My husband’s name is [name]August[/name] and he wasn’t born in [name]August[/name]. I think it’s fine and actually would find it a bit cheesy if they did match.

It depends on the reason, if you love it use it. I love [name]August[/name] and would use it no matter what month if I could get DH on board with it. [name]Summer[/name] has meaning to me and DH and it (or some variation) will be used as our first daughter’s middle name again regardless of season.

I have cousin named [name]Summer[/name], born in the fall. It annoys her because everyone assumes she was born in the summer or joke that her name should have been [name]Autumn[/name].

So I say for seasons, yes, otherwise it’s just odd and becomes annoying for the person with the name.

For months it really depends. [name]August[/name], [name]May[/name], [name]April[/name], and [name]June[/name] are all pretty common month names, but there is still the annoying factor that some people will assume that’s when you were born. But if you go and use February or [name]September[/name], I would first find it very odd, but even more so if the child wasn’t born in that month.

I was talking about this earlier, and came to the conclusion that the more common month names ([name]April[/name], [name]May[/name], [name]June[/name] etc) can be used whenever the child is born as they have been established names for so long. However, I personally would find it a bit odd for a girl called [name]Winter[/name] to be born in [name]August[/name], or an [name]October[/name] to be born in [name]March[/name].

I think your poll is skewed, because the question asked in the poll is the opposite of the implied question in the title of this post.

But, answering the poll question, yes, I think the month/season name and the time of birth should match. I think to give a name that doesn’t match makes the name somewhat meaningless. Although, I’m not all that fond of month/season baby names in general.

I will see if I can fix that. But I am sure most people can understand that one is a poll question while the other is the title of thread.

I think you’d be surprised at how little attention people pay to things like that. I only say that because I’m a blogger and people always comment on things without having read what I actually wrote, even when I clearly have the answer to their question/include their point/etc. in the post. But, eh, I’m rather inobservant myself I guess! I clicked “NO!” on the poll before noticing the question, then changed my answer. Makes me curious how many people actually don’t agree that the month/birth date should match.

I have a daughter called [name]May[/name] who was born in February- we really loved the name, its vintage feel and the traditional spelling and hadn’t even thought about the month name until someone asked us if she was born in [name]May[/name]. Although both myself and DH were born in [name]May[/name] which is a lovely accidental connection. I also know a [name]Summer[/name] born in winter, an [name]April[/name] born in [name]August[/name] and a [name]Sunday[/name] born on a [name]Tuesday[/name]!So I don’t think it matters at all.

[name]August[/name] and [name]Julius[/name] ([name]July[/name]) are the only times that I think it’s approriate as the months were named after people.

I would use [name]April[/name]/[name]May[/name]/[name]June[/name] as middle names only, if the girl wasn’t born during the corresponding month. The same rule applies for seasons.

The same goes for day of the week names: [name]Tuesday[/name]/[name]Wednesday[/name]/Friday.

My thoughts exactly.

Interesting! I always thought they should match until recently. I have [name]August[/name] on our list and probably won’t be having a baby in [name]August[/name], so I was debating if I could use it or not. I realize, that with [name]August[/name], the name has meaning beyond just being a month, so I feel comfortable using it, but I was still curious about all the other names.

I don’t think it shouldn’t necessarily, but it doesn’t have to. You could have a baby [name]May[/name] born in [name]May[/name], but she doesn’t need to be born in [name]May[/name]!

I agree with some of the previous posters that how commonly-used the name is matters. I wouldn’t assume a woman named [name]April[/name] was born in that month because it’s frequently used as a name. However, I don’t find it surprising that [name]January[/name] [name]Jones[/name] was born in [name]January[/name]. On a side note, I saw an article talking about celebrities picking “unusual” names for their children and it mentioned her son, [name]Xander[/name]. That name is just outside the top 200 and her name is [name]January[/name], for crying out loud!

Also [name]May[/name] was originally a nickname for [name]Mary[/name] or [name]Margaret[/name] which has nothing to do with the month.

I think [name]August[/name] is the only exception since its meaning (‘grand, venerable, great’) is completely separate from the month name. The month itself was, of course, originally named in honor of [name]Julius[/name] [name]Caesar[/name], “[name]Augustus[/name],” and bore the honorific.

For the others I suppose you could argue that the child makes you feel whatever the season is attempting to evoke (i.e. an [name]April[/name] makes you feel young, vibrant and fresh; a [name]Summer[/name] is languid and sultry; an [name]Autumn[/name] is crisp and sweet), but it’s a stretch.

[name]January[/name], February, [name]March[/name], [name]May[/name], and [name]June[/name] all come from [name]Roman[/name] deities - [name]Janus[/name], Februus, [name]Mars[/name], Maista, and [name]Juno[/name]. [name]April[/name] means “to open.” The last four come from numbers. [name]July[/name] and [name]August[/name] have been covered (they were originally known as Quintilis and Sixtilis).

I get the commonly-used argument. However, all the months mean something outside the month they indicate, so why pick and choose that some are okay because of meaning, but not others?

[name]Just[/name] curious

I think it is OK. It would make more sense if the day/month etc. you were naming the baby had some special significance even if it is quite weak (eg. you are naming the baby after something good that happened at a certain time)

This is interesting. I love [name]August[/name], but I would feel weird using it for a boy that wasn’t born in [name]August[/name]…maybe if he was conceived in [name]August[/name]… I guess if the month has special meaning, it would be okay.

Actually there is possibility that [name]April[/name] got its names from [name]Aphrodite[/name]/[name]Venus[/name]. [name]June[/name] from [name]Juno[/name] and [name]May[/name] from [name]Maia[/name] or something like that. Not sure.
