Movies, songs or books...

that influenced your love of a name. I was watching Across the Universe again and realized that the only reason I like [name]Jude[/name] and [name]Max[/name] is because of the movie and Beattles song. Same with [name]Lucy[/name] for Across the Universe and [name]Narnia[/name]. I like [name]Edmund[/name] much better for [name]Narnia[/name].

Frode, on my #1 boy name, is the name Tolkien used to name [name]Frodo[/name]. I love it not only for the sound and meaning, but also for that connection since Tolkien was the author that got me into [name]Fantasy[/name] and inspired me to write for the first time.

I like [name]Artemus[/name]/[name]Artemis[/name] because of my favorite book series… and some obscure names that the author probably made up because those books have influenced me so much…names like Drizzt, Bruenor…[name]Regis[/name]…

I like [name]Helena[/name] not only for the mythology, but also for the MCR song.

So, does anyone else have any experiences like that? I’ll probably think of others as I go along.

[name]Caspian[/name]! I love this name and it was first introduced to me through C.S. [name]Lewis[/name]. As well as the name [name]Sophie[/name] from my favourite book by [name]Christopher[/name] [name]Moore[/name].

Oh yes [name]Caspian[/name]! I agree. [name]Caspian[/name] is a name I never thought of before [name]Narnia[/name] but I love it now.

If I can cheat a bit, [name]Damien[/name] and [name]Griffin[/name] are names I used in my own novel and I never cared for them before they became personally connected to my characters. Same with [name]Marietta[/name] and Alsandair for the novel I’m working on now

A lot of my names, actually. Most of the Biblical names are obviously inspired by my faith ([name]Hannah[/name], [name]Rachel[/name], [name]Eve[/name], [name]Joshua[/name], [name]Daniel[/name], [name]Samuel[/name], [name]Ezra[/name], [name]Caleb[/name], [name]Joseph[/name], [name]Elijah[/name], etc.). [name]Isabelle[/name] I got from Alias; [name]Olivia[/name] I love for [name]Shakespeare[/name] (as I do for [name]Helena[/name]!), [name]Jack[/name] I love from The Importance of Being [name]Earnest[/name]; [name]Spencer[/name] I began to love when I saw Criminal Minds (which, surprisingly, I no longer watch, but I still think [name]Spencer[/name] [name]Reid[/name] is a pretty cool association, haha); [name]Edmund[/name] I love for the Chronicles of [name]Narnia[/name] (and [name]Caspian[/name]! And [name]Peter[/name]!); [name]August[/name] I love for Auggie in Covert Affairs; I also love [name]Olivia[/name] for [name]Olivia[/name] [name]Dunham[/name] in Fringe–she was also nn’d [name]Olive[/name] when she was young, which might be why I love [name]Olivia[/name] nn [name]Olive[/name]/[name]Liv[/name] so much!.. I feel like I have literary, musical, and TV associations to just about every one of my combos, haha. Not to mention family and Biblical.

lol I already knew you had a ton of them [name]Ash[/name]! All good reasons to have names on your list. I like a lot of names in the Wicked series too, not for my real life kids, but I think they’d make cool names for someone else’s kids. Elphaba and Liir for sure.

I have realized that many of my names came from my favorite books! I went through a period this this year where I wanted to reread all my favorites and was super surprised to find [name]Maisy[/name], [name]Gabriel[/name], [name]Donovan[/name] and [name]William[/name] as main characters. I probably think about these wonderful stories far too long after the book is finished and the characters stay with me and I don’t even know it.

