I’ve been aware for a long time that I prefer short to medium length names. (I think this is quite uncommon as a berry… Anyways!) Sometimes this results in nick-namey names like [name_f]Minnie[/name_f], sometimes in “full names” like [name_f]Alice[/name_f].
My question is, would it be okay to mix nick-namey names and “full names” in a sib set?
Would it be fine to have brothers [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] and [name_m]Archie[/name_m], instead of [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] and [name_m]Archibald[/name_m]/[name_u]Olly[/name_u] and [name_m]Archie[/name_m]?
Or sisters [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] and [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]?
[name_f]TIA[/name_f]!
I think the examples you’ve given are fine and sound good. I know what you mean though, and for me personally it would be irksome! I would do longer names with nicknames, but I’m a bit ocd about things like that.
I think it depends on the names. [name_m]Archie[/name_m] is a lot more popular than [name_m]Archibald[/name_m] (I think) and does feel like it’s own name. So do [name_u]Charlie[/name_u], [name_u]Alfie[/name_u], [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], [name_f]Molly[/name_f], etc., however, there are nicknames that, to me, are just nicknames, that I find odd as a full name, especially when put next to a longer name. So [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] & [name_m]Archie[/name_m] or [name_f]Rose[/name_f] & [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] or [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] & [name_f]Molly[/name_f] all sound fine to me, while [name_m]Tommy[/name_m] & [name_m]Charles[/name_m] or [name_f]Vivi[/name_f] & [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] or [name_u]Bobby[/name_u] & [name_f]Rebecca[/name_f] all feel a bit mismatched.
I think it’s probably fine. I very rarely prefer a nn/diminutive to an actual “whole name”, but, at the same time, I have names as short as [name_f]Eva[/name_f] and as long as [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] and [name_f]Carolina[/name_f]. And then I have full names that look long but sound short ([name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_m]Dashiell[/name_m]), and short-and-sweet diminutives ([name_m]Jack[/name_m], [name_f]Tess[/name_f]). So if I can have a [name_m]Jack[/name_m] and a [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], or a [name_f]Tess[/name_f] and a [name_f]Carolina[/name_f], I think you could easily have an [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] and an [name_m]Archie[/name_m]! Oddly enough, can I say how much I love [name_m]Archibald[/name_m]? It’s so dorky and old man-ish, but I think meeting a little [name_m]Archibald[/name_m] would be SO cool! I’m guessing you’re not of the same persuasion, but ah, well. I would love to meet an [name_m]Archibald[/name_m]. lol. Much like my love of [name_f]Agnes[/name_f], I suppose!
I have this problem, also, and I think it’s something you need to decide for yourself. Personally, it would annoy me, so I’ve come to terms with the fact that some names I will just never use because I like the nn but not the full name.
Thank you guys!
@opheliaflora I agree that some nicknames seem more established than others, and I usually learn towards the more established ones. Like you say, I wouldn’t use something like [name_f]Vivi[/name_f] on it’s own.
@ashthedreamer I worry about long/short names in a sibset too! I like some 1 syllable names ([name_f]Joy[/name_f], [name_f]Faye[/name_f], [name_m]Jack[/name_m] etc.) and I don’t know how I’d feel mixing a single syllable name with something long like [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] (which I also like) in a sib set. I guess it’s probably fine though, I’m probably overly concerned lol (For the record, I love [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]!)
I think it’s fine as long as the names are similar in length. I’d be far less likely to notice, for example, [name_f]Rosie[/name_f], [name_f]Alice[/name_f], and [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] than I would [name_f]Rosie[/name_f], [name_f]Octavia[/name_f], and [name_f]Maisie[/name_f].
@southern.maple that’s a good point!
I actually prefer short names too ([name_m]Ben[/name_m], [name_m]Luke[/name_m], [name_f]Eve[/name_f], [name_f]Nell[/name_f], etc)
But I’ve chosen to go with longer versions in order to give my (future) kids more options ([name_m]Benedict[/name_m] and [name_f]Noelle[/name_f])
I think [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] & [name_m]Archie[/name_m] or [name_f]Emme[/name_f] & [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] are actually great together. As people have said, it’s sorta of a case by case basis, where sometimes it would be weird, but most of the time it’s fine.
Ehh, as a name nerd I’d definitely notice, and I’d also likely assume one was short for something, but I don’t think it matters in the bigger picture. They’ll only be introduced as siblings for a short period of life, anyway, although the one with a NN might feel slighted when pursuing a professional identity.
