Modern names with a classic feel for girls

I couldn’t help mirroring harperburge’s thread when her question so appropriately mirrored my own burning query. I love the name [name_f]Juno[/name_f], nn [name_u]June[/name_u] or [name_f]Junie[/name_f]. I love that it fits in with modern trends, it’s a bit offbeat…but then the nn [name_u]June[/name_u] is so tame and classic. I love nicknames. I used to love long classic names like [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] with the nn [name_u]Josie[/name_u] or [name_u]Jo[/name_u] and [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] with the nn Maise or [name_u]Mo[/name_u]. I’d love some suggestions for updated names with familiar nicknames. Anything you can think of would be lovely. I am desperate for new inspiration. Our name list is beginning to feel pretty stale.

P.S. Does anyone have nickname ideas for [name_f]Lyra[/name_f]? My husband is just so absolutely set on it and I can’t get over the fact that there are no easy nicknames.

Like [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] in length, [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] is coming back with nn’s [name_f]Tilly[/name_f] or [name_f]Tilda[/name_f]. [name_f]Clara[/name_f] has an old time feel, but nn Claireis an option. [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f], nn’s [name_f]Eva[/name_f], [name_f]Evie[/name_f], [name_f]Eve[/name_f], and [name_f]Lena[/name_f], is relatively unheard, as is [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f], nn’s [name_f]Em[/name_f], [name_f]Emma[/name_f] and more. [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] is a biblical classic, but not heard a lot, nn’s [name_f]Mimi[/name_f] and [name_f]Miri[/name_f]. [name_f]Kathleen[/name_f]/[name_f]Cathleen[/name_f] are fresher options to [name_f]Katherine[/name_f]/[name_f]Catherine[/name_f], but still have nn’s [name_f]Kate[/name_f], [name_f]Katie[/name_f] and [name_f]Kathy[/name_f].
[name_f]Hope[/name_f] some of these help!

[name_f]Mabel[/name_f] is my newest favourite old name. NN [name_f]Mae[/name_f], [name_u]Mel[/name_u], [name_f]Belle[/name_f], [name_f]Bella[/name_f]. [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] is just so sweet!

it may be a bit of a stretch but [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] nn [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] ?

Great question!
Here’s a few ideas:
[name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] - [name_f]Lettie[/name_f]
[name_f]Imogen[/name_f] - [name_f]Gen[/name_f]/[name_f]Genna[/name_f]
[name_f]Minerva[/name_f] - [name_f]Minnie[/name_f]
[name_f]Jocelyn[/name_f] - [name_u]Josie[/name_u]

Nicknames for [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] (this is just a brainstorm-type list, so lots of weird suggestions!):
[name_u]Lee[/name_u]
[name_u]Riley[/name_u]
[name_f]Lulu[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]
Lyrie
[name_f]Lilo[/name_f]
[name_u]Lyric[/name_u]
[name_u]Harper[/name_u] (because of the harp meaning? This is a bit of a stretch . . . )

If you don’t want to provide this info, that’s totally fine (no pressure), but there might be a some nns made from some combo of [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] + your surname. Maybe you could just say what it sounds like? Or if you don’t want to give it out, which is completely understandable, perhaps you could still think about it yourself, maybe that will help you find a nn you like

Oh, I just thought of:
[name_f]Selene[/name_f] - [name_f]Sally[/name_f] or [name_f]Lena[/name_f]
[name_f]Bianca[/name_f] - [name_f]Bea[/name_f]
[name_f]Annika[/name_f] - [name_f]Annie[/name_f]/[name_f]Anna[/name_f]
[name_f]Jemima[/name_f] - [name_f]Jemma[/name_f]

[name_f]Lyra[/name_f] is beautiful all it’s own, and imho does not require a nickname because it’s so short.

[name_u]Harper[/name_u] is not a nickname, it’s entirely unrelated. I personally feel that [name_u]Harper[/name_u] has less to do with harps then it does to harp on someone, to nag and demand incessantly. It’s like calling your kid Banshee or Obnoxious. A Harpist or a [name_u]Harper[/name_u] are both words used for [name_m]Harp[/name_m] players, but [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] is a nicer way to denote the profession without bringing to mind winged Harpies.

If you want to use [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] as a nn and find a longer version there are some possibilities like [name_u]Lyric[/name_u], Illyria, Aleera, and Lyriope for the brave.

[name_u]Eden[/name_u] – [name_f]Edie[/name_f]
[name_u]Macey[/name_u] – [name_f]Mae[/name_f]
[name_u]Ashby[/name_u] – [name_f]Bea[/name_f]
[name_u]Fable[/name_u]– [name_f]Faye[/name_f]
[name_u]Sinclair[/name_u] - [name_f]Claire[/name_f]
[name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] or [name_u]Sutton[/name_u] - [name_f]Sue[/name_f]
