My DH just texted me that he likes the name [name_m]Mordecai[/name_m]. He likes so few names that I am tempted to like it just for that reason alone. My current opinion is that it’s not THAT bad. Thoughts?
I will apologize right off the bat. I have a limited amount of names I am not fond of, many can fit the neutral category. [name_m]Mordecai[/name_m] fits the not fond of category. My only association is the [name_m]Johnny[/name_m] Depp character. I do love [name_m]Johnny[/name_m] Depp…but not so much his character [name_m]Mordecai[/name_m]. I do love [name_u]Kai[/name_u].
I have no explanation as to why, but this name just makes me cringe. But I think it is becoming more popular, so I think other people don’t feel the way I do If you really like it, go for it!
I think [name_m]Mordecai[/name_m] is a really cool name! It’s very bold and feels quite heavy, but could be lightened with a sweet, approachable nickname like [name_u]Mo[/name_u] or [name_u]Cai[/name_u]. I feel like [name_m]Mordecai[/name_m] in full is in the same vein as names like [name_m]Maximus[/name_m] and [name_m]Maverick[/name_m] - great names, but big names that you’d need a certain amount of chutzpah to pull off.
[name_m]Malachi[/name_m] is a slightly softer alternative which might be less divisive.
@katinka, I like the nn [name_u]Mo[/name_u], but I think I like [name_m]Malachi[/name_m] better. Thanks for the suggestion
Thanks everyone!!
I really like this name - it’s strong and handsome. [name_m]Mordecai[/name_m] in the Bible was a very righteous man. Only good connotations for me! [name_f]Lovely[/name_f] choice for a little boy.
[name_m]Mordecai[/name_m] is actually a family name for both me and my husband, so we’re actually considering it as a middle for our little one due in [name_u]July[/name_u]. My husband would use it as a first name, but, although I like the name, I don’t think I like it enough for that. However, I don’t usually like biblical names in general. There are a lot of cute nicknames for [name_m]Mordecai[/name_m] and I do really like the scholarly vibe it gives me.
I wouldn’t use it, but I think it’s a cool name. My understanding is that it’s fairly popular in Jewish communities. If you want a less popular alternative to [name_m]Malachi[/name_m], [name_m]Mordecai[/name_m] is your man.
[name_m]Ah[/name_m], I’m in the same boat as you with my husband! Definitely know the feeling!!
I do like [name_m]Mordecai[/name_m], actually! It’s a little out there and would probably stand out, but I don’t see it as being a complete oddball of a name, if that makes sense. It lends to a few obvious nicknames, such as [name_u]Mo[/name_u] or [name_u]Kai[/name_u], which I feel makes the name more wearable. Something to be aware of, though, is that the name strikes me as very religious. Totally not a bad thing, but if that were to bother you, then that is something to just take note of. For what it’s worth, [name_m]Mordecai[/name_m] (in the book of [name_f]Esther[/name_f]) was a wise, kind, active man of his faith
Exactly this. lol I prefer [name_m]Malachi[/name_m] to [name_m]Mordecai[/name_m], which is saying something because I associate [name_m]Malachi[/name_m] with Children of the Corn…
I agree with this, even though [name_m]Malachi[/name_m] is an insane serial killer of adults. I personally would stay far from both. But I have never known, met, heard the name called out of either [name_m]Mordecai[/name_m] or [name_m]Malachi[/name_m]. The association to each is very, very strong.
I want to like it, but for some reason the name gives me a bad vibe That’s just my opinion, though, and not really grounded in anything substantial.
I do like [name_m]Mordecai[/name_m]! It’s a cool, unexpected alternative to [name_m]Malachi[/name_m]! It has a solid, handsome sound to it. [name_u]Love[/name_u] the built in nn [name_u]Cai[/name_u].
This name just sounds plain evil to me.
Mor means death and thus gets used for many fictional evil characters (eg. Mordor in LOTR.)
Mord means murder in [name_m]German[/name_m] (I’m from Germany, so I can’t ever unsee that.)
And the last part of the name sounds like “decay” to me. :-/
