My brother just named his dog our top name!

I got an email yesterday with a picture of my step-brother and his new dog, who’s name is [name]Lilly[/name]! Our top name for the baby is [name]Lillian[/name] with nn [name]Lilly[/name]. We do have one other name we like a lot, [name]Brooke[/name], with [name]Lillian[/name] [name]Brooke[/name] being the top contender. I was planning on keeping [name]Brooke[/name] _____ for a back up name.

I am not mad at my step-brother, I just feel a little annoyed and let down, like the name is a lot less special now. My step-brother had no idea any of the names we were thinking about. The dog is almost a year old so it is possible that she came with that name. I don’t feel like I can ask him to change it, he has had her for a week or more and now told everyone the name. Maybe it’s more about that [name]Lillian[/name]/[name]Lily[/name]/[name]Liliana[/name] etc. is more popular than I am ok with.

My step-brother and [name]Lilly[/name] the dog live in a different state and we only see them about 2-3 times a year. But my whole family lives near him. So even if it doesn’t affect me a lot, it might be wierd for my family who spends a lot of time with him and the dog. My parents would have a grand-baby and grand-puppy with the same name! My husband didn’t seem to care at all when I told him, he sees my family even less than I do.

Anyways, kinda just wanted to vent here to people who might understand. [name]Do[/name] you think I should still use [name]Lillian[/name] nn [name]Lilly[/name]? Use the backup name, [name]Brooke[/name]? Come up with something totally new? Does [name]Brooke[/name] [name]Lillian[/name] sound ok? Sounds a little akward to me.

Thanks for reading/listening.

That is frustrating! I much prefer [name]Lillian[/name] [name]Brooke[/name] to [name]Brooke[/name] [name]Lillian[/name]! [name]Lillian[/name] is beautiful, classy name, and [name]Lilly[/name] is sweet. My vote is, if you love the name, use it! It would be a shame to have to give up a name you adore just because of a relative’s dog that lives miles away. Believe me, no one is going to think you named her after the dog! It would be different if the dog belonged to you : - ) If it really bugs you, then change it…but I don’t think it is an issue!

[name]Hope[/name] that makes you feel a little better : - )

Oh, that’s sad, [name]Molly[/name]. I’m so sorry. You could talk to your step-brother and see if he could change the dog’s name. It isn’t that hard to change a dog’s name. We changed our rescued dogs name from Cuddles to [name]Roxy[/name].
[name]Lily[/name]/[name]Lillian[/name] is a very popular name. If you want something less common but similar to [name]Lilly[/name]/[name]Lillian[/name], how about

[name]Adeline[/name] nn [name]Addie[/name]
[name]Caroline[/name]/[name]Carolina[/name] nn [name]Callie[/name]
[name]Cecily[/name] nn Cessie
[name]Edith[/name] nn [name]Edie[/name]
[name]Evelyn[/name] nn [name]Evie[/name] - but this is as popular as [name]Lillian[/name]/[name]Lilly[/name], I think.
[name]Frances[/name] nn [name]Francie[/name] - this is one of my very favorites!
[name]Harriet[/name] nn [name]Hattie[/name]
[name]Imogen[/name] nn Immie
[name]Josephine[/name] nn [name]Josie[/name]
[name]Lucinda[/name] nn [name]Lucy[/name] - I think [name]Lucy[/name] is just a pretty as [name]Lilly[/name]!
[name]Mary[/name] nn [name]Polly[/name] - I love [name]Mary[/name] [name]Jane[/name]. Retro.
[name]Matilda[/name] nn [name]Mattie[/name] or [name]Tillie[/name] - my daughter loves this one.
[name]Millicent[/name] nn [name]Milly[/name] - if you’re very brave!
[name]Penelope[/name] nn [name]Penny[/name] or [name]Nell[/name] - love it!
[name]Rosemary[/name] nn [name]Rosie[/name], [name]Polly[/name], [name]Maisie[/name]
[name]Susannah[/name] nn [name]Susie[/name], [name]Sanna[/name]
[name]Tessa[/name] nn [name]Tess[/name] or [name]Tessie[/name]
[name]Vivian[/name] nn [name]Vivi[/name] - love it!

