Trying to come up with some girl names to give a nod to our southern roots. Not really into the double name thing, although we could be persuaded with the right combo. And when I say “modern,” I know a lot of old names are now “new” again, so really just looking for something that is not going to be topping the popularity charts…
I really like names that feature the long “I” like - [name]Lila[/name] (becoming too trendy?), Allidah (husband hates), or [name]Emmaline[/name] (too much like the popular [name]Emma[/name]). Also does not need to end in a “ah” sound.
Really the most Southern name you can give is your maiden name or another name from the family tree. NOT any surname you think sounds good, but a genuine family surname.
One genuinely Texan name I can think of is [name]Lamar[/name] (after a President of [name]Texas[/name]). Generally Southern heroes are a good source of Southern names.
I think you get the idea, haha. There is a trend of giving family surnames to both sons and daughters. I know quite a few girls (in their teens, 20s, and 30s) named things like [name]McKenna[/name], [name]Blakely[/name], [name]Murray[/name], [name]Landry[/name], [name]Britton[/name], etc. I hope this gives you some ideas.
I think “old south” names for girls are so fun but being from the south myself I would never use one on my children (lol, bit backwards i know). The best ones are ultra feminine and super sweet [name]IMO[/name].
Adding [name]Mae[/name], [name]Ann[/name], and [name]Lynn[/name] to short names insta southernizes a name haha. Also using LNs from your mother’s side.
The best inspiration is going to be classic books and movies based in the south (To Kill a Mockingbird/Gone With The Wind etc). Good luck!!
