We are TTC and my husband loves the name [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]. I love it too. I love how it is spunky yet refined. Problem is, I fear it’s too popular? Or will be in the future? What do you think?
Also, middle name suggestions would be appreciated.
I adore [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]! It’s lovely and simple and classic. As for popularity, that really depends on what is “too popular” for your tastes. It has swung up in popularity in the past 20 years or so, but in the last few years has been going up a little slower. If you’re worried about a top 100 name, [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] definitely has the potential to go into that range, but I wouldn’t necessarily see it going top 10.
I haven’t seen it as a first name. I don’t think it is too popular. It is absolutely gorgeous!!
I also like the suggestions of:
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] [name_f]Claire[/name_f]
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] [name_f]Corrine[/name_f]
Also, on tv I saw a character named [name_f]Hazelle[/name_f]. Thought it was a unique spelling of the Classic [name_f]Hazel[/name_f].
[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps!!
In my entire life, I’ve only met one girl named [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]. I think you’ll be fine, but it really depends on what you define as “too popular.” I think it’s a great name.
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] is spunky and lighthearted, established and mature but fresh and young-sounding. I’ve never met a [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] but would love to meet one! It seems to be getting a fair amount of attention on Nameberry so may be becoming more popular, but my real-life experience doesn’t reflect that.
I like the name [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]. I don’t know anybody with that name - human or pet.

I don’t think it’s too popular, though it might rise a tiny bit on the list in a few years, altthough right now it’s in the 150s-200s so you don’t currently have much to worry about. It’s a gorgeous name that’s spunky but kind of sweet, and has a light, airy feeling to it.

I have only meet one [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], and she was about four. [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] is currently ranked #175, and I could definitely see it raise more. However, I don’t imagine it becoming a top 10 name or even top 50. I believe it will stay within the 60s-160s range. I think [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] is a very pretty name.
If you both love it then use it! I think Hazel is gorgeous, and while that style of names is really popular in my area I’ve yet to met one.
My daughter (4) is named Violet. It seems very popular on here, yet while I live in an area full of Millys, Evies, Finns, and Henrys, between playgroups, toddler dance classes, pre-school and 2 schools I haven’t come across another Violet… but I have met an 18yr old one, and an 80yr old one!! To be honest I wouldn’t really mind too much if it was common anyway…we both love it, and it fits her perfectly and those are the important things
So I wouldn’t worry to much, unless you start hearing it alot while out and about in your own area.
I love [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]! I only know one [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] and she is about 45 years old so to me it doesn’t seem that popular although I do believe it will rise a bit.

I recently met my first [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] - an adorable 18 month year old. She was seriously so cute and the name really grew on me! While I think the name is getting trendy ([name_f]Emily[/name_f] Blunt and [name_m]John[/name_m] Krasinski recently had a [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] which will boost it further) it doesn’t seem at all over used and isn’t high enough on popularity lists to put me off. If you love it, I vote use it! It’s lovely! And how exciting to have found something you both love
It obviously depends on where you live and what you would consider to be too popular. [name_f]Remember[/name_f] that for girls even the top 20 are now appearing less often than they did a 100 years ago. In 2012 [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] was at #175 in the US. I’d expect it to keep rising in popularity for the next couple of years though… here is why… it was at it’s most popular around the turn of last century where it was as high as #18 (1897). It remained in the top 40 till 1923 and top 100 until 1936. We are already in the 100 cycle of the name - as it’s already proving to be making ginormous leaps up the popularity ladder I’d expect it to remain popular (though I’m not sure it will hit the top 30 again). Also since [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] remerged on the US chart at #942 in 1998 it has risen by 767 spots - an average of 59 spots a year, which is another good indicator of it’s popularity.
As said… it really depends on what popular means to you. (I get a little freaked when my favorites show up in the top 100 - well okay I’ll be honest 300… lol… but that doesn’t have to be the same for you.) You might be happy with something outside of the top 30. Figure out where your comfort level is, and where that your husbands is. Figure out what those statistics would mean for your 1st grader or Kindergardener - are they likely to have three other [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]’s in their class? Or just one in their grade? Where do you want to draw the line? (I think having a couple in your grade isn’t a big deal but having 3 others in your class can be annoying - speaking as an “[name_u]Alex[/name_u]” from the 80s). Seriously, figure out where your combined threshold is and then make decision on fn or mn or not at all from there.
I love this name! I do think it will keep climbing the charts, as it is sweet and vintage, and also has that edgy z. So it appeals to a broad spectrum. It is definitely not everyone’s cup of tea though, I could see it reaching the top 100 but not the top 50.
