I posted this at the bottom of my thread about the name [name]Eliza[/name], so I thought I’d start a new post to get more feedback, as I’m not sure if anyone will notice my buried response on that one.
Top name picks at this point are [name]Eliza[/name], [name]Tessa[/name], [name]Lucy[/name] (although that one is waning on me), [name]Clara[/name], maybe [name]Molly[/name]. I like shorter but still feminine girl names.
A few questions:
I don’t like [name]Teresa[/name]/[name]Theresa[/name] due to a negative association, and though [name]Tessa[/name] is a bit nickname-y, I suppose, it doesn’t seem wrong as a given name. To me, nicknames like [name]Maggie[/name] or [name]Katie[/name] seem like they shouldn’t be given names, but [name]Tessa[/name] feels okay for some reason. What do you think?
[name]Do[/name] people find [name]Tessa[/name] to be trendy? I really don’t want to pick a trendy name, but I looked up the popularity and it seems to be somewhat steady since the 1990s (between 200 and 300 consistently), so I don’t think I see it jumping up a ton of spots or sinking down quickly, but I’m no expert.
As much as I do like [name]Clara[/name] (although it’s not my top one or two), my hesitation there is that our last name is two syllables starting with the same hard K sound: K***ler. Sometimes I like alliteration, but in this case, does it sound too singsong-y?
Thanks again, all. You’ve been a big help already!
[name]Tessa[/name] is a pretty name. I think of it as a stand alone name, mostly, I guess, because there was a girl named [name]Tessa[/name] in my classes in elementary school.
I’m not a big fan of alitrations in names, so I wouldn’t name your daughter [name]Clara[/name], although I like the name in & of itself
I do think [name]Tessa[/name] stands alone fine, particularly because it’s an -a ending name, so it wouldn’t seem out of place when popular names right now include [name]Olivia[/name], [name]Emma[/name], [name]Isabella[/name], [name]Sophia[/name], [name]Mia[/name] and [name]Ella[/name].
I find the ‘ee’ sound on the end of short forms like [name]Maggie[/name] and [name]Katie[/name] is what makes them sound so “nicknamey”, as opposed to a name like [name]Tessa[/name], does that make sense?
[name]Tessa[/name] is not trendy at all - lol, what makes it trendy? It’s a timeless classic that has had steady popularity for a long time, your fine.
I think it works fine as a stand - alone name.
I don’t mind the alliteration with your last name.
I really like both [name]Eliza[/name] and [name]Tessa[/name] best out of the names on your list. I would encourage you to use [name]Clara[/name], as I happen to like the name myself, but I think it might sound a bit sing-songy with your last name.
As for [name]Tessa[/name]… I understand your concern about it being too “nicknamey”… but it seems complete to me. If you wanted to use just [name]Tess[/name], then I would agree that it sounds more like a nickname than a full name. But [name]Tessa[/name], despite being a form of the longer [name]Teresa[/name], seems like a useable, full name to me. I looked up its popularity as well, and like you mentioned, it has remained very steady in the 200 - 300 range for at least 20 years. This makes it seem even more useable to me. It it truly were “trendy”, it would have rocketed up on the charts, then plummeted again. But it hasn’t; it’s remained a constant, steady, useable choice. It’s not exceedingly popular nor completely obscure. So I think it’s a very nice choice!
So if I were you, I would choose either [name]Eliza[/name] or [name]Tessa[/name], both of which are very lovely names. [name]Hope[/name] this helps!
Thank you! It’s so encouraging to know we have a couple great options and hopefully baby won’t be unnamed for more than a day after birth like DS was
To the previous poster who wondered why I would think [name]Tessa[/name] could be trendy, in spite of the popularity staying pretty constant over many years, I guess it just SEEMS like a name that would be trendy to me… I’m not sure how to explain it! Maybe because I like it so much I feel like all of a sudden everyone else will too and it will skyrocket? Not logical, I realize
Yes, [name]Tessa[/name] and [name]Eliza[/name] are the two top choices at this point, and I feel like I’m leaning away from [name]Clara[/name] because of the last name issue - plus, I just don’t like it as much as [name]Tessa[/name] and [name]Eliza[/name].
I actually like [name]Tess[/name] a lot, too, which is another thing I find appealing about [name]Tessa[/name]: it has a built-in nickname should she choose to use it when she’s older. I like the added option.
