[name_m]How[/name_m] bad is it? It’s a family name so please don’t tear me to shreds, haha.
I’m not a fan, but it could make a nice middle name
[name_u]Murphy[/name_u] is not that bad. A lot of our family surnames would not work, not even as a middle name. I personally would use [name_u]Murphy[/name_u] as a middle name but can imagine it as a first name. I personally feel it has a similar feel to names like [name_u]Stanley[/name_u], [name_m]Griffin[/name_m], [name_u]Sheldon[/name_u], [name_m]Harold[/name_m], [name_m]Leonard[/name_m], etc.
I’m not a fan myself but maybe yes in the middle as sunkissedchild said.
Feels very Scottish. I know a few people called [name_u]Murphy[/name_u]. Prefer the name as a middle name teamed with something strong like [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m] or [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m].
It isn’t bad at all. I had a relative named [name_u]James[/name_u] Murphree/[name_u]Murphy[/name_u] who went by Murph his entire life. (He was born before birth certificates were required, so even he wasn’t sure what his middle name was supposed to be. Either way it was a family surname that no one seemed to remember the exact spelling of.) [name_u]Murphy[/name_u] is upbeat and fun. I like it, especially if it’s a family surname.
I like it and I would use it as a first!
The meaning (sea warrior) is strong, rugged, manly and I really like the imagery it conjures. I think [name_u]Murphy[/name_u] is strong enough by itself as a first name. And I don’t see the names [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m] and [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m] as strong names (because of the people I associate them with). I actually have the opposite feeling, I like [name_u]Murphy[/name_u] [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m], [name_u]Murphy[/name_u] [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m] or [name_u]Murphy[/name_u] with a different middle much more. I think it sounds great with another Irish name in the middle ([name_u]Murphy[/name_u] [name_m]Callen[/name_m], [name_u]Murphy[/name_u] [name_m]Donovan[/name_m], [name_u]Murphy[/name_u] [name_m]Alan[/name_m], [name_u]Murphy[/name_u] [name_m]Breccan[/name_m], [name_u]Murphy[/name_u] [name_m]Callahan[/name_m], [name_u]Murphy[/name_u] [name_m]Calhoun[/name_m], [name_u]Murphy[/name_u] [name_u]Collins[/name_u], [name_u]Murphy[/name_u] [name_u]Flynn[/name_u], [name_u]Murphy[/name_u] [name_m]Kellen[/name_m], [name_u]Murphy[/name_u] [name_u]Kieran[/name_u], [name_u]Murphy[/name_u] [name_m]Killian[/name_m], [name_u]Murphy[/name_u] [name_m]Lorcan[/name_m], I could go on). [name_u]Murphy[/name_u] isn’t as popular as [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m] or [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m] either, which makes it more appealing in my book!
Not a fan. It’s a surname, but if you must use it, then it’d be best as a middle name.
I actually really like it and the fact that it’s a family name makes it that much better! I think it’s usable as a first or middle
I always think of [name_u]Murphy[/name_u] [name_m]Brown[/name_m]
[name_u]Murphy[/name_u] is a family name for us also, and I think it is totally usable as a first.
I knew a really nice golden retriever named [name_u]Murphy[/name_u] when I was younger, so while I do have a good association, it’s a bit of a “dog” name to me. I think ti could make a cute middle, though. I don’t think it’s bad at all.
I really love [name_u]Murphy[/name_u] and it’s meaning. Bonus that it is a family name for you. The one thing that holds me back from naming a child [name_u]Murphy[/name_u] is the whole [name_u]Murphy[/name_u]'s [name_m]Law[/name_m] thing. It is a top contender for our next dog though. [name_u]Murphy[/name_u] is a very cute and handsome name. If you can get past the [name_u]Murphy[/name_u]'s [name_m]Law[/name_m] association, go for it.
While I personally wouldn’t use it as a first name, and I think it would be great as a middle name to honor the family members, I admit I would find it ADORABLE if I met a little baby named [name_u]Murphy[/name_u]!
It’s not a bad name at all.
I do think of our friend Murph who was wild and his black shiny dog [name_f]Mindy[/name_f] who devoured [name_f]Bama[/name_f] pecan pies in mid-air.
I also think of our local pub, [name_u]Murphy[/name_u]'s.
But it is not a bad name at all, just has a lot of Irish energy to it.
Haha, yes, see the [name_u]Murphy[/name_u]'s [name_m]Law[/name_m] thing is my only concern. It’s a common saying in my family, which may make it odd, since it’s also our old family name (great grandmother’s maiden name.)
Thanks everyone, I’ve just started digging around in my family tree for names, so I’ve got [name_u]Logan[/name_u], [name_u]Murphy[/name_u], [name_m]Dempsey[/name_m], [name_m]Marshall[/name_m], [name_m]Wells[/name_m], [name_m]Smith[/name_m] and [name_u]Darby[/name_u].
It’s odd because the urph-sound I wouldn’t normally like I guess, but [name_u]Murphy[/name_u] is kind of cool.
