What associations do you have for the name [name_m]Mortimer[/name_m]? We want an out of the ordinary, older, but still recognizable name. [name_m]Will[/name_m] we regret it? We like this name but don’t want to be cruel.
If it’s a girl we’d go with [name_f]Margot[/name_f]. We’re struggling to agree on boys names, but we’ve also considered [name_m]Hugo[/name_m], [name_u]Florian[/name_u], [name_m]Oscar[/name_m], [name_m]Lloyd[/name_m], [name_m]Ivor[/name_m], [name_m]Bernard[/name_m], and [name_m]Magnus[/name_m].
My first and only association is [name_m]Mortimer[/name_m] Goth from the [name_m]Sims[/name_m] - not sure how relevant that is anymore though.
I have to admit [name_m]Mortimer[/name_m] isn’t a name I’d go for, but it does have a variety of nicknames ([name_m]Morty[/name_m], [name_m]Tommy[/name_m], [name_m]Tim[/name_m], [name_m]Timmy[/name_m], [name_m]Moe[/name_m]) so I could see it working. I do prefer [name_m]Magnus[/name_m], [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] and [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] from your list through.
[name_m]Montgomery[/name_m], [name_u]Maurice[/name_u] and [name_m]Wilbur[/name_m] could be some other ideas
I instantly think of [name_m]Mortimer[/name_m] Goth. He’s still in the most current version of [name_m]Sims[/name_m] - [name_m]Sims[/name_m] 4 - so I think most people who play the game will go straight there, but otherwise, I have no associations with the name.
The name itself is a nice older name that hasn’t really come back into popularity yet, though I’m not a fan of the nn [name_m]Morty[/name_m]
I must say I’m not enthusiastic. The prominent “[name_m]Mort[/name_m]” beginning puts me off, since it means death in [name_m]French[/name_m]. The name actually means “dead pond”, as in a stagnant pond, which isn’t a very uplifting image.
You would be much better off with [name_m]Ivor[/name_m], [name_m]Bernard[/name_m] or [name_u]Florian[/name_u], which are all beautiful names with positive nature meanings.
The first thing that comes to mind is the [name_m]Rick[/name_m] and [name_m]Morty[/name_m] character. That association might bother you, but personally I still think [name_m]Mortimer[/name_m] is an attractive and underused name! [name_m]Moe[/name_m] is an adorable nickname too. I do prefer other names from your list, especially [name_m]Bernard[/name_m] (but I love [name_u]Florian[/name_u], [name_m]Magnus[/name_m] and [name_m]Lloyd[/name_m] too)
I think of the Addams family, though I don’t think anyone was named [name_m]Mortimer[/name_m] it still makes me think of darkness and death. It also makes me think of [name_m]Mort[/name_m] from the [name_u]Terry[/name_u] Pratchett book about Death (literally the character of Death, sickle and everything). So, not the best association for a little sweet baby boy.
I think it’s a cool name for a character but not a real person.
[name_m]Mortimer[/name_m] reminds me of death/like a crypt keeper. Sorry. I know someone with this as a surname and always thought it was a hard name to carry.
I wouldn’t do it. I think it is too risky to cause your son issues which sounds like you may already be concerned about. My favourites on your list are:
[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_m]Magnus[/name_m], [name_m]Oscar[/name_m], [name_u]Florian[/name_u], [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] and [name_m]Ivor[/name_m] from your list though.
[name_m]Mortimer[/name_m], to me, is the name of one of the main characters in the Inkspell trilogy, one of my favourite series of books. In the books he goes by [name_u]Mo[/name_u]. Not a bad association imo.
My first thought is [name_m]Mortimer[/name_m] Mouse.
[name_m]Even[/name_m] still, though, I associate the name with death (because of the beginning [name_m]Mort[/name_m]!)
I suppose you could use it if you really loved it, but I personally wouldnt, I’m sorry!
From your list i love [name_m]Hugo[/name_m], [name_u]Florian[/name_u], [name_m]Bernard[/name_m], and [name_m]Oscar[/name_m]! All handsome, quirky, sweet names. I also like [name_m]Ivor[/name_m]!
(also I love [name_f]Margot[/name_f]! Such a beautiful choice!)
I have come to love the name [name_m]Mortimer[/name_m]. I find I am drawn to many names I previously wouldn’t have considered because they are names, historic, actual names as well as rarely used. In a freak show of Wreckers, Shooters, and Cravens and a glut of Maddies, Caitlyns, and Jaidens, I find [name_m]Mortimer[/name_m] delightful.
I would nn him [name_m]Timmy[/name_m]/[name_m]Tim[/name_m] or [name_m]Morty[/name_m].
I have no associations with the name though it does sound Dickensian.
