Most Popular Names in Denmark in 2013

A couple of days ago the list of the top fifty names given to children in 2013 was released and I thought it would be fun to post the top twenty-five (because posting all fifty would just be excruciatingly long, I’ll include a link to the entire list in the bottom):

The format I will use is (with fear of making it all quite boring and confusing – if it is, I do apologise): spot on the list name (how many children received the name spot on the list last year)

These are actually quite boring, there’s a lot of repetition from last year’s list. It’s the remaining twenty-five that’s exciting, therefore I recommend you to check out the FULL TOP 50 LIST

Also here’s my thread from last year, if anyone is interested.

Wow, the Danish have amazing taste, in my opinion. So many of my favourites are on those lists- I love it.
These are my favourites:

Boys: [name_m]Frederik[/name_m], [name_m]Magnus[/name_m], [name_m]Christian[/name_m], [name_u]Elias[/name_u], [name_m]Mads[/name_m], [name_m]Felix[/name_m], [name_m]Mathias[/name_m], [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], [name_u]August[/name_u], [name_m]Albert[/name_m], [name_m]Simon[/name_m], [name_m]Alfred[/name_m], [name_m]Marius[/name_m], [name_m]Tobias[/name_m], [name_m]Marcus[/name_m], [name_m]Arthur[/name_m], [name_m]Theodor[/name_m], [name_m]Philip[/name_m].

Girls: [name_f]Ida[/name_f], [name_f]Josefine[/name_f], [name_f]Alma[/name_f], [name_f]Mathilde[/name_f], Alberte, [name_f]Agnes[/name_f], [name_f]Frida[/name_f], [name_f]Mille[/name_f], Vigga, [name_f]Luna[/name_f], [name_f]Asta[/name_f], [name_f]Esther[/name_f], [name_f]Nanna[/name_f], [name_f]Malou[/name_f].

Mmm [name_f]Mathilde[/name_f], [name_f]Alma[/name_f], and [name_u]Elias[/name_u] are lovely. Vigga, [name_f]Malou[/name_f], [name_f]Silje[/name_f], [name_m]Marius[/name_m], [name_m]Laurits[/name_m], [name_m]Bertram[/name_m]! It blows me away that [name_m]Valdemar[/name_m] is at #23 and [name_u]Storm[/name_u] at #32. Also Alberthe at #20 on the girls’ list, and [name_m]Albert[/name_m] at #40 on the boys’? What’s that all about? [name_m]Mads[/name_m]… pronounced like “mahss?”

@[name_f]Emma[/name_f]: [name_m]Mads[/name_m] is pronounced “mahss” or “MAZ” indeed  Alberte is a very common name and has been steady on this list for years (not that I quite see the appeal, but the general [name_u]Dane[/name_u] apparently does). Vigga is actually quite a jumper, went from #53 to #28 on a year – I love it.

Thanks for sharing! It’s interesting to see the similarities and differences with my own country (US). Can you tell me more about Lærke? One of my nicknames is [name_m]Larka[/name_m], is it pronounced similarly? And [name_f]Luna[/name_f] at 48? [name_m]How[/name_m] fun.

What’s the story behind [name_u]Storm[/name_u]?

I am so sorry, I realised I just abandoned this thread – I’m the worst.

Sure  Lærke is the Danish word for lark and is pronounced like this. I’m not entirely sure as to how [name_m]Larka[/name_m] is pronounced but when I say Lærke with an English accent, it comes out as I think [name_m]Larka[/name_m] is pronounced

I don’t really know. It has the same meaning in Danish as it in English. It’s one of those names that started out as a proper Copenhagen-hipster name and suddenly one year it just boomed (even more extreme than Vigga this year) and now it’s difficult not to bump into a tiny [name_u]Storm[/name_u] on a daily basis

Thanks for sharing, I love seeing popularity lists from other countries.

I really like the following names from the top 25 (I’ve bolded my favourites):
[name_m]William[/name_m], [name_m]Frederik[/name_m], [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], [name_m]Oscar[/name_m], [name_m]Magnus[/name_m], [name_m]Alexander[/name_m], [name_m]Felix[/name_m], [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] and [name_u]August[/name_u].

[name_f]Ida[/name_f], [name_f]Freja[/name_f], [name_f]Anna[/name_f], [name_f]Mathilde[/name_f] and [name_f]Agnes[/name_f].

And these are all lovely from the bottom 25:
[name_m]Alfred[/name_m], [name_m]Tobias[/name_m], [name_m]Theodor[/name_m] and [name_m]Arthur[/name_m].

[name_f]Astrid[/name_f], [name_f]Luna[/name_f] and [name_f]Esther[/name_f].

Woo! Honestly I don’t like it. Sorry! I’m just sad that [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] and [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] has names that are so high up. But it doesn’t bother me too much.
I can definitely see that most of the names are consistent. [name_f]Emilie[/name_f] was even popular when I was born.

Thanks for sharing. [name_f]My[/name_f] cousin who is from Denmark just named his new daughter [name_f]Karla[/name_f]. I had no idea that it’s a popular name there because it is pretty uncommon here in the US.
