I went to school with a family that had five girls; [name_f]Kayla[/name_f], Kaysha, Kaarliyah, Kazel and [name_f]Kayda[/name_f]…from the moment I heard their names I cringed. Mine and my brother’s names are quite similar, [name_m]David[/name_m] and [name_f]Darlene[/name_f], and I always thought they were too close for my liking. I guess I made a double standard when I started dreaming of baby girl names, particularly [name_u]Arya[/name_u] and [name_f]Ayla[/name_f]…but have been told they are too close. Does it really matter? They will all grow up individually right…like me and my brother did.
What is your opinion? What sib sets do you despise? Which ones do you love?
This thread is not meant to be offensive to anyone, just interested in your opinions.
The only really terrible one I know is [name_m]Victor[/name_m] and [name_f]Victoria[/name_f]. That’s just downright lazy!
But I think similar sibling sets can be extremely cute when done correctly. Like a blogger I follow that has [name_m]Preston[/name_m], [name_u]Parker[/name_u], and [name_u]Peyton[/name_u]. I’m not necessarily a fan of those names in particular but I find the set cute, close enough to sound nice together but different enough.
One thing I do dislike is when the theme is names that start with the same letter, so names are spelled differently to fit that theme. Take the Duggars, for example. [name_f]Jinger[/name_f] instead of [name_f]Ginger[/name_f]. Call it a pet peeve of mine, I like the original spelling of most names (unless it’s a cultural thing, such as [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] and [name_f]Ofelia[/name_f], which depends on country of origin.)
I don’t like sibsets that are too matchy (like [name_f]Lila[/name_f] and [name_f]Lola[/name_f] or [name_f]Cora[/name_f] and [name_f]Nora[/name_f]) or absolutely mismatched (like [name_f]Stella[/name_f] and [name_f]Magdalena[/name_f] or [name_f]Deborah[/name_f] and [name_f]Ava[/name_f]). I prefer these that have the same feel, but are different, like [name_f]Clara[/name_f] and [name_f]Alice[/name_f] or [name_m]Archer[/name_m] and [name_u]River[/name_u].
[name_u]Arya[/name_u] and [name_f]Ayla[/name_f] are a lot more similar than [name_m]David[/name_m] and [name_f]Darlene[/name_f]. But, no, I don’t think it matters that much in the long run. It would matter to me when building a sibset, but in the grand scheme of things they will only be children who live in the same home and are introduced as a ‘set’ for a very short period in their lives. I was friends with a girl in elementary school whose name was Demitria and her older brother’s name was [name_m]Demetrius[/name_m]. I always thought that was ridiculous! Her parents effectively named them the same name, just male and female version of it. I find it very hard to understand why anyone would do that. There must be at least one other name they like, right? [name_f]My[/name_f] BFF’s mother is named [name_f]Laura[/name_f]. Her parents always wanted a son named [name_u]Loren[/name_u] (it was a family name, I’m pretty sure), but they had a daughter so they settled for naming her [name_f]Laura[/name_f] instead…then later they had a son…and named him [name_u]Loren[/name_u] anyway. I understand their reasoning a little better than [name_m]Demetrius[/name_m] and Demitria, but still…I wouldn’t do that!
[name_m]Josh[/name_m] and [name_f]Emily[/name_f]/[name_f]Katie[/name_f], [name_u]Aiden[/name_u] and [name_u]Madison[/name_u], and [name_m]Jacob[/name_m]/[name_m]Jackson[/name_m] and [name_f]Emma[/name_f]/[name_f]Isabella[/name_f] -type sib set. They just say, “yeah, we just grabbed a too ten name at the last minute” to me. Sound-alike and completely androgynous sets annoy me too but I see more of the top names than anything else.
Hix, Chenoa (can-OH-uh), [name_u]Lindsay[/name_u] - two almost unheard names with one super popular name, which drives me crazy, and
[name_u]Morgan[/name_u], [name_u]Logan[/name_u], and [name_u]Jordan[/name_u] - all sound like basically the same name to me
While of course it doesn’t matter much in the long run as to the kind of people they’ll be, I have several “rules” for my own sib sets which revolve around making each name different enough from the others. I like distinct individual names in sib sets.
No repeated first letters. If #1 is named [name_u]Michael[/name_u], no more M names. except for maybe twins.
No similar endings. If #1 is [name_f]Maria[/name_f], no more names ending in “a”.
