What is the most overused name in your opinion? I made this thread because I always hear people talking about how there’s so many Olivias and Isabellas, yet I’ve only met two Olivias and one [name_f]Isabella[/name_f]. It’ll be interesting to see which names are popular (to the point of being annoying) to each [name_u]Berry[/name_u].
I think mine are [name_f]Emily[/name_f] and [name_u]Aidan[/name_u]. It seems like every girl I know has the name [name_f]Emily[/name_f] (I can easily think of eight) and everyone I know has a son named [name_u]Aidan[/name_u], although I don’t know an [name_u]Aidan[/name_u] over the age of ten.
For me, [name_f]Nevaeh[/name_f] for sure. That name just exploded from out of the blue and I just don’t understand the appeal - but its everywhere in my town! I’ve come across close to a dozen Nevaehs, all aged around 2-5 years old, but in over 20 years I’ve only come across one or two [name_f]Isabella[/name_f]/[name_f]Olivia[/name_f]/[name_m]Jack[/name_m]/[name_m]Ethan[/name_m] and [name_m]ZERO[/name_m] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m]/[name_u]Mason[/name_u]/[name_m]William[/name_m]/[name_m]Elijah[/name_m]/[name_f]Sophia[/name_f], I don’t know how thats possible
I have honestly lost count of how many Charlottes I know, but definitely more than eight, and almost all of them are not pleasant so I have been completely put off the Name!!
I think it is a bit hard to discuss in a large scale (as you mention, despite the numbers, we may only personally know a few people with the most popular names). In my area, I think there are lots of Emmas, Nevaehs, Brantleys, Aidans (tack on every single potential variation, too, because there are countless numbers of them), and Madisions. Everyone repeats the same few names.
Definitely [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f] and [name_u]Michael[/name_u]. The only two names I am honestly tired of hearing. Most of the top names, and those berries complain are overused, I barely hear the name (except here) or known any. Today’s popularity charts are nothing like the top names on the charts a few decades ago.
for kids under 5 [name_f]Ayla[/name_f]/[name_f]Layla[/name_f], I know about 4 of them (and I’m not around little kids very much). I don’t really know many little boys a the moment (everyone I know has girls!), but I know that names like [name_u]Jace[/name_u] and [name_m]Zane[/name_m] are popular here.
Where I live, it’s definitely [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] “[name_u]Alex[/name_u]” for boys. For girls, I know dozens with “[name_f]Em[/name_f]” names: [name_f]Emma[/name_f], [name_f]Emily[/name_f], [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f], [name_f]Emelyn[/name_f], and just [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] (and [name_f]Emi[/name_f]). Also, I know a ridiculous number of girls named [name_f]Kiana[/name_f].
[name_f]Lily[/name_f] for girls, [name_u]Aidan[/name_u] for boys, and anything ending in a -lee/ley for both ([name_u]Riley[/name_u], [name_u]Presley[/name_u], etc.).
For , it’s [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]. Across my family and my SO’s and THREE countries, almost every new daughter has been named [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]. Not to mention friend’s kids. In the last 4 years, I know of at least 9 being born. That’s in my circle alone lol
In my area, it’s [name_m]Nathan[/name_m] for boys, and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f], [name_f]Ava[/name_f] and [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] for girls.
At school, the most popular names in my year were [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] (3), [name_u]Lisa[/name_u] (3), [name_f]Emily[/name_f] (8) and [name_f]Rhea[/name_f] (7). For boys, I know lots of [name_m]Georges[/name_m] and a few Jameses.
The most popular name for my classmates, by a large margin, was [name_u]Michael[/name_u]. In my elementary school class of 50 there were 8 Michaels. There were even more by the time we got to high school and the class was 250. For girls maybe [name_f]Katie[/name_f]. There were a lot of Katies but they all had different long forms.
In my adult life I know SO MANY Lilys. And I know 3 men who go by [name_u]Jay[/name_u], again all with different long forms.
For names that are more current still [name_u]James[/name_u] and [name_m]Arthur[/name_m]. [name_f]Emily[/name_f] , [name_u]Taylor[/name_u] for girls
When I was growing up it was [name_f]Melissa[/name_f], [name_f]Tammy[/name_f], [name_u]Robin[/name_u], [name_u]Michael[/name_u], [name_m]Kevin[/name_m], [name_m]Ron[/name_m], [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Robert[/name_m]
I’ve seen several Isabellas and Olivias, all babies and toddlers. Although I think the most overused name will soon be [name_f]Emma[/name_f], mostly because it’s in the top 10 of nearly every English-speaking and European country. From the older generation, I think [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] is very bland and plain and everywhere.
