MN for John or James

Being stuck on my boys list ([name]Abram[/name], [name]Jude[/name], [name]Gideon[/name]), I decided to get back to the basics. I do love the timeless and handsome quality of [name]John[/name] and [name]James[/name]. And they feel unusual to me in a sea of Jaydens and Atticuses. But DH says absolutely no - they are too common and too ordinary for him. So my plan is to make a list of name combos using [name]John[/name] or [name]James[/name] as first names, and really whimsical, unusual, or guilty pleasure names that balance out the [name]John[/name] and [name]James[/name], and see how he feels. Bonus points if I can get an interesting nn out of the mn or fn/mn combo.

All I’ve got so far is -
[name]John[/name] [name]Darwin[/name]
[name]James[/name] [name]Sparrow[/name] (too Hollywood?)
[name]James[/name] [name]Jupiter[/name]

ehh… that’s all I have! Clearly I need more creative minds for help.

This experiment could end up a total fail. But if nothing else, it’ll be fun!

Oh, I love [name]John[/name] and [name]James[/name]! Timeless names are so great on either sex, and especially on boys (to my taste)!

I like your combos! [name]James[/name] [name]Sparrow[/name] is adorable, although the s’s run into each other a little? Is that the exact name of the [name]Johnny[/name] Depp character? I’m remembering [name]Jack[/name] [name]Sparrow[/name] so that’s not too much if I’m right (although [name]Jack[/name] to me is a plausible nickname for both [name]James[/name] and [name]John[/name], it’s more direct to [name]John[/name]).

[name]John[/name] [name]Darwin[/name] is fun although maybe a little more staid than I think what you’re going for, actually?

Speaking of [name]Jack[/name], I always see it as a route to [name]Jago[/name] and [name]Jagger[/name]. [name]Jago[/name] is in fact a name on its own derived from [name]James[/name]/[name]Jacob[/name], so there are two reasons it’s a plausible nn for [name]James[/name], and [name]Jagger[/name]'s just a step away. Would these awesome rockstar/rockstar-ish nns help your husband come around to [name]John[/name] and/or [name]James[/name]?

Hmm, I can see Han or [name]Hans[/name] as a nn for [name]John[/name], which might help your husband if he’s into [name]Star[/name] Wars. [name]John[/name] Solo : D? or even [name]John[/name] [name]Solomon[/name] nn (more like house name) Han Solo ; ) ?

[name]James[/name] [name]Jupiter[/name] is fun. JJ? If you like that alliteration, [name]James[/name] [name]Jethro[/name]? Another Biblical name, and it’s in a rock band’s name! I see [name]Jet/name as a plausible cool nn for [name]James[/name] [name]Jethro[/name].

[name]John[/name] [name]Wayne[/name]? Too much? [name]John[/name] [name]Cash[/name]/[name]Cassian[/name]/[name]Cassius[/name]/[name]Caspian[/name]? These allude to two cool guys.

[name]John[/name] or [name]James[/name] [name]Xavier[/name]? I can see a little [name]Jax[/name] coming from that combo, from either first name. Jox…too much.

[name]John[/name] [name]Zane[/name]? Some sites list [name]Zane[/name] as derived from [name]John[/name]. Is JZ too much?

Best wishes! I love [name]Abram[/name], [name]Gideon[/name], and [name]Jude[/name] too so you’ll have something great in the end, I’m sure!

jesba - you always have the greatest ideas!

[name]James[/name] [name]Jethro[/name] is awesome. DH will hate it. He’s definitely more [name]Star[/name] Wars than Rolling Stones. [name]John[/name] [name]Cash[/name] would normally appeal to him, but we know several people who have little “[name]Cash[/name]” kids… and they aren’t exactly our favorite people. It’s like the redneck name du jour where we live. What do you think of [name]John[/name] [name]Cosimo[/name]?

I came up with this idea because I liked the name [name]Darwin[/name] for [name]Charles[/name] [name]Darwin[/name] ([name]Linus[/name] is also a favorite) - but living in the South, the sad reality is that it could be a real problem growing up. Maybe [name]John[/name] [name]Edison[/name] or [name]James[/name] [name]Edison[/name] too?

I definitely see the Ss running together on [name]James[/name] [name]Sparrow[/name], but I thought that’d be better than [name]John[/name] - like you said, it’s closer to [name]Jack[/name] that way. I do think [name]Sparrow[/name] is adorable.

[name]James[/name] Dillinger? (Better than [name]John[/name] Dillinger)

I also like the nn [name]Jem[/name] for [name]James[/name].

And I’ve come up with some mythological pairings:

[name]John[/name] [name]Argus[/name] (Hellooooo [name]Gus[/name]!)
[name]James[/name] [name]Apollo[/name]
[name]John[/name] Alastor (being the spirit of blood feuds and vengeance?? That’s hardcore).
[name]John[/name]/[name]James[/name] [name]Vulcan[/name] (too much? He’s the “mascot” of our hometown)

[name]Glad[/name] you like some of them! [name]Ah[/name], yes, [name]Darwin[/name], a great name, indeed sadly loaded in parts of the country (I’m well familiar). I mean, I don’t know how often kids go around sharing middle names, especially boys. But, especially since I don’t see it rolling to a great nickname, you might let it go. I do like [name]John[/name] [name]Edison[/name] and [name]James[/name] [name]Edison[/name], and I think you could call him hip cowboy [name]Jed[/name] if you wanted (or maybe [name]Jedi[/name]? : D, ha!). Would the initials spell something cool with that? Like [name]Jeb[/name] or [name]Jed[/name] or [name]Jem[/name] or [name]Jet[/name]? I can also see these combos leading into [name]Jackson[/name] or [name]Jameson[/name] as nns, which might be more his style?

I hear you on [name]Cash[/name]…it is a little…hard to put my finger on it. I do like it but it’s vaguely uncomfortable in the application. [name]John[/name] [name]Cosimo[/name] - love it! [name]John[/name] [name]Casimir[/name]? Is Jonco a cool nickname (like bronco)? [name]John[/name] [name]Dashiell[/name]? If your husband is into [name]Johnny[/name] [name]Cash[/name], maybe some middle cool name starting with R (do you know his story? [name]Born[/name] J.R., then the military wouldn’t accept it so he changed it to [name]John[/name] R. just to fill out the paperwork, at least that’s what Wikipedia claims). [name]Roscoe[/name]? [name]Rafferty[/name] ([name]Raff[/name]!)? [name]Rocco[/name]?

[name]James[/name] [name]Sparrow[/name] really is OK…it really is a z at the end of [name]James[/name], so there is some distinction. [name]James[/name] [name]Arrow[/name]? Another thing with [name]James[/name] [name]Sparrow[/name] is that [name]Sparrow[/name], although it has a lot of masculine sounds, is kind of feminine in imagery…it’s like a songbird. Still like it though, [name]Johnny[/name] Depp is just so fun.

I could get into any of the new ones you came up with! Nice when they lend themselves to nicknames though the best, like [name]Gus[/name] for [name]Argus[/name] or maybe [name]Al[/name] for Alastor. [name]Vulcan[/name] makes me chuckle since you said he’s “more [name]Star[/name] Wars.” Does he also like [name]Star[/name] Trek? [name]James[/name] [name]Kirk[/name]? [name]John[/name] [name]Kirk[/name]? [name]John[/name] [name]Tiberius[/name], maybe nn [name]Ty[/name]? [name]James[/name] [name]Tiberius[/name] is a maybe too much, maybe not : D.

[name]Glad[/name] this is seeming fun for you and hope it continues to be. Best wishes!