Thanks [name]Susan[/name]. I commented on some of your great suggestions!
[name]Lily[/name]/[name]Lillian[/name] is a very popular name. If you want something less common but similar to [name]Lilly[/name]/[name]Lillian[/name], how about

[name]Adeline[/name] nn [name]Addie[/name] **Really like this, especially [name]Addie[/name], but I might like [name]Adele[/name] better

[name]Caroline[/name]/[name]Carolina[/name] nn [name]Callie[/name]
[name]Cecily[/name] nn Cessie
[name]Edith[/name] nn [name]Edie[/name]

[name]Evelyn[/name] nn [name]Evie[/name] - but this is as popular as [name]Lillian[/name]/[name]Lilly[/name], I think. **My grandmother’s name, was thinking about using as a mn, yes, it is pretty popular especially [name]Evie[/name] type names.

[name]Frances[/name] nn [name]Francie[/name] - this is one of my very favorites! **Like, but too unixex for me. [name]Francie[/name] is cute!

[name]Harriet[/name] nn [name]Hattie[/name] **[name]Love[/name], but DH said “too wierd”
[name]Imogen[/name] nn Immie - not a fan.
[name]Josephine[/name] nn [name]Josie[/name] - **like, but out cat’s name is [name]Joey[/name], a little to similar.

[name]Lucinda[/name] nn [name]Lucy[/name] - I think [name]Lucy[/name] is just a pretty as [name]Lilly[/name]! **Funny, my step-sister’s dog’s name is [name]Lucy[/name]! [name]Lucy[/name] and [name]Lilly[/name] are doggy cousins. We considered [name]Lucinda[/name] using nn [name]Cindy[/name] but now DH doesn’t like.

[name]Mary[/name] nn [name]Polly[/name] - I love [name]Mary[/name] [name]Jane[/name]. Retro. **I like [name]Jane[/name] and DH likes [name]Mary[/name], but don’t think [name]Mary[/name] [name]Jane[/name] would work for us.

[name]Matilda[/name] nn [name]Mattie[/name] or [name]Tillie[/name] - my daughter loves this one. **Like a lot, was on our earlier list, wonder what happened to it? I will bring it up again. [name]Love[/name] the nn [name]Mattie[/name].

[name]Millicent[/name] nn [name]Milly[/name] - if you’re very brave! **Nope, not brave enough.

[name]Penelope[/name] nn [name]Penny[/name] or [name]Nell[/name] - love it! **like ok, son’s name starts with P also, so that is not ok.
[name]Rosemary[/name] nn [name]Rosie[/name], [name]Polly[/name], [name]Maisie[/name]

[name]Susannah[/name] nn [name]Susie[/name], [name]Sanna[/name] **Sometimes I love this, other times I hate it, probaly not a good option then.
[name]Tessa[/name] nn [name]Tess[/name] or [name]Tessie[/name]
[name]Vivian[/name] nn [name]Vivi[/name] - love it! **One of my sister’s favorites so I don’t want to “steal” it.

Some others I found today:
Veroninca - but nn [name]Vera[/name] isn’t as cute as [name]Lilly[/name] or [name]Maddie[/name] etc.
[name]Avalon[/name] - maybe too out there, would be a cool mn.
[name]Jessamine[/name] nn [name]Jessie[/name] - I love this but DH says it’s not a real name (in other words, he has never heard it before therefore it doesn’t exsist).

Thanks again for your suggestions!

Awe, darn! I’m so sorry, [name]Molly[/name]! If you’re comfortable keeping [name]Lillian[/name] [name]Brooke[/name], I think you should, but if it bothers you, which would be understandable, it may be a good idea to go with something else. I thought that [name]Lillian[/name] [name]Brooke[/name] had a great flow, but I agree about [name]Brooke[/name] [name]Lillian[/name] not sounding quite right. :frowning:

I’m really sorry for repeating names off of [name]Susan[/name]'s amazing list! ([name]Hi[/name], [name]Susan[/name]!)

[name]Adelia[/name]
[name]Alice[/name]
[name]Amelia[/name]
[name]Adelaide[/name]
[name]Beatrice[/name]/[name]Beatrix[/name]
[name]Clementine[/name]
[name]Cleo[/name]
[name]Cora[/name]
[name]Celia[/name]
[name]Evangeline[/name]
[name]Eleanor[/name]
[name]Eliza[/name]
[name]Felicity[/name]
[name]Genevieve[/name]
[name]Josephine[/name]
[name]Lenore[/name]
[name]Louisa[/name]
[name]Lydia[/name]
[name]Mirabel[/name]
[name]Nora[/name]
[name]Penelope[/name]
[name]Rosaline[/name]
[name]Tabitha[/name]
[name]Vivian[/name]
[name]Willa[/name]

Again, I apologize for repeats!

