Too Arthurian/King [name_m]Arthur[/name_m]/Medieval?

Supposedly the nephew and usurper of [name_m]King[/name_m] [name_m]Arthur[/name_m].

[name_m]Don[/name_m]'t plan to use the name but kinda think the name is cool. :crossed_swords:

I think it’s usually spelt Mordred. It definitely does have a steely ancient vibe but it sounds very morbid to me!

I corrected it soon as you wrote a reply. It was my autocorrect

Auto-correct gets us every time, doesn’t it?

Yep! Still laughing at the time I messaged my partner asking him to pick me up ‘some lover’ when it was meant to be liver.

It sounds very villan like to me. It would be cool to hear the name revived in a TV series or film or something.

Mordred sounds very mysterious, and also very dark. I kind of like it, but I have a hard time imagining it on a real child (I know you’re not planning to actually use it).

I love Mordred! It’s been on my lists for years, but I’ve only recently gotten to a place where I think I would actually consider it (berries were very convincingly against it when I’ve asked in the past). To me, it’s no more morbid or strange than people using [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f], [name_f]Juliet[/name_f], [name_f]Persephone[/name_f], [name_f]Lilith[/name_f], [name_f]Jezebel[/name_f], [name_u]Tristan[/name_u], or [name_f]Morgana[/name_f] (who was the alleged mother of Mordred). It’s a name with a solid meaning (either brave or controlled depending on where you look), it’s pronounced how it’s spelled so it’s easy for people, most have heard it before so it’s unique without being unknown.

I want to like it but it reminds me a bit of morbid

I’ve always loved this name as well as the character! I always think of a handsome, mysterious dude and less of the character’s dark side, so I think it would be really cool if I ever met a kid with this name. As a side thought, if you really don’t want to use Mordred, how about [name_m]Morys[/name_m] instead? It means dark one and it’s literally what I chose over Mordred.

I kind of love it extremely a lot

There is a UK TV series based on Arthurian legend called ‘[name_m]Merlin[/name_m]’ and Mordred makes an appearence. It was on Netflix at some point, but I’m not sure if it still is. The name itself does remind me of the legend, but [name_m]Mordecai[/name_m] might be a more useable alternative if you were ever looking for one!

This is a major GP of mine, I love a lot of Arthurian legend names and I think Mordred sounds so cool but it is definitely way too strong of an association :frowning:

Love that show. [name_u]Asa[/name_u] Butterfield’s Mordred can definitely endear you to the name. I feel like it’s a gp of mine but I don’t think I’d ever use it for a kid possibly for a cat.

I want to like it, but the sounds, the associations, and the background are all dark to me. Because of the sound associations with “morbid” and “dread,” the character himself, and the fact that the sounds are very common in the names of dark characters and places (think Mordor, Morgoth, Morgoroth), it seems heavy for a child.

Unfortunately, all I can think of is ‘more dread’ and ‘Mordor’

Interesting. Visually it comes across as similar to morbid and murder.

It sounds too much like Morbid and Dread to me, plus some aspects about the character in stories is not good.