Ha wow so there are a lot of preferences out there towards sib sets…I agree I also don’t like names that seem pulled off the top 10 list…especially when there are more than two kids. Hahaha Hix, Chenoa and [name_u]Lindsay[/name_u]…wonder how they came up with that. I also agree about names with the exact same endings. Thanks for your opinions everyone!!
[name_f]My[/name_f] sisters are named [name_f]Katherine[/name_f], [name_u]Allison[/name_u], [name_f]Rebecca[/name_f], [name_f]Caroline[/name_f], [name_f]Johanna[/name_f], and myself, [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]. I think our names fit together pretty well but that might be just because I’m used to hearing them together.
I dislike sibsets that mix different type of names, for example: [name_m]Nero[/name_m] and [name_f]Lillian[/name_f]. These names just don’t sound like they fit together to me. Of course you can always do whatever you want, in the end it doesn’t really matter.
I don’t mind names that have different styles, as a sibset; I’d just use my favourite names regardless of style. But I don’t like really matchy names, or a really popular name with an unusual name, I always think that I’d hate to be the sibling with the popular name.
I kind of agree with the same ending thing as well, luckily most of the names I love have different endings. I find -a endings a lot easier to deal with, because it’s such a common ending for girls names especially, and I tend to say the -a quite quickly, so it’s not as noticeable. So two -a names are fine, two -ix or -elle names, not so great.
I love a lot of names starting with P, so I can’t say much about the same first letter sibsets, but I don’t like it when all the names have the same letter. It’s particularly bad if it’s a sibset of more than 2.
Personally, I probably wouldn’t give two children names starting with the same letter. But I might if they weren’t next to each other or a really strong unusual letter (so my current children are A,V, and T, I’d like one more child and for the next one I wouldn’t use T (two Ts in a row) or V (too strong a letter) but I might use A).
I don’t have a problem with ending them in the same letter (both my girls end in a) but I’m not sure I would do another “ia” ending as I already have one of those.
I also don’t really like broken patterns - so once I had two daughters ending in a I really wanted the third ending in a also. But I got a boy and he ends in y, so if I had one more girl it would either be another a ending to match the girls or y to match the boy.
I can’t think of any sibsets that I strongly dislike, except for really matchy matchy ones. [name_f]My[/name_f] favourites are ones that fit together nicely but aren’t too similar.
I know a family who own a chocolate company. They had two kids and called them [name_m]William[/name_m] & [name_m]Charles[/name_m]. [name_m]Willy[/name_m] & [name_u]Charlie[/name_u].
I think the names in its self are very handsome and timeless, but named out of irony instead of preference? Although, it does amuse me.
I also know a [name_m]Raymond[/name_m], Kirstee, [name_f]Karley[/name_f] (car-[name_u]LEE[/name_u]), Tearna (tee-AR-nuh) & Tahliya (tar-[name_u]LEE[/name_u]-yuh). Hmm…
I know a [name_f]Kassie[/name_f] (G) and [name_u]Kasey[/name_u] (b) and I’ve always thought they were really close.
Not really intentional but my husbands friend has a girl called [name_u]Madison[/name_u] from a previous relationship and married a woman with a daughter called [name_u]Addison[/name_u]. [name_u]Madison[/name_u] and [name_u]Addison[/name_u] in the same house!
Through a friend, I know of a [name_u]Jayden[/name_u] (b) and [name_u]Mayson[/name_u] (g) which I’ve always thought was super trendy.
[name_f]My[/name_f] neighbor has three daughters, [name_f]Maisy[/name_f], [name_f]Molly[/name_f] and [name_f]Milly[/name_f]. All nice names but far too similar.
Daughter number 4 is due in a few months…
Ok, I actually know these sibsets personally, so I’m writing “1” instead of “L” so that nobody gets offended if they randomly decide to google themselves and their siblings in the future.
[name_f]Sienna[/name_f], Ca1eigh, [name_f]Emma[/name_f] and 1iam
Ka1yna, Kay1a, [name_u]Kieran[/name_u], and [name_u]Quinn[/name_u]
[name_f]Barbara[/name_f] and [name_u]Reese[/name_u] (No L’s to replace there, oh well)
I know a family with two kids, [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] and [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f]. [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] goes by [name_u]Alex[/name_u], and [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] goes by [name_u]Lexi[/name_u]. I think its kind of weird. I dont think siblings should have names too similar.
