We are expecting bub #1 in [name_f]May[/name_f] and we have narrowed our names to 1 boy and 1 girl- we are keeping the sex a surprise. My husband just wants a third party opinion on our girl pick.
He is worried that [name_f]Bree[/name_f] B*ck sounds odd with the alliteration. I am not bothered by is as [name_f]Bree[/name_f] is a long sound and the last name is a short sound, so I think it works, and I am a lot more fussy than him! [name_u]Hilary[/name_u] is my middle name.
We wanted a name that we both pronounced the same (he is American and I am Aussie), that went well with the boy’s name we have had picked for 5 years ([name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] [name_m]Webster[/name_m]) including being of a similar origin. I also wanted a name of Irish/Celtic origin, like myself and my siblings- his condition was that it was easy for his parents to pronounce in a southern drawl (they are from [name_f]Louisiana[/name_f]) and didn’t have spelling that was difficult. I think [name_f]Bree[/name_f] is the perfect fit for all those criteria, and I like that it isn’t long and flowery…but is short and spunky!
Please let me know your thoughts on whether it works…and offer suggestions if you have any!
Im not sure [name_f]Bree[/name_f] works with your last name, but your boy name is lovely! For a girl what about Finnola with the nickname [name_f]Nola[/name_f]? Seems like it might meet your criteria and sounds much better with your last name, IMHO。
I like the name, but it sounds VERY nicknamey, especially in light of the one syllable/alliteration thing. [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] is very long and complete in comparison. Those points might not bother you, and that’s ok. I’d go for something longer that has [name_f]Bree[/name_f] as an obvious nickname, but the only choices I like with the rest of this package are [name_f]Brielle[/name_f] or [name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f]. If that doesn’t float your boat, [name_f]Bree[/name_f] [name_u]Hilary[/name_u] really is cute.
I love [name_f]Bree[/name_f], my only concern is how different it is from [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u]. I assume if you have a daughter now and a son in the future you’ll use both names. I don’t find the length difference to be a turnoff but if you do you might want to change the name. By the sounds of it you both love [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] [name_m]Webster[/name_m] and if you have a daughter now named [name_f]Bree[/name_f] you may let her name talk you out of using [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] for a future son. You want to make sure you love both names equally.
I’m not so sure about [name_f]Bree[/name_f] but [name_u]Hilary[/name_u] is my name (and from personal experience, I can tell you that [name_u]Hilary[/name_u] is a great name to have)
With your surname it’ll have 2 separate alliterations, the B’s and the E’s on the ends of [name_f]Bree[/name_f] and [name_u]Hilary[/name_u], but they’re both lovely names
[name_f]Bree[/name_f] sounds like a nickname to me. I am not sure it is substanial enough to stand alone. Especially if she were to have a sibling named [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u].
Are there any other girls name you and your husband like so we can offer suggestions if you are up to hearing them?
If you want cute and spunky, then yes. It’s a little too short for me. [name_f]Bree[/name_f] is also a nickname for [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f]… which goes nicely with [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u]… so I would consider that.
I think with your explanation as to why you both came up with [name_f]Bree[/name_f] [name_u]Hilary[/name_u] for your little one, I think it’s perfect for you. I don’t mind the alliteration of first and surname at all (I quite like the ‘punchiness’ of it actually), though I’m not as keen on the repeated long E sound at the ends of first and middle. That said, it’s not really too big of a deal - just me being picky really - as [name_u]Hilary[/name_u] is both an important namesake as well as a (rarely used together with first) middle name.
[name_f]Bree[/name_f] Bck sounds like a super hero name in the same manner as [name_m]Peter[/name_m] [name_u]Parker[/name_u], [name_m]Clark[/name_m] [name_m]Kent[/name_m], [name_m]Bruce[/name_m] [name_m]Banner[/name_m] etc. It sounds peppy and punchy if that’s what you’re looking for.
Other names that I think would fulfill your criteria:
[name_f]Brigid[/name_f]
[name_f]Bridie[/name_f] (I happen to know a [name_f]Bridie[/name_f] who goes by [name_f]Bree[/name_f])
[name_f]Oona[/name_f]
[name_f]Alana[/name_f]
[name_f]Cara[/name_f]
[name_f]Erin[/name_f]
I am personally fond of [name_f]Brigid[/name_f] [name_u]Hilary[/name_u] Bck, nicknamed [name_f]Bree[/name_f].
[name_f]Hope[/name_f] you find the perfect name
[name_f]Bree[/name_f] Bck is very choppy so I think I would prefer a longer name as some pp’s have suggested and you could use [name_f]Bree[/name_f] just as a nick name. Another suggestion is to use [name_f]Bria[/name_f]/[name_f]Brea[/name_f] as the letter “a” on the end makes it sound longer and I think [name_f]Bria[/name_f] Bck is nice if you like it.e
Edit to add that Bree is one syllable whereas Bria or Brea has two, therefore flows better with your last name.
Thank you! We considered [name_f]Brianna[/name_f], but I know about 10 of them (I teach dance). I know 1 adult [name_f]Bree[/name_f], and the name is certainly complete for her, but she does have a longer last name. Food for thought, thank you!
Unfortunately there are NO other names we agree on. We both like [name_f]Thea[/name_f], but it isn’t of a similar origin to the rest of our names- all boy names!
Thanks for your thoughts everyone, we are still on the lookout for a name we love just as much as [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u]…[name_f]Bree[/name_f] is still the frontrunner though!
I would love to see [name_u]Hilary[/name_u] [name_f]Bree[/name_f]. It flows with last name very well. I’m neutral on [name_f]Bree[/name_f]. I don’t love or hate it.