If you choose not to stick with [name]Lillian[/name], I hope you find something you love! (Oh…You may also like [name]Jillian[/name], which is really close in sound to [name]Lillian[/name], and has the [name]Jilly[/name] nickname.)

Good luck!

I see the previous poster has already suggested, but I immediately thought [name]Lydia[/name] [name]Brooke[/name] when I read your post! I [name]LOVE[/name] the name [name]Lydia[/name], it’s similar to [name]Lillian[/name], and the nn Lydi or Liddy is cute [name]IMO[/name]

Yes, I do love [name]Jillian[/name] and it was actually my number one choice. But DH keeps saying [name]Gillian[/name] or [name]Gill[/name] (like the fish gill) whenever I mention it, and I am not ok with that. [name]Lillian[/name] was our compromise name between his [name]Lilly[/name] and my [name]Jillian[/name].

[name]Lydia[/name] is also a top choice for me but DH also doesn’t like it much. I especilly like [name]Lydia[/name] [name]Brooke[/name] nn Liddy. sigh maybe I can still convince him of [name]Lydia[/name].

[name]Lydia[/name] would be great!

Okay, I will think of some more.

Ha! Not brave enough to go for [name]Millicent[/name]? My husband hates [name]Millicent[/name]! But I know someone who has a baby niece named [name]Millicent[/name].

[name]Antonia[/name] nn [name]Nina[/name]
[name]Avalon[/name] would make a great middle name!
[name]Francine[/name], [name]Francesca[/name] nn [name]Francie[/name]
[name]Gwendolyn[/name] nn [name]Gwen[/name]
[name]Louisa[/name] nn [name]Lulu[/name]
[name]Minerva[/name] nn [name]Minnie[/name]
[name]Tatiana[/name] nn [name]Tati[/name], but [name]Tati[/name] does sound a bit too much like a body part. I know a girl with this name, and she loves her name.
[name]Winifred[/name] nn [name]Winnie[/name]
[name]Zandra[/name] nn [name]Zandie[/name]

It dose not really matter that your brother named his dog [name]Lilly[/name], maybe you could nn your [name]Lillian[/name] [name]Lily[/name] with one L. Also this might sound daft but your daughter might like having the same name as a dog. Maybe you could nn her [name]Ann[/name] or [name]Lil[/name]

[name]Henry[/name] is on the top of our list… and I had a beagle named [name]Henry[/name]. Although he’s no longer with us, I assume we’ll get “like the dog?” comments from my family, we just love the name too much to pass it up.
I don’t know, my personal opinion is that humans trump pets in the naming department. Maybe this comes from the fact that my uncle’s ex-wife changed her 3 year old dog’s name when she found out his neice (me) had the same name. If [name]Lillian[/name] nn [name]Lilly[/name] is what you intend to name your daughter, maybe you could tell your step-brother- he could be happy change the puppy’s name. And if not, who cares? Your family can call her [name]Lillian[/name] if thet really think it’s an issue, but I’m sure your daughter will become “the” [name]Lilly[/name] of the family.
BTW- I adore [name]Lydia[/name] “Liddy” [name]Brooke[/name] SO MUCH! If the puppy issue ends up being too big, I’m really going to push for this
Good luck!

People should name their animals obscure names so this kind of thing doesn’t happen! My cat is called Zucchini!

I think that a baby is definitely bigger than a dog, and will of course out live the dog. Therefore, if you want it, you use it. The question is whether you are comfortable using this name?

I’m sorry to hear that but that’s the style these days. [name]Molly[/name], [name]Bailey[/name], [name]Bella[/name], [name]Clara[/name], [name]Lilly[/name], [name]Claire[/name], [name]Maddie[/name]/[name]Maddy[/name] are all popular girls names and dogs names you just cant avoid it. I would use something different. Maybe a form of [name]Lillian[/name] which is a form of [name]Elizabeth[/name].

