I went through a list of philosophers, just to see what would come up. Here are some options based on that:
[name_m]Marcus[/name_m] (like [name_m]Marcus[/name_m] [name_m]Aurelius[/name_m])
[name_m]Immanuel[/name_m] / [name_m]Emmanuel[/name_m]
[name_m]Locke[/name_m]
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m]
[name_m]Pius[/name_m]
Aquinas
[name_m]Aristotle[/name_m] / Ariosto
[name_u]Carroll[/name_u]
[name_m]Stuart[/name_m]
[name_m]Solomon[/name_m] / [name_m]Sol[/name_m]
[name_m]Leon[/name_m]
Quine
Ramus / [name_m]Ramsey[/name_m] / [name_m]Rasmus[/name_m]
[name_m]Sylvan[/name_m] / [name_m]Sylvain[/name_m] / Sylvio
Watts
Vives / [name_m]Yves[/name_m]
[name_m]Antonius[/name_m]
Through namehunter:
[name_u]August[/name_u] (like the previous poster already mentioned)
[name_m]Cable[/name_m]
[name_m]Adriel[/name_m]
[name_m]Tynan[/name_m] / Turnus / [name_m]Tybalt[/name_m]
[name_m]Georgius[/name_m]
[name_m]Ilias[/name_m] / Iliad
Names that came to mind:
[name_m]Knox[/name_m]
[name_m]Fox[/name_m]
[name_m]Cyprus[/name_m] / [name_f]Cypress[/name_f]
[name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] (like [name_f]Ambrosia[/name_f], the food of the gods)
Polyphemos (means possesses many talents)
[name_m]Tiberius[/name_m]
I love [name_u]Sage[/name_u]. Here are some names that came to mind:
[name_u]Claude[/name_u] / [name_m]Claudius[/name_m]
[name_m]Perseus[/name_m]
[name_m]Ambrosius[/name_m] / [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m]
[name_m]Hector[/name_m]
[name_m]Lysander[/name_m] (I think this goes very well with [name_u]Sage[/name_u] while still sounding epic)
[name_m]Castor[/name_m]
[name_m]Dionysus[/name_m]
[name_m]Isidore[/name_m]
[name_m]Hercule[/name_m]
Astrophel (means ‘friend of the stars’)
[name_m]Augustus[/name_m]
[name_m]Nestor[/name_m]
[name_m]Plato[/name_m]
[name_m]Aristotle[/name_m]
[name_m]Dante[/name_m]
Philomenes
Yes, I am glad it’s been a few years between kids. With my first one, I indulged my love for modern, unisex nature and word names. I love the minimalist, understated appeal of [name_u]Sage[/name_u]. Had I had another baby right away, I may have ended up with an [name_m]Arrow[/name_m] or [name_u]Quinn[/name_u]!
But I also love long elaborate and ancient names, and I feel the combo will work well, especially when there’s a shared bond in meaning or a subtly spiritual “theme.”
I like [name_m]Julian[/name_m]. [name_m]Octavian[/name_m] is funny, I kind of find myself thinking about [name_f]Octavia[/name_f] for a girl quite a bit. I will also be adding [name_m]Lucian[/name_m]!
I know a [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m], so I’m debating adding that one. Thanks again!
I AM a philosopher so this is exactly what I’m looking for Of philosopher names, I really love
Aquinas
[name_u]Seneca[/name_u]
[name_m]Berkeley[/name_m]
[name_m]Aurelian[/name_m] would in parts be a nod to [name_m]Marcus[/name_m] [name_m]Aurelius[/name_m]. (Also I love that it means “the golden one”.)
I like [name_m]Adriel[/name_m] and I love [name_m]Ilias[/name_m]! In fact, it’s on my list for a family name to pass on! I only have super ethnic-sounding names in my family, do you think [name_m]Ilias[/name_m] sounds ethnic (in a bad way, confusing or non-appealing to the Western ear?)
