f]Juliet[/name_f].
It’s lovely! My first instinct was to pronounce it [name_f]Roz[/name_f]-a-line, but [name_f]Rose[/name_f]-uh-leen is great, too. As long as you’re ok ignoring or correcting incorrect pronunciation you should be fine.
[name_f]Edit[/name_f] to add: if the pronunciation issues do bother you, you could consider using the spelling [name_f]Rosaleen[/name_f].
Same here. I’ve always pronounced it [name_f]Rose[/name_f]-uh-line because that’s how they said it in the play. It’s an easy correction to make though, since a lot of -line names are/can be pronounced “line”, like [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] and [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f]. [name_f]Rosaline[/name_f] is a beautiful name though, don’t worry about other people’s comments! It’s your child, not your mother’s; name her what you like.
[name_m]Don[/name_m]'t doubt yourself. Dealing with ths occasional mispronounciation is easy and even common names get spelled incorrectly and often have multiple spellings ([name_f]Sara[/name_f]/[name_f]Sarah[/name_f]:[name_f]Katherine[/name_f]/[name_f]Catherine[/name_f]/[name_f]Kathryn[/name_f] etc).
It’s a stunning name! I think you will have prn issues, though. My first thought was [name_f]Rose[/name_f] uh line. However, just ignore the naysayers. You have chosen a gorgeous, underused name. You shouldn’t be bullied into their choice.
It is a beautiful name. I would have pronounced it [name_f]Rose[/name_f] el line but I much prefer your way. [name_m]Just[/name_m] correct people and it’ll be no big deal.
Ignore the nay sayers. One of the major fall backs of revealing the name before she arrives. Before the baby is named everyone thinks they can say what ever they want, after - everyone will just love her and her name.
[name_f]Rosaline[/name_f] is beautiful and for me is quite obviously [name_f]Rose[/name_f]-uh-leen. [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t doubt yourself or pay attention to what others say (I know it’s hard), I’m pretty sure that when your daughter arrives all of the negativity surrounding her name will disappear! Stick with your beautiful name choice!
Definitely not. [name_f]Rosaline[/name_f] is a beautiful choice and I actually pronounce it the way you do too. I have [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] on my short list -another variant with same dilemma over pronunciation issue, so I can empathise. Personally I think it’s not a big deal though. You may have to correct people from time to time, but it’s a little trouble only and definitely not worth giving up a name as lovely as [name_f]Rosaline[/name_f].
I am with everyone else here. I think [name_f]Rosaline[/name_f] is a most gorgeous name! And I pronounced it right on the first try too. I like this spelling best of any I can think off, yes you may have to correct people on the spelling/pronunciation sometimes, but that is how it is with so many names.
All the best with your soon to be born baby girl!
[name_f]Rosaline[/name_f] is absolutely beautiful. I’m honestly shocked you’re getting such negative feedback from family and such. I pronounced it exactly how you said it would be pronounced while reading your post. I think with any names that end in “line” you will get some mispronunciatipns, but those who know and love her will get it right after you correct them just once. My daughter is named [name_f]Lyra[/name_f], which we pronounce Lie-Ruh, and we get many [name_u]Lee[/name_u]-Ruh attempts, but we just correct and move on. We still love her name anyway.
It’s okay, there might be slight pronunciation problems (again, first instinct was to say [name_f]Roz[/name_f]-a-line) but [name_f]Rose[/name_f]-ah-leen is gorgeous and a great name! [name_m]Even[/name_m] if there are problems, I don’t think it’s so big of a deal that you should reconsider you daughter’s name, even at so late a date. Like another berry said, almost every name is going to be mispronounced at some point in its owner’s life!
Most names that end in -line have two possible pronunciations. I think most people would realize that and just remember which was the correct one. I don’t think it’s a problem unless it bothers you.
Wow, [name_f]Rosaline[/name_f] [name_f]Joy[/name_f] is such a beautiful name!! I can’t believe anyone would say anything negative about it, I’m in love with it! As other people have said, it sometimes might be pronounced wrong but that’s easily fixed, it shouldn’t be much of a problem. Congrats on the baby girl
Thanks Berries! You’ve restored my feeling of security. I have no issue correcting the prn of her name, so no issues there! Now I just have to wait another week or so for her to make her grand arrival!