[name]Elizabeth[/name]
[name]Isabella[/name]
[name]Delilah[/name]
[name]Elise[/name]
[name]Eliza[/name]
[name]Liza[/name]
[name]Beth[/name]

and call her lily!

Oh, that’s right! I forgot that you were liking [name]Jillian[/name] a while ago.

I love [name]Lydia[/name] [name]Brooke[/name], and hope that he may begin to love it as much as you do.

Good luck!

Too funny!

If this were me, I would email my stepbrother and just level with him. I’d ask if he wouldn’t mind changing the dog’s name A [name]LITTLE[/name]. If it still ended in the “-illy” sound the dog probably wouldn’t even notice. [name]Tilly[/name], [name]Milly[/name], [name]Billie[/name], [name]Jilly[/name], I’m sure there are others I’m missing, that are all super-cute for a dog. And it’s kind of a funny story for the family once your [name]Lilly[/name] comes along. I know you said that might be presumptuous, but if I were in his position, I’d want to know (and would happily adjust my new dog’s name). If he says yes, you might even go have a cute collar made with the pup’s new name, and send her a care package. It would be a sweet gesture.

And, you’ve probably already considered this, but as an alternate to [name]Lillian[/name] there’s also [name]Lilah[/name] and [name]Lilac[/name] - which are a little more unusual but still close.

Good idea [name]Tempest[/name].

I agree with [name]Tempest[/name]. If I were your brother, I would be perfectly happy to change the dog’s name. He’s only had her for a week, after all! He’s a guy, I doubt he’s that attached to the name.

I have been thinking about this a lot the last few days. Today I remembered that for a while my family had THREE [name]Julie[/name]'s. My younger sister, my sister-in-law and a horse all named [name]Julie[/name]! It was amusing to everyone, we got by just fine, my sister got a nickname and the horse was “[name]Julie[/name] the horse” or sometimes called her more formal given horsey name, and [name]SIL[/name] was just usually “[name]Mike[/name] and [name]Julie[/name]”. Now it is a total non-issue because [name]SIL[/name] [name]Julie[/name] is gone by divorce and the horse died of old age. So now we just have my sister [name]Julie[/name].

I think I will keep [name]Lillian[/name] [name]Brooke[/name] near the top of my list of possible names. My family can just call her [name]Lillian[/name] or [name]Lily[/name]-[name]Brooke[/name] or maybe she or the dog will have some other nickname by then. Like I said before, this will not affect me on a daily basis so I think I will get over it. It is mostly the affect on my parents and the overall popularity of the name I am having a hard time with. I will just have to keep my ears out for other little [name]Lilly[/name]'s around and see if I hear it too much everywhere.

So here is my revised list after everyone’s great suggestions:
[name]Lydia[/name] [name]Brooke[/name] nn Liddy
[name]Lillian[/name] [name]Brooke[/name]
[name]Lillian[/name] [name]May[/name] nn [name]Lily[/name]-[name]May[/name]
[name]Brooke[/name] [name]Evelyn[/name]
[name]Brooke[/name] [name]Alexandra[/name]?
[name]Matilda[/name] [name]May[/name] nn [name]Mattie[/name]
[name]Matilda[/name] [name]Brooke[/name] or ???

Thanks everyone for their support and advice!
[name]Molly[/name]

I’m glad that you’re keeping [name]Lillian[/name] on your list!

[name]Lydia[/name] [name]Brooke[/name] nn Liddy-- This is my favorite by a mile, I adore the name [name]Lydia[/name], and it’s great with [name]Brooke[/name]!
[name]Lillian[/name] [name]Brooke[/name] – I personally prefer [name]Lydia[/name], but this is a lovely combo!
[name]Lillian[/name] [name]May[/name] nn [name]Lily[/name]-[name]May[/name] – [name]Lily[/name]-[name]May[/name] is adorable, but I have a little trouble saying it, that might just be me, though.
[name]Brooke[/name] [name]Evelyn[/name] – This sounds like Broo Kevelyn when I say it
[name]Brooke[/name] [name]Alexandra[/name] – ditto, Broo Kalexandra
[name]Matilda[/name] [name]May[/name] nn [name]Mattie[/name] – I love alliteration, so I think this is really cute… [name]Mattie[/name]/Madi/[name]Addy[/name] are very common nicknames, it may get confusing on the playground
[name]Matilda[/name] [name]Brooke[/name] – same issue as above, but I really like this combo.