I love both [name_m]Aurelian[/name_m] and [name_m]Aurelien[/name_m]! [name_f]Happy[/name_f] about all the love for the name
I have [name_f]Acacia[/name_f] on my list for a girl!
I love [name_f]Aquila[/name_f], but don’t like how it’s totally pink on NB. I prefer it on a boy!
Adding [name_m]Cassian[/name_m] and [name_m]Jovian[/name_m] and [name_m]Nereus[/name_m]! Awesome ideas!
[name_m]Leonidas[/name_m] and [name_m]Lysander[/name_m] are on my list
[name_u]Taliesin[/name_u] and [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] are wonderful too! Great suggestions!
I agree that [name_m]Lysander[/name_m] and [name_u]Sage[/name_u] in combination have something epic about them (if I got that right.) It’s that epicness I’m after
[name_m]Isidore[/name_m] is wonderful, as is [name_m]Perseus[/name_m]! I’m so happy about all these great suggestions! Feeling very inspired now
I don’t know how to quote but I’m replying to your reply to my suggestions.
[name_m]Ilias[/name_m] is a really cool name. Reminds me of [name_m]Silas[/name_m]. Definitely exotic from a Western perspective, but not necessarily in a bad way. It is a variation of the name [name_m]Elijah[/name_m], which isn’t common but definitely familiar (actually, thinking about it now, it is very similar to [name_u]Elias[/name_u], which isn’t strange to the ear at all). You could “Westernize” it a bit with a nickname like [name_u]Lee[/name_u], or I could see it be used for a middle name (I love the idea of passing down middle names!).
[name_m]Aurelian[/name_m] [name_m]Ilias[/name_m] / [name_m]Ilias[/name_m] [name_m]Aurelian[/name_m], (could lend itself to nicknames like [name_u]Ira[/name_u] or [name_u]Ari[/name_u])
[name_m]Adriel[/name_m] [name_m]Ilias[/name_m] / [name_m]Ilias[/name_m] [name_m]Adriel[/name_m], ([name_f]Addi[/name_f] or Dill would be so cute!)
[name_m]Ilias[/name_m] [name_m]Berkeley[/name_m] / [name_m]Berkeley[/name_m] [name_m]Ilias[/name_m] (I like how these combos sound, actually. Very distinguished)
Based on options from other posters:
[name_m]Lysander[/name_m] [name_m]Ilias[/name_m] (epic )
[name_u]Emerson[/name_u] [name_m]Ilias[/name_m] / [name_m]Ilias[/name_m] [name_u]Emerson[/name_u] (I adore the name [name_u]Emerson[/name_u]!)
[name_m]Isidore[/name_m] [name_m]Ilias[/name_m] (cute alliteration, but maybe [name_u]Elias[/name_u] [name_m]Isidore[/name_m] or [name_m]Isidore[/name_m] [name_u]Elias[/name_u] would be better)
[name_m]Jerome[/name_m] [name_m]Ilias[/name_m] / [name_m]Ilias[/name_m] [name_m]Jerome[/name_m]
I grew up around Polish and Russian names like [name_f]Alyosha[/name_f] and [name_m]Oleg[/name_m], so a name like [name_m]Ilias[/name_m] doesn’t totally faze me. I can see why it would be a bit strange but honestly, I think it could work.
I know this isn’t quite what you’re looking for but : Pyrus.
Name of a genus of pear tree… which were in the sublime orchard of Alcinous, in Odyssey vii which is sort of spiritual I suppose because the plants would never die? (probably a stretch)… the pear is also a particularly sacred tree in some tree worshiping religions to the point where it would be forbidden to cut them down. I consider it sort of modern- spiritual in a weird way because of the twelve days of [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] song (the partridge in the pear tree being I guess [name_m]Christ[/name_m] on the cross?)
I like Pyrus with [name_u]Sage[/name_u], but maybe it’s too wordy, or not namey enough? Thought I’d throw it out there.