A lot of names from my childhood reads–[name]Fern[/name] from [name]Charlotte[/name]'s [name]Web[/name]. [name]Meg[/name] from A Wrinkle in Time. [name]Alice[/name], of course. [name]Edmund[/name], [name]Peter[/name] and [name]Lucy[/name] from [name]Narnia[/name] (I wonder why not [name]Susan[/name]?). [name]Sorrel[/name], [name]Holly[/name], [name]Mark[/name], [name]Pauline[/name] and [name]Posy[/name] from [name]Noel[/name] Streatfeild’s Shoes books. [name]Adam[/name] from [name]Adam[/name] of the Road. [name]Beatrice[/name] and [name]Ramona[/name]. [name]Violet[/name] from the Boxcar Children. [name]Meg[/name] again, from [name]Little[/name] Women. [name]Martha[/name], [name]Jane[/name] and [name]Mark[/name], [name]Lydia[/name] and [name]Kip[/name] from Half [name]Magic[/name] and other eager books. [name]Colin[/name] from The [name]Secret[/name] Garden. [name]Toby[/name] from a book about a boy in the circus. And, I swear, I have loved [name]Jill[/name] as long as I can remember–[name]Jack[/name] and [name]Jill[/name]?

[name]Bodhi[/name] from Point break…
[name]Edward[/name] from Twilight!
And [name]Tristan[/name] from Legends of the fall

I’ll agree with [name]Alice[/name] and [name]Meg[/name]. While I don’t like [name]Meg[/name], I have a certain fondness of it due to those books. And I also have to wonder…why don’t I like [name]Peter[/name] or [name]Susan[/name] from [name]Narnia[/name]?

[name]Amy[/name], I love [name]Tristan[/name] and [name]Isolde[/name]…from [name]Tristan[/name] and [name]Isolde[/name].

And [name]Guenevere[/name] and [name]Arthur[/name] from reading the mythology.

[name]Don[/name]'t even get started on mythology! When I was a teenager I went through a stage where all my future children would have had mythological names. [name]Don[/name]'t get me wrong, I still love the names, and I’d love to meet a little [name]Freya[/name], [name]Artemis[/name] or [name]Perseus[/name], a family that sounded like roll call on Mount [name]Olympus[/name] would be a bit much

lol All of my children will have mythological names somewhere, but that’s because I worship the Greek gods and my husband the Norse. They’re mostly middles though. Frode, [name]Griffin[/name] (not the original myth spelling but it counts), Lykaion, [name]Loki[/name], [name]Persephone[/name], [name]Elysia[/name], [name]Signe[/name], [name]Zephyrine[/name] (female version of [name]Zephyr[/name]), [name]Sylvana[/name] (not mythological but connects to [name]Pan[/name]), [name]Saga[/name].

I do think if the first names were all myth names, it would sound ridiculous, but in the middle, it’s a subtle nod to my heritage, religion, and myths that help to shape me

Oh, don’t get me started… too many! I think half the names I love are from my favourite literary characters! I’ll only list the ones I probably wouldn’t love without the song or book:
[name]George[/name] & [name]Emma[/name] ([name]Jane[/name] [name]Austen[/name]'s [name]Emma[/name])
[name]Natasha[/name] ([name]Rufus[/name] [name]Wainwright[/name] song)
[name]Constance[/name] & [name]Oliver[/name] (Lady Chatterley’s Lover)
[name]Ella[/name], Otterley, [name]Evangeline[/name] (Cocteau Twins songs)
[name]Kitty[/name], [name]Daisy[/name] & [name]Lewis[/name] (one of my favourite bands)
[name]Lexie[/name], [name]Innes[/name] & [name]Elina[/name] (The Hand That First Held Mine)
Britomart, Florimell, Canacee, Gloriana, Calidore, [name]Cambell[/name], [name]Amoret[/name], Belphoebe, Cambina & [name]Una[/name] (The Faerie [name]Queen[/name])
[name]Janie[/name] (Their Eyes Were Watching God)
[name]Westley[/name] & [name]Inigo[/name] (The [name]Princess[/name] [name]Bride[/name])
[name]Eowyn[/name], Eomer & Faramir ([name]Lord[/name] of the Rings)
[name]Olive[/name] ([name]Little[/name] Miss [name]Sunshine[/name])
[name]Holly[/name] (Breakfast at [name]Tiffany[/name]'s)

I agree. I’ve noticed your names before, and I enjoy them. My teenaged self knew no restraint though. I think I imagined triplets named [name]Artemis[/name] [name]Persephone[/name], [name]Athena[/name] [name]Phoebe[/name] and [name]Aphrodite[/name] [name]Penelope[/name] who had a whole slew of siblings named [name]Hermes[/name] [name]Apollo[/name] and the like. I still like all the names, but a light hand, like yours, is definitely called for.

