I really like Muddy for a boy but I am not sure if I want to use it as a full name or a nickname. What would be your opinion?
To me it sounds like a nickname.
Full name options:
[name_m]Clyde[/name_m] (Derives from [name_f]Clodagh[/name_f], meaning muddy)
[name_m]Brody[/name_m] (Irish meaning: from the muddy place)
Murdoch (nn muddy?)
[name_u]Murphy[/name_u] (nn muddy?)
[name_m]Maddox[/name_m]
[name_m]Madden[/name_m]
[name_m]Maddoc[/name_m]
[name_m]McDonald[/name_m]
[name_m]Mortimer[/name_m]
[name_m]Muhammad[/name_m]
[name_m]Mordecai[/name_m]
[name_m]Murdock[/name_m]
I’m all for interesting and unique names, but Muddy isn’t a name. It can be a nickname I guess, but why? It’s not particularly endearing. But then again Foggy can be a nickname for [name_m]Franklin[/name_m] so I guess it could work if it had a longer more legitimate name attached.
Muddy, as in “His name is Mud!” No, just no.
That’s a good name for a goat, pig, or a dog.
Nope. I like rare, uncommon names, but Muddy a) doesn’t sound like a name (maybe a nickname), b) the meaning is not great either. Sorry. I hate when people suggest kids can be bullied because of a name (they are usually talking about perfectly normal names), but this sounds like a mean nickname a kid got because he was dirty or something. If you really like the nickname, I like kipperbo1’s ideas.
Definitely better as a nickname! I can’t imagine a child actually named Muddy having a good time at school.
I think any M name could work e.g. [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] nn Muddy would still make sense. Or you could go for a closer sounding name like Murdoch (mentioned above). I know a [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] nn Moogle, with nicknames anything goes!
[name_m]Buddy[/name_m], [name_m]Rudd[/name_m] or [name_u]Rudy[/name_u] might be a good compromise if you really want to use something as a full name. I’m not wholly convinced by [name_m]Buddy[/name_m] as a given name, but it’s not totally unheard of.
Can’t think of a full name that hasn’t been suggested, but I dislike it as a full name. Sounds nickname-like, like a pet’s name and the meaning isn’t attractive. What about [name_u]Mattie[/name_u], [name_f]Maddie[/name_f], [name_u]Mandy[/name_u], [name_m]Monty[/name_m], [name_m]Monte[/name_m]?
Oh come on people, hasn’t anyone ever heard of Muddy Waters? Cultural amnesia, what a blight.
I don’t find Muddy endearing at all. Definitely better as a nickname, though, if anything at all.
It’s a cute nickname for a rowdy little boy but not appropriate for a grown up.
Muddy Waters was a stage name, his real name was [name_u]McKinley[/name_u].
Might be a reason to consider [name_u]McKinley[/name_u] nn Muddy though, that could be cute if your a Muddy Waters fan.
Seconding this.
I don’t say it often, but other than the above scenario, I would just shake my head. Muddy? Not a name to me, and if someone were to make it a name, I’d just be wondering why.
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you like it because of Muddy Waters? Or? I think its better as a nn. Otherwise I think your setting yourself up to hear a lot of jokes about how dirty your son is.
I think I’ll decide against it.
