Last night my husband and I were going through list on nameberry and he stops at [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] saying how cool it sounded. I havent given this name much thought it wasnt on my radar till last night. So i was wondering what spelling would be the best. i don’t like the vivian spelling to much however i do like [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] is that to hard to spell ? would vivien be easier to get right ?
I prefer the spelling [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f]! It is a beautiful names and feels more feminine than the other options. Definitely my favourite X
I say [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] differently to [name_u]Vivian[/name_u]/[name_u]Vivien[/name_u] so you may get some pronunciation issues, but then again it could just be me
I do like [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] best though, it’s much prettier and more feminine. My 2nd favourite spelling is [name_u]Vivien[/name_u]
Like pp said, I pronounce them both slightly differently: [name_u]Vivien[/name_u]/[name_u]Vivian[/name_u] = viv-e-un, [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] = viv-e-en. I prefer the [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] spelling and sound, it seems more modern and feminine.
I agree about the different pronunciations. I prefer [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] myself, but [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] is also very pretty. They just give me different feels, [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] has softer sound, imo.
[name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] is my favorite spelling. It might be slightly harder for the child to learn to spell her name, but it shouldn’t be hard for anyone else. Beautiful name!
I prefer [name_u]Vivian[/name_u]. I think my second pick would be [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f]. [name_u]Vivien[/name_u] feels least appealing to me.
I love [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] though. It’s sophisticated but spunky!
Vivina feels more streamlined to me. [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] I pronounce slightly differently (viv-ee-ENN to [name_u]Vivian[/name_u]'s [name_f]VIV[/name_f]-ee-uhn) and feels a bit cluttered, if that makes sense. But they are both fabulous.
I love [name_u]Vivian[/name_u]! My second choice would be [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f].
These are my feelings. Nothing wrong with [name_u]Vivian[/name_u], I just love [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f].
Some of our friends just named their baby [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f]. I pronounce them both the same, but I really don’t think the -un/-en difference is enough to be a problem.
Alternatively you could go with [name_f]Vienne[/name_f], which captures the best parts of the name without weighing it down with extra syllables.
[name_u]Vivien[/name_u] is my favorite spelling, but my husband prefers [name_u]Vivian[/name_u]. I think that traditionally, [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] was masculine and [name_u]Vivien[/name_u] was feminine, but don’t quote me on that. Currently, [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] is definitely the most common spelling at popularity #141. [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] ranks at #322 and [name_u]Vivien[/name_u] isn’t on the Top 1000. So if you’re looking for ease of spelling/least confusion, I’d recommend going with [name_u]Vivian[/name_u].
I would pronounce [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] vivi-ENN instead of [name_f]VIVI[/name_f]-en, but I wouldn’t freak out to meet a [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] pronounced [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] either.
Good luck, and congrats on finding a name your husband likes!
[name_u]Vivian[/name_u] seems to me to be the easiest spelling especially since it’s the most popular. [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] is also top 400, and a common enough spelling. [name_u]Vivien[/name_u] spelled like that is not top 1000 currently. I think that spelling is too rare and unique. Most people will assume she spells it either with a or when she says no with a e will go to [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] spelling. I would pick one of two more popular spellings, although I do like [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] and [name_f]Isobel[/name_f]. I think any form of this name is usable.
(Basing this for girls born in [name_u]America[/name_u], since I’m an American.)
Good [name_m]Luck[/name_m]!
My daughter’s name is [name_u]Vivien[/name_u]! I think it makes more sense with an E because I pronounce it [name_f]Viv[/name_f]-ee-en not [name_f]Viv[/name_f]-ee-ann! But [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] is definitely the most common and I like all variations of the name!
I’d go with [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] and pronounce it “En” at the end. [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] is sometimes a male name.
I agree with a previous poster… I say [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] with the accent on the first syllable, but [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] with the accent on the last. [name_m]Both[/name_m] names are beautiful, with [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] feeling a little more modern and feminine to me, and maybe having a touch of glamour. [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] has a bit more strength and less of a girly feel, but it still has sparkle… I picture someone with a vivid and alive personality. These are simply my impressions off the top of my head.
My apologies… by the time I got this far down in the thread I had forgotten that the question was ONLY for pronunciation and spelling issues, not for our impressions of the name! I guess you got an unasked-for opinion from me!
[name_f]Love[/name_f] [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] - very [name_m]French[/name_m] and glamorous. I’ve never heard of a male [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] so I second like that the most for a girl. Viven just looks like a kre8tif spelling of a name to me…not as bad but I think you know what I mean.
Well i told my hubby last night that i really like the [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] spelling of the name but he looked at it and said i cant remember how to spell that and it looks like vivi-eeeeeeeene …sigh haha so i think we have settled on the [name_u]Vivien[/name_u] spelling thank you everyone for your input i really appreciate knowing theres people out there who love the [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] spelling as much as i do