My favorite names from a book are [name]Elinor[/name] and [name]Marianne[/name]. I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Jane[/name] [name]Austen[/name], and that spelling of [name]Elinor[/name] is beautiful. Wish I could use them!

Like other people have said, I fell in love with the name [name]Caspian[/name] after watching the [name]Narnia[/name] movies! It’s one of my favorite boy names now. It might just be because I had a crush on him though, lol. I like the name [name]Edmund[/name] too, it was the first time I had ever heard it.

I find Greek mythology really interesting so I like a lot of the mythological names.

[name]Gabriel[/name] and [name]Fiona[/name] (The Giver, my favorite childhood book)
[name]Orion[/name] and [name]Diana[/name] (I was never brave enough to consider [name]Artemis[/name])
[name]Elliot[/name], [name]Ian[/name], [name]Grant[/name], [name]Marek[/name], [name]Claire[/name], [name]Julia[/name] (various [name]Michael[/name] [name]Crichton[/name] books)
[name]Arwen[/name], [name]Peregrine[/name], and Aragorn (LOTR)
[name]James[/name], [name]Lily[/name], [name]Sirius[/name], [name]Luna[/name], [name]Oliver[/name], [name]Lavendar[/name], etc. (HP)
[name]Desmond[/name], [name]Sawyer[/name], [name]Liam[/name], [name]Austen[/name], [name]Juliette[/name] (tv’s LOST)
=]

Let’s see. I’m sure there are at least 1,001 but these are off the top of my head.

[name]Coraline[/name] from the book of the same name (DD’s middle :D)
[name]Edmund[/name] - [name]Narnia[/name]
[name]Neil[/name] - [name]Neil[/name] Gaiman
[name]Jude[/name] - The Beatles
[name]Helena[/name] - Bonham [name]Carter[/name]
[name]Asha[/name] - Game of Thrones
[name]Theon[/name] - Game of Thrones (too bad he’s a little sh*t, or I think I would actually possibly use this one)
[name]Perrin[/name] - Wheel of Time
[name]Ernest[/name] - Importance of Being [name]Ernest[/name]
[name]Aurelia[/name] - [name]Love[/name] Actually

ETA:

[name]Asher[/name] & [name]Jonas[/name]- amydomsmom reminded me where I first heard these aside from the bible - I had a copy of The Giver that was worn to bits from reading it so much

[name]Shakespeare[/name], Greek mythology and [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name]. [name]Shakespeare[/name]- [name]Othello[/name] and [name]Cordelia[/name], Greek Mythology- [name]Atlas[/name] and [name]Persephone[/name] and [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name]- [name]Hermione[/name].

JKRowling’s very creative and bold choices definitely influenced me. Though there aren’t many of hers I’d actually use, she made me think differently about children with “weirder” names. And [name]Molly[/name] and [name]Arthur[/name] are definitely in my long list of favorites because of her.

There’s a woman named [name]Glory[/name] in [name]Gilead[/name] and I think that’s lovely! And [name]Gilead[/name] would make an awesome name as well.

I like a lot of the more creative Biblical / religiously themed names as well: [name]Gideon[/name], [name]Levi[/name], Aiman, [name]Calvin[/name], [name]Thessaly[/name], [name]Rufus[/name], Verily, [name]Lilith[/name] (amazing book!), [name]Eve[/name] (love [name]Christmas[/name]!)

There are so many books I adore, but not many of them I’d consider their characters names for a kid mainly because they become the characters in my head and there aren’t many characters I love enough to hear their name every day  Maybe Ender, but not super fond of his name! [name]Austen[/name]'s characters as well, but her names are so normal that it wouldn’t feel like a literary nod.

I’d probably be more likely to use an author’s name–[name]Thomas[/name] (for a Kempis), [name]Jane[/name] (for [name]Austen[/name]), etc.
