Hello berries! I’ve fallen for yet another name with a dilemma; Alicia, pronounced uh-lee-see-uh, but I live in the US where it’s commonly pronounced; uh-leash-uh (like Alicia Keys), which is fine, but I much prefer the former. Would changing the spelling from Alicia to Alisia (even though it doesn’t look as pleasing to me as the former) fix it, and I’m just over thinking this, or just keep it as is and just always correct people? TIA!
I think you’d be all right using [name_f]Alicia[/name_f] prn. the way you prefer! Yes, I do think you’d have to correct some people, but I also think that some people would prn. it the way you like instinctively! I also live in the US, and I instinctively prn. this name as ah-lee-see-uh. [name_f]Alicia[/name_f] Silverstone is a good celebrity reference for the ah-lee-see-uh way, too!! x
I feel like spelling it [name_f]Alisia[/name_f] could possibly help but you are gonna have people pronouncing it uh-liss-ee-uh
I think you would be better off using [name_f]Alicia[/name_f] and correcting people if they pronounce it incorrectly
Also, utterly off-topic, but I just clicked on your profile, and your name is so wonderful. [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] [name_u]March[/name_u] is the most glorious, Little-Women-y, joyous combination. I’m so taken with those names together!! The loveliest!!
Awe thank you! Tbh, I never seen or read the books I mean I knew about them, but idk, I have a lot important people who were born in [name_u]March[/name_u], so it’s a little nod to them.
I love that.
I’d say to keep the [name_f]Alicia[/name_f] spelling and just correct people (but I’m Canadian and agree, a-leash-a is the more prominent pronunciation). To me [name_f]Alisia[/name_f] doesn’t phonetically seem any closer to a-lee-see-a and does seem more likely to be mistaken for [name_f]Alyssa[/name_f].
Hmm… I do think you are likely to get the “a-lee-sha” pronunciation quite a bit.
Spelling it [name_f]Alisia[/name_f] would definitely help to avoid that (although you might then get “a-LISS-ee-a”, as someone else pointed out as well).
How about [name_f]Alycia[/name_f] or [name_f]Alysia[/name_f], perhaps? (I once knew a girl named [name_f]Elysia[/name_f], and I thought it was such a pretty name!)
I’d honestly just correct people as I think [name_f]Alisia[/name_f] comes with its own set of problems (a-liss-ia, a-lee-zee-uh,…).
I think you would have to correct people occasionally, no matter how you spell it. I don’t think [name_f]Alisia[/name_f] has any big advantages over [name_f]Alicia[/name_f] since a lot of people will pronounce them the same anyway.
I’ve met Alicias with both pronunciations so I think you could correct people
[name_m]Hi[/name_m],
I also much prefer the ‘European’ pronunciation to the ‘as in [name_f]Alicia[/name_f] Keys’ one. [name_f]My[/name_f] opinion about using it is: if you love it, go for it. I don’t think it’ll be that much of a burden to correct people a few times. I don’t think changing the spelling would help because if someone told me their name was [name_f]Alicia[/name_f] (pronounced how you intend to) I would spell it [name_f]Alicia[/name_f] and never even think it could be spelled [name_f]Alisia[/name_f]. Also I don’t really like [name_f]Alisia[/name_f].
That’s what I would do. And I know an Alicia with this pronunciation (which I also prefer), and she only has to introduce herself once and no one who has met her ever says it wrong. I don’t think it will be much of a problem. Especially since “uh-lee-sha” is so dated now.
I’d just spell it [name_f]Alicia[/name_f] and correct people. I did like the suggestion someone made of [name_f]Elysia[/name_f] - I think that definitely solves the pronunciation issue but maybe you don’t prefer that spelling. I grew up with a friend named [name_f]Alessa[/name_f] (pronounced uh-lee-sha) and she had to correct people constantly. But my name is [name_u]Morgan[/name_u] and I constantly have to correct people when they call me [name_f]Meghan[/name_f], so really I think that’s a potential issue with any name you choose, lol. [name_f]My[/name_f] daughter is [name_u]Blair[/name_u] and people always think I said [name_f]Claire[/name_f]. [name_u]Or[/name_u] [name_u]Briar[/name_u]. It is what it is!
Hmmmm, I would vote for a different spelling. I am in the US and I have a very close friend named [name_f]Alicia[/name_f] pronounced A-lee-sha and I know she had to clarify that it wasn’t A-liss-sha, but I had never heard of the pronounciation you want (which is a lovely sound!) until I came on nameberry. I like the idea of starting with E because [name_f]Elise[/name_f] is spelled and pronounced this way. [name_f]Elysia[/name_f] is beautiful. I do agree that you’ll have to clarify no matter what, but it might be easier if it is a new spelling people know they need to ask how to pronounce it rather than a spelling they are familiar with having a different pronounciation.
