[name_u]Baby[/name_u] no. 3 is on her way and I’m a little confused! We have two sons, [name_m]Fredrick[/name_m] “[name_u]Ricky[/name_u]” and [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] “[name_u]Teddy[/name_u]”, and now we’ve been told that since she is going to be our last, that she needs a nickname ending in -y or she will feel left out.
What are your thoughts on this? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you have any suggestions?
No way! A matchy nickname is totally not necessary if the name you love can’t be shortened easily. It’s not even something I would prioritize, to be honest.
Maybe add another classic like [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] / [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f]? You could have the nicknames [name_f]Lizzy[/name_f] or [name_f]Libby[/name_f], if you do want to continue your y-nickname theme.
[name_f]Every[/name_f] name starting with [name_f]El[/name_f]- could have the nickname [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]:
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleonora[/name_f]
[name_f]Elena[/name_f]
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f]
Names that end in -lia could have said ending as a nickname:
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Amelia[/name_f] / [name_f]Amalia[/name_f]
[name_f]Cecilia[/name_f]
More quirky nicknames could be:
“[name_u]Rory[/name_u]” from [name_f]Aurora[/name_f]
“[name_f]Vi[/name_f]” from [name_f]Violet[/name_f]
“[name_u]Ren[/name_u]” from [name_f]Florence[/name_f]
“[name_u]Mattie[/name_u]” from [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
Or nicknames that are also used as standalones:
“[name_f]Tilda[/name_f]” for [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
“[name_f]Lena[/name_f]” or “[name_f]Mila[/name_f]” for [name_f]Milena[/name_f]
“[name_f]Cora[/name_f]” for [name_f]Coralie[/name_f]
“[name_f]Rose[/name_f] / [name_f]Rosie[/name_f]” for [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f]
“[name_f]Nora[/name_f]” for [name_f]Leonora[/name_f]
It depends what kind of nickname you’re looking for, since basically every name can have a cutesy nickname while not every name can have a “real” nickname.
I don’t know why somebody would say that to you? Weird. Definitely do not think that your daughter would need a nickname ending in Y. I feel like nicknames come naturally anyway.
[name_u]Love[/name_u] your boys names and nicknames! I don’t think her nickname needs to follow the same pattern! If she ends with a Y, should it also be 5 letters and not the first assumed nickname for the first name? ([name_f]IMO[/name_f] [name_m]Frederick[/name_m]'s first assumed nn is [name_u]Freddy[/name_u] and [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] would be [name_u]Theo[/name_u], but I like [name_u]Ricky[/name_u] and [name_u]Teddy[/name_u]! - Sorry if I’m wrong about that!) [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] nn [name_f]Maisy[/name_f] or Liney?
No, I don’t think NN’s need to be “on pattern” with siblings, especially since she’s a girl and they’re boys. Pick what you like. Her FN should probably not be something like super trendy and modern, and not be too popular a classic (so not [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]), but other than that, go with what you like!
If you want suggestions then giving us a few girls names you like would be helpful.
It would actually be refreshing to have her name not end in a Y.
Suggestions for [name_u]Ricky[/name_u] and [name_u]Teddy[/name_u]'s sister:
[name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] - [name_f]Andra[/name_f] not [name_u]Lexie[/name_u]
[name_f]Rebecca[/name_f] - [name_f]Becca[/name_f] or Bex not [name_f]Becky[/name_f]
[name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] - [name_f]Nessa[/name_f]
[name_f]Tessa[/name_f] - [name_f]Tess[/name_f]
[name_f]Jillian[/name_f] - [name_f]Jill[/name_f]
[name_f]Jocelyn[/name_f] - [name_u]Joss[/name_u]
[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] - [name_u]Dell[/name_u] not [name_f]Addie[/name_f]
[name_f]Julia[/name_f] or [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] - [name_u]Jules[/name_u]
[name_f]Cecelia[/name_f] - [name_f]Cece[/name_f]
I don’t think it needs to have a -y nn. [name_f]My[/name_f] older two daughters and niece all have names that end in -ey (completely unintentional) so when I was pregnant with #3 someone said that she should have an -ey too…that did NOT happen (I do call her Quinny a lot though).
Break it now if it’s not something you really want to do. A lot of the longer first names I like happen to have -ie/-y nicknames ([name_m]Frederick[/name_m]/[name_u]Freddie[/name_u], [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]/[name_u]Josie[/name_u], [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f]/[name_f]Evie[/name_f]…) and if I were to use them all, it’d be a coincidence.
You could do [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] “[name_f]Kate[/name_f]”.
