As crazy as it might sound for someone my age, I’ve never seen myself having a partner, even as child I didn’t, so I’m almost planning on going it solo via IVF
My middle name is Mcke.nzie, and my surname sounds like [name_m]Pruitt[/name_m]…I love my family and have nothing against my surname, aside from the fact I don’t like how it sounds with majority of the names that I love
So…as a possible solution for any future child(ren) I may have…what do you think of making Mcke.nzie their surname, or double barrel it as Mck.enzie [name_m]Pruitt[/name_m]?
That way I’d still be using and honouring my family’s name, just in a way I think works better with the first names I like
(this is at least for right now, who knows, by the time I actually have kids I might have different taste in names and this may well be a non-issue…and of course there is still the possibility of finding that special someone and use their surname instead, but I’m a planner
)
Any thoughts appreciated
It depends on if it’s that important to you to match the last name to your favorite given names rather than the other way around.
One thing I will say is that if you are going to be a single mother by choice, it’s probably easiest if you and your children share the exact same last name. So if you want to use [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u] as a last name instead of your middle, you might wind up changing it legally for you as well. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you mind going through the hassle of that process? That could help you with the overall decision.
Oddly enough this is something I’ve thought about a lot too. I feel there’s a good chance I’ll be a single mother and my surname really doesn’t fit with the firsts I like. But I think it’s better to compromise on that and share a surname. I actually don’t have the exact same surname as either of my parents, even though it’s super obvious I’m my dad’s daughter (his first/surname is my double barrelled surname), so there was a little confusion when I went off to uni and needed a bank card. I think it’s easier to share a surname with your kids, and for what it’s worth I think [name_m]Pruitt[/name_m] (or something similar) sounds fine with the names in your sig.
